This vehicle was rare to start with and now it's nearly 20 years old. If you're looking for a car with some style and power that's not expensive, this is a pretty good option. This car was made to cruise and it's a smooth ride going down the highway at a good clip.

Enough of the sales pitch though, this car is almost two decades old and it's German. I've had this car for about 9 months and it was a great interim car for commutes while I was trying to save some cash. Did I end up saving any cash? Not really.  I've spent a bunch of money repairing things on it that weren't right when I got it and things that broke along the way. Things will continue to break, that's just the way things go on a car this old. But right now, it's running well and nothing is outright broken on it. No accidents and clean title.

Let's start with physical condition. This is a fair example of a UrS6. The exterior paint condition is poor from neglect, heat and sun. The worst part of it is the hood which has oxidized and discolored from the heat of the engine bay. The rest of body paint is in okay shape. No major chips or peels, but plenty of dents, dings and scratches. The good news is it's a California car and there's no rust.

The interior is in similarly okay shape. The driver seat bolster leather has torn but layers of beige duct-tape serve a bandaid pretty well. Similarly with the rear seat on one side. The carpet is in good shape but has some stains. The dash and steering wheel are in good shape. The stereo works well. I added an auxiliary input directly into it by rigging up a switch for the CD audio so you can be modern and hook up your phone to it.

Mechanically, it runs pretty strong. Turbo still pulls well. Transmission is in good shape, no grinds or difficulty getting into gear. There is a very short rough idle (about 20-30 seconds) when it's been sitting for more than a few days. There's plenty of meat left on the brake pads. This car is a hoot to drive, which is what attracted me to it despite the high mileage. How high? Presently 276,5xx miles. That's a lot but if these cars are well cared for it's not uncommon to get these well into the 300s.

I have a spreadsheet with service history going back over 150,000 miles. The car was previously maintained by 2Bennett Audimotive in Davis, CA. There's tons of receipts from there to go along with the vehicle. I spent a while trying to figure out what was causing noise in the front passenger suspension. After replacing virtually everything, I found out it was 2Bennett's camber plates. So I removed them and put in regular strut tower mounts which stopped the noise.

The prior owner added HID headlights, put on 2Bennett lowering springs, the 18" A8 wheels, put on a bunch of 034 silicone hoses and replaced some of the mounts. The engine had a complete head rebuild by the owner before that at 2Bennett at 194k miles. A common part to fail on these are the camshaft position sensors, that was replaced at 235k miles. Timing belt was done at 224k miles. There is nothing that presently needs done to this car based on milage unless you wanted to prematurely replace the clutch which was done around 85k miles ago, but it doesn't slip at all and I've heard stories of these clutches going over 100k miles without incident.

Here's the list of work that has been done since I've owned it within the last 7k miles:
New Koni Sport adjustable front struts
New strut tower mounts
New starter
New ignition switch
New rear trailing arm bushings
New front passenger axle shaft
New front passenger control arm
New front wheel bearings
New front strut bump stops
New front strut bellows
New O2 sensor
New Bosch fuel injector (#4)
New fuel injector seals and filters
New battery
034 Motorsport short shifter
034 Motorsport High-Output coils, harness and wires
New spark plugs
New heater core
New climate control blower fan
New fuel pump
New trunk struts
New windshield washer pump
New HID ballasts
New valve cover gasket
New auxiliary (after-run) water pump
Transmission, differential and brake flush

All told, it's a couple thousand dollars just in parts. The car has run pretty reliably for the last few thousand miles with the exception of a plastic coolant hose coupler breaking. That was a simple fix but it's an example of how this old car might have its moments.

There's also some spare parts that go along with this vehicle. There's rear driver side tail-light that's in great shape to replace the one on it that has a small crack in it. There's a matching leather rear-seat back. The current one is in good shape but the prior owner got it with the thought it could be used to reupholster the torn leather. Anything I have, I'll throw in.

VW adding particulate filters to gas engines

Wed, Aug 3 2016

Volkswagen is working hard to overcome the PR disaster that is its diesel emissions scandal, and part of its efforts is focusing, weirdly, on petrol engines. Starting in June 2017, the embattled German automaker will add particulate filters to the gas-powered Volkswagen Tiguan and Audi A5. The change will eventually impact nearly every direct-injected gas engine the VW Group makes. Audi? Particulate filter. Seat? Particulate filter. Even Bentley is going to get the tech, all in a bid to reduce soot emissions by 90 percent. In fact, by 2022 VAG expects 7 million of its vehicles to boast the emissions-cleaning tech, which has long been a fixture on diesel engines. "Following increases in efficiency and lower CO2 output, we are now bringing about a sustained reduction in the emission levels of our modern petrol engines by fitting particulate filters as standard," Volkswagen Group research and design boss Dr. Ulrich Eichhorn said in a statement. "In the future, all models will be equipped with the latest and most efficient SCR catalytic converter technology." VW's initial rollout focuses on the 1.4-liter, turbocharged Tiguan and the 2.0-liter, turbocharged A5. Considering the popularity of the 2.0-liter across the VW range, we'd expect it's only a matter of time before VW expands its particulate filters tech to additional gas-powered vehicles. Recharge Wrap-up: Tesla seeks Gigafactory architect, Uber hails carpools

Thu, Aug 7 2014

Tesla is looking for an architect to help design its proposed Gigafactory battery manufacturing facility. According to the Palo Alto-based job listing, which is titled "Architect - Gigafactory," the applicant must have, among other qualifications, over five years of experience with "high-tech infrastructure and operational facilities (semiconductor, solar, battery, waste water treatment plants, etc.)." The job also includes being away from home quite a bit, as it the listing states, "This full time role requires the flexibility of traveling when needed (up to 70 percent) and doing whatever it takes to achieve project objectives." Think you've got what it takes? See the listing for yourself, here, or read more at Silicon Valley Business Journal. Tesla has appointed Robyn Denholm of Juniper Networks to its board of directors. Denholm is Executive Vice President, Chief Financial and Operations Officer at Juniper Networks. Denholm replaces Brad Buss as chair of Tesla's Audit Committee and a member of the company's Compensation and Nominating and Corporate Governance committees. Buss will remain a member of Tesla's board as he joins SolarCity as CFO. Denholm is Tesla's first female director. Read more at Bloomberg, or in the press release below. Uber, the company behind the now famous ride-hailing app, is introducing its carpooling service, UberPool. The service matches drivers with (hopefully multiple) passengers going to similar destinations, with users paying just a fraction of the cost of a normal taxi, or even an Uber ride. If a rider can't get matched with a driver, they can enjoy a discounted Uber ride. As the company points out in its blog, "At these price points, Uber really is cost-competitive with owning a car, which is a game-changer for consumers." UberPool is currently running a private beta program, which it plans to expand on August 15. Read more in-depth about the UberPool at Forbes, or learn more at Uber's blog. For a few reasons why this new expansion might run afoul of archaic laws (put there to keep entrenched interests in play), check out Engadget. Plug-in hybrids are encouraging an evolution of transmission technology. Companies like Schaeffler and ZF Friedrichshafen are adapting their transmissions to include electric motors within them for use in plug-in hybrids. For example, the electric motor in ZF's eight-speed powers the transmission when the internal combustion engine is shut off.
