You will not find another Audi, even in the show circuit like the one you see here.  It has been thoroughly yet tastefully customized in Cali high end car tradition for show purposes.  Better yet, it is driveable on the streets. Almost NO part of this project left untouched. It turns heads wherever it goes, even here in SoCal where you need to put in work to get noticed.  It was built with the utmost attention to detail for car shows.  The craftsmanship in the bodywork and interior customization was unrivaled when it was built and even today; especially outside of Cali.  This project took home Best-In-Class Audi in its first show (represented by all the major car crews at the time) and was featured in Car Audio and Electronics when it was in circulation.  Most cars featured in Car Audio had the best audio system builds but minimal emphasis on non-audio modification aesthetics.  This one struck a balance of the 2 so even when you can't see it, you'll hear it.  Any mod-enthusiast knows that numerous trial and error goes into a build like this and painstaking attention to detail was exercised to get everything to fit together in form and function, resulting in this one of a kind project/customized car.  I was fortunate enough to have a friend who managed the customization work at DTM Autobody, which is a pioneer in showcar customization.  $47K was invested into the project (would have paid $70k if I didn't get hooked up) at one of if not THE premier shop for custom autobody work in SoCal.

This car would be perfect for someone who appreciates a refined customized car, not just a street dragster or something with basic aftermarket parts slapped on.  While cruising in this car, you will know that you are in a class of your own when other modified cars roll up.  I’ve had exotic car owners do a double take or roll along in the next lane to do a car-check.  And there are others with his/her car, but no others with this one.  And if you live in a smaller city, you will be known in your circles.  Since it was built mainly for show purposes and that the 2.8L 12V B5’s had few engine mod aftermarket parts, the engine/drivetrain has basic mods and is an open canvas for someone who wants to own this car and build the ultimate Audi showcar with show and go.  I was going to install a PES Supercharger, which is compatible with this engine but other priorities took over before I committed.  It is also fine the way it is for someone who wants to drive a show-ready car.  Due to family, work, and a pending move to Seattle, I can’t devote the time to continue showing/promoting it.  I know that making the money back NEVER happens, even if I part it out.  Because of that I chose not to tear it up even if I can get a little more for it, with the idea that someone will enjoy this labor of love or continue the project.  If you are more than half serious about this, don't hesitate contacting me with questions.

Engine/Performance Mods:

?             Custom 3" straight-through exhaust piping with Supersprint Exhaust for a deep strong pitch.  No chambers/baffles to obstruct exhaust and greatly improves velocity in the high-end.  The exhaust does not sound overpowering and yet loud enough for others to know that it was modified with high end parts.

                Custom Air-Intake

?             Windshield Fluid Reservoir removed

?             Optima Blue High Performance  Battery

?             Polished Engine Manifold

?             Custom Painted Engine Cover

?             B6 Power Steering Reservoir (less bulky than B5’s)

?             Battery Cutoff Switch for security and prevent battery drainage

?             Painted Sway Bar

Exterior Mods:

Obviously the most noticeable aspect of this car, it’s balanced between class and sporty-aggressive.  The candy paint pops and shimmers in different shades depending on the angle of the sun or streetlights around it.  The Midnight Sapphire color is aggressive yet fit for a high end car and not so wild and bright that it looks like you’re driving a drifter.  The Front and Rear Valances were MOLDED into the original front and rear bumpers and modified to unify the continuity of the modified bodylines.  They look like they were made for the car yet custom at the same time.  No one can buy these parts.  The Sideskirts were MOLDED into the quarter panels, thus making it a mild Widebody.  The Carbon Fiber Boser hood is no longer manufactured and sets the appearance apart from the rest.  Its aggressive angled edges above the headlights give an aggressive appearance, as seen in other’s rear-view mirrors and to those coming from the opposite direction.  The seamless body lines continue to the trunk spoiler which is also MOLDED to the trunk to give it an added customized elegant stance seen by those behind you.  The rims spins smoothly and was painted black in the wheel-well making it look as if it’s gliding on the road.  I had a friend drive it just so that I could see it while driven.

