Electric 1960 Auto Union 1000S has vintage looks, modern power

If you want to buy a classic car but somehow feel a twinge of guilt about the old engine polluting too much, then it's worth taking a look at this 1960 Auto Union 1000S on eBay Motors. The owner removed the original three-cylinder, two-stroke and installed a fully electric powertrain. In place of the internal combustion engine, there's an Azure Dynamics three-phase AC24 motor to spin the front wheels, and it even has regenerative braking. Lithium-ion batteries replace the rear seat and extend into the trunk to supply 21.5 kWh of energy storage. The seller claims the Auto Union weighs 2,400 pounds, so the powertrain might be rather lively in such a light car. From the outside, this Auto Union is immaculate. The owner's body-off restoration includes powder coating the chassis and suspension and repainting the exterior in Ascot Grey with the white roof. The color scheme looks perfect on cars of this era. The interior now has a digital instrument cluster in the center of the dash. We could see this change upsetting some purists because of the clash between original and modern. However, the reupholstered fabric seats look amazing. The owner has covered 15,000 miles since the restoration, so any powertrain bugs have been worked out in that time. As of this writing, the bidding is at $15,100 with 28 bids and the reserve is not yet met. The auction ends Sunday, April 10. Control your Audi with your Apple TV, if you want to

Not to dash your hopes right up top, but this isn't a way to remotely drive an R8 from the comfort of your living room, or even summon it from the garage. Also, you'll need the new fourth-generation Apple TV (and a real TV hooked up to it) as well as a 2017 A4 or Q7. What Audi is offering is basically a version of the Audi MMI connect app distilled for the streaming media box. Things you can do include locking and unlocking the car, setting it to heat up or cool down before you hop in, and viewing the status of the car. (No screenshot was available from Audi, so you're looking at the iPhone version of the app up top. Just imagine it larger and more horizontal.) Who's it for? People who have the latest Apple TV, a new Audi, and would rather control the latter with the former on a big screen than a smartphone. In other words, we're not sure. We do wager that there's a decent amount of overlap between Audi drivers and tech early adopters, so someone will get excited by this. And since the new Apple TV is based on iOS, it probably wasn't too tough to port the iPhone version of the app over. Like a lot of what we're seeing at CES this week, this is likely a small step in the direction of increasing connectivity between all of the digital stuff in our lives and our cars. We'll get more excited when the family flatscreen turns into a live window of what your car is looking at. But also terrified.

Audi builds 5-millionth vehicle with Quattro

Quattro, the trademark name Audi has put on its all-wheel-drive system engineered for passenger vehicles, recently celebrated its five-millionth installation. The driveline has been offered in more than 140 different vehicles since its introduction more than three decades ago.
The all-wheel-drive technology made its world debut at the 1980 International Geneva Motor Show, beneath the floorpan of the Quattro Coupé, a low-volume two-door. It didn't take consumers long to embrace Audi's innovative approach. While most four-wheel-drive systems at that time utilized heavy transfer cases or second cardan shafts, Quattro was virtually tension-free, light, compact and efficient. Most importantly, enthusiasts found it was especially suitable for sports cars.
Today, the automaker offers Quattro on its full line of passenger vehicles and it is unquestionably successful (the technology enjoyed a 43 percent take rate in 2012). On models with transverse-mounted engines (A3 and TT), Audi uses an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch with hydraulic actuator. Under normal conditions, the clutch sends power almost exclusively to the front wheels (if wheel slippage occurs, up to 100 percent of the torque may be sent to the rear). Vehicles with transverse-mounted engines (A4, A5, Q5, etc...) use a self-locking center differential sending 40 percent of the engine torque to the front axle and 60 percent to the rear under normal conditions (it is able to send the majority of the power to the axle with better traction when needed). The highest-performing Quattro systems use torque vectoring to further improve cornering grip and speeds.