?             PPG Candy Paint - Midnight Sapphire (Completely repainted, was stock silver)

?             Custom Painted Black Roof

?             DTM Authentic Boser True Carbon Fiber Hood w/Hood Pins

?             HID One-Piece Headlight/Corner Lamp Converson

?             Added Clear Side-Markers

?             Facelift A4 Taillight Conversion

?             ABT Front Grille

?             ABT Custom Molded Front Kit with Carbon Fiber Splitter and shaved headlight washer

?             Rennen Custom Molded Side-Skirts for Mild Widebody Effect

?             Rieger Custom Molded Rear Valance

?             Custom Molded Trunk Spoiler

?             Rieger Rear Window Spoiler

?             BMW Style Side-Mirrors

?             Shaved Side Door Moldings

?             Shaved Door Keyholes (Door lock/unlock through trunk keyhole or keyless remote if installed)

?             Street Legal Window Tint

Interior Mods:

Half of the total amount put into this car went to the interior.  NOTHING was left untouched from the reupholstering to the custom fitted audi-visual equipment.  The highlights include the removal of the entire dashboard to CUSTOM-FIT 2 monitors at 30 degree inverted angles where the center air vents were located.  Performance gauges were fit into the passenger-side dash.  The Sparco Front and Passenger seats were even reupholstered to fit the blue-black color scheme.  Speakers abound in the cabin, to the extent of fitting 6” fiberglass enclosures into all 4 doors and re-covered with leather to give it a smooth stock-like finish.  Custom blue interior lights were installed in the front and rear seat carpet area, around the IPOD custom holder (located in the rear of the center console) and in the rear pillars by the rear dashboard.  A switch turns them on, putting the driver in their own custom environment inside the car.

?             Fully Customized Genuine Alcantara- Wrapped Dash with Two 5.5" Fahrenheit T7000 Monitors and Gauges

?             Custom Fitted Lit IPOD Holder and Wiring Harness at Front Armrest Base

?             Momo Sport Steering Wheel

?             Sparco Pedals

?             Sparco Custom Fitted Racing Seats (Front) with reupholstered double-stitched Blue Alcantara/Black Luxury Leather

?             Sparco Racing Harnesses

?             Blue Alcantara Interior Roof

?             Blue Alcantara/Black Luxury Leather Reupholstered Back Seats

?             Black Carpet Replacement

?             Candy Painted Interior Moldings

?             Custom Carbon Fiber Window/Door Switch Covers

?             Customized Fiberglass-Filled/Leather Covered Front/Back Doors for Audio Speakers

?             Custom Rear Dashboard for Audio Components

?             Custom Double-Stiched Audi Logo on Rear Dash Panel

?             Custom Blue Interior Lights under front/back seats and Back Dash for  glow-effect at night

?             Blue Alcantara Wrapped Interior Ceiling

Trunk:

The parts listed below come together in the picture above, in the magazine feature.  When the trunk is opened, you will see a very clean audio setup that is a treat for the eyes.  It was designed not only for the ‘wow’ effect but with acoustic functionality as well.  The bass bumps tightly even on high volume due to the dyna-matted interior.  It’s not overpowering for the size of the car but can definitely be heard by those around.  The center pedestal supporting the monitor was designed to be hidden from the viewer’s angle of sight and give the impression of a floating monitor.  Additional mid-range bass is provided by the speakers in the trunk lid as well, which also houses another monitor.

?             Custom Trunk (Interior and Lid) Alcantara Suede Wrapped-Panels for Audio/Visual Components

?             Fiberglass Painted Monitor Pedestal and Frames

Audio/Visual:

?             Pioneer DEH-P5700MP  CD/DVD/IPOD Receiver with 7"  Touchscreen Monitor

?             2 (Two) - 5.5" Fahrenheit T700    Monitors Molded and Fitted into Front  Dash

?             8 (Total in Cabin) Kicker Competition  VR 6" Midrange Speakers

?             4 (Four) Kicker Tweeters in doors

?             1 (One) Kicker Crossover (passive) on Custom Interior Rear Dash Panel

In-Trunk Audio/Visual:

?             3 (Three) Kicker 10" Subwoofers in custom enclosures

?             10" Monitor in Custom Trunk Lid Panel

?             10" Monitor in Trunk Fiberglassed Pedestal

?             Amplifiers:         (1) Kicker KX1000.1 Amp. and (1) Kicker KX350.2 Amp on MDF Fiberglass Racks

?             Dyna-Matted Trunk and Trunk Lid

Suspension:

The Brembo big brakes speak for itself and allows you to stop on a dime.  The clearance between the brakes calipers and AGIO rims is as minimal as one can get to provide for the deepest wheel dishes possible on this Audi.  AGIO is a brand that makes luxury wheels for high end European imports and this set (S9’s) was the first purchased here in the US thanks to my connect at DTM Autobody at the time.  They are silky smooth when spinning on the road and gives the car a floating appearance.  The KW Variant II coilovers are height-adjustable for your desired perfect drop and the adjustable dampening combined with variable height provides performance functionality based on your driving preferences.

?             Brembo Cross-Drilled Sport Kit Complete Front Brakes Replacement

?             AGIO S9 (Japanese Custom Wheels for Luxury Euros) 19" Polished Wheels with Black Painted Wheel Wells for Floating Spinning Effect

?             KW Variant II Coilovers with Adjustable Height and Dampening

Audi 4.2-liter V8 to live again in next-gen R8

Thu, 27 Feb 2014

Fellow auto enthusiasts, it looks like the car gods have smiled upon us. Word is that Audi's stupendous 4.2-liter V8 will once again be available in the next-generation R8. Rumors pegged the trusty 4.2 as a dead engine revving, thanks to Audi's newer 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 found in models like the S6 and S7.
We expected the 4.0-liter to be the go-to engine in the next R8, but according to Car and Driver, there have been some issues cooling the force-induced mill in the mid-engine R8. The issues are so severe, in fact, that the 4.2 is going to be retained in the car's second generation.
It's more than just practical matters like cooling that are keeping the R8 from going turbocharged. C/D reports that even with the current state of forced induction, a turbocharged R8's throttle response and its resultant exhaust note would suffer too much to be feasible.

First impressions of Audi's next TT interior and Virtual Cockpit [w/video]

Wed, 08 Jan 2014

Not content to pummel CES show goers with laser lights and self-piloting vehicles, Audi has also pulled the wraps (well, some of the wraps) off the interior of its upcoming next-gen TT. While the car itself wasn't on hand for us to check out, Audi did mock up the cockpit, complete with its all-new Virtual Cockpit central display and the latest iteration of the company's Multi Media Interface (MMI).
Virtual Display is Audi's new brand name for a completely digital reinterpretation of the instrument binnacle, by way of a 12.3-inch TFT screen. Audi tells us that there are two operable modes for Virtual Display: in the standard mode, an average-sized tachometer and speedometer flank a smaller infotainment portion in the center. Infotainment mode, meanwhile, shrinks the gauges to discreet circles and allows the navigation map, audio controls, or whichever system is being operated by the driver, to fill the remaining screen real estate.
This design, says Audi, allowed engineers to slim down the size of the center console as a whole, without reducing function for the driver. We can say that it looks very impressive as a demonstrator, but we will need some time with it in a moving vehicle before we're convinced it isn't slightly more distracting that a traditional setup.

Next Audi R8 to be up to 130 pounds lighter

Tue, 26 Nov 2013

"Simplify and add lightness," as Lotus founder Colin Chapman said. In a world where even supercars are subject to environmental, efficiency and emissions standards, lighter vehicles are being looked on as a sort of panacea - make it lighter, and it's automatically faster, more agile, easier to brake and better on gas.
Knowing this, it comes as no shock that Audi is looking at ways to lighten up its next-generation R8, with the brand's head of technical development Ulrich Hackenberg targeting a 110- to 130-pound diet for the mid-engine rocket. This supports previous reports regarding the focus for the next R8. Motor Trend reports that aluminum and carbon fiber feature heavily in plans for the next R8, which should go a long way toward slimming down even the lightest of R8s, the 3,678-pound V10 Plus model.
There's more over at Motor Trend, including the buff book's attempts to get Hackenberg to discuss powertrain options for the next R8.
