2009 Audi A4 Cabrio

For sale!  Quite possibly the most ill conceived car on the planet.  “Buy a German convertible!” they said.  “It’ll be fun!” they said.  Not so much… I bought the car in April 2011 with 32K on it.  I’ve put about 12K on it in two and a half years.

-         Power top currently NOT working.

-         Dual zone A/C

-         Power seats (passenger seat does NOT go back and forth, but all other functions work)

-         2.0L Turbo, CVT transmission (also shifts as a 7-speed manual in Sport mode)

-         6-disc changer with iPod dock

-         Power windows, cruise, tilt/tele, leather, etc.

-         Premium wheels

-         New(er) tires (less than 10K on them)

THE GOOD:  The car is an absolute joy to drive.  It’s quick, nimble, and feels planted to the road.  The 2.0 liter is not powerful (200 HP), but the turbo boost is a kick in the pants especially when the shifter is in sport mode.  Great sound system with factory subwoofer, 6-disc changer, and iPod dock.  Leather seats, snug interior.  The driver’s seat is a nice place to be as the seats are supportive, the driver’s position very good, instruments easy to read and very well lit.  The heating and air conditioning system are very, very good, which is important in a convertible as they are hard to cool with the top up.  Tires are very good and have less then 10K on them, Audi premium wheels.  Full size spare with matching premium wheel.

THE BAD: It’s an abysmal car in many ways.  Sure, it’s a convertible!  Isn’t that cool?  But currently, the power top doesn’t work.  AGAIN.  The first time, the brushes and commutator segments on the hydraulic pump were worn.  Had that fixed.  This time, the light blinks on the dashboard ten times, and nothing.  Sure, you can fold it down manually (if you can bench press 300 pounds and hold mechanical engineering and physics degrees).  You’ll even teach yourself some new curse words while you do it!  The power seat on the passenger side doesn’t go backwards and forwards (it hasn’t worked since I owned the car).  The wind noise is horrific with the top up.  Rear visibility is atrocious; I’ve almost run over several pedestrians trying to back the car out of parking places.  The stereo sounds great, but lacks Bluetooth streaming for audio and the iPod controls are from the 19th century.  The stereo has iPhone connectivity through Bluetooth, although your friends and family will constant scream “Pick up the phone, I can hear you in that stupid car!”  Back seats are useless.  Trunk is the size of a Tylenol.  The seatbelt and key-in-ignition chime is so loud and obnoxious you’ll want to go deaf so you never have to hear it again.

Carfax will show a recent front impact.  But trust me, it wasn’t an impact.  The damned car is juuuuust the right height to get stuck on concrete parking bumpers.  I hung it up on one last year, and when I backed the car from the space, it ripped the front bumper cap off of the car and broke the radiator supports and one headlight.  At about two miles an hour!!  So it wasn’t an impact, but an expensive brain fart on my part.  $2500 worth, to be exact.  Repairs were professionally done.

The opening bid is 8601.30, which is EXACTLY what I owe on it plus the expected eBay fees.  I really want it gone.  I just moved into a new house and am down to a two car garage.  I don’t drive it, it’s taking up space in the garage, and my daily driver is outside in the cold and rain.  If you want to make a serious offer for a buy it now price, email me when we are down to two days to go on the auction.

Don’t get me wrong.  I believe the car is good mechanically.  It gets okay gas mileage (about 25 combined) and is very dependable.  But I just don’t get German cars.  They are complicated, maintenance is expensive, and while I’ve never thought that the car would leave me stranded, I don’t trust it as far as I can throw it with things such as the power top and accessories.  If you’re willing to take a risk and are mechanically inclined, or want to fix and flip it to make a few bucks, this is your car.  If you want it for a daily driver and think having a convertible will be a “hoot,” do yourself a favor and hit the “back” button and go buy a Toyota.

Since I owe money on it: contact me if you are a serious bidder and we’ll work out how to pay it off and get your title to you.  I’ve never sold one this way, but it can’t be too hard.  It’s financed through Navy Federal; if you live near one you can pay them directly with my bill of sale and they’ll send the title to you.

eMail with any questions.   Sale is final.  If it falls apart as you pull out of my driveway, you own it.  However, you’ll see I’ve been on eBay for well over 10 years, have 500+ 100 percent positive feedback, and will be straight up honest with you.  Come look at it, drive it, whatever is fine.  I’m a 50-year old engineer, the only driver, and the car has been well maintained and not ragged on.  But I refuse to put another dime into it, so it’s a great opportunity to get it cheap if you’re willing to put a few bucks into it to get the top working.

Audi tests new kind of car sharing, lets you buy cars with buddies [w/video]

Thu, Dec 11 2014

Car sharing services like ZipCar, Car2Go and others offer people in cities the chance to have a vehicle without dealing with the hassles of parking or maintenance, while also eliminating traffic. However, many individuals are turned off by the idea of splitting a car with an entire metropolis or would prefer to have a specific model at their disposal. For these unsatisfied souls, Audi has a new arrangement in Stockholm, Sweden, called Audi Unite that might be just the ticket. The setup is basically a small-scale car sharing service. Up to five people agree to share any of Audi's models for a year or two – even an R8 if they are so inclined. Each user has a special Bluetooth key fob that identifies them to the vehicle, and a smartphone app allows operators to schedule time with the car. Each person is then billed monthly according to his or her use. Audi thinks it might work best with friends, colleagues or neighbors, but the company can also play matchmaker for clients, if necessary. "In the beginning, our biggest fear was what if two people want to go somewhere at the same time-what happens then?" said Clemens Weisshaar, one of the founders of design firm Kram/Weisshaar that helped develop the idea, to Fast Company. "Interestingly, it never happened." They chose Stockholm because the city was tech-savvy, and there is a tradition of sharing there. Prices for Audi Unite seem fairly reasonable for each user. According to the service's website, if four people use an A3 Sportback for two years with a 20,000-kilometer (12,247-mile) driving limit, they would pay an average of 2,091 Swedish krona ($277) each per month. For an extra 365 krona (about $50) per person each month, they can add a package that includes vehicle pickup and delivery for monthly interior and exterior cleaning, winter tire exchanges and necessary servicing. After Stockholm, Audi plans to try Unite in other Swedish cities before launching the program in additional countries, according to Fast Company. Scroll down to watch a video with more explanation about how the program works and read the automaker's press release about the initiative.

2014 Audi R8 V10 Plus

Mon, 22 Jul 2013

Ignore the naysayers who say the Audi R8 is too refined to be a proper supercar, or that it has begun to show its age - after a few tweaks for the 2014 model year, the automaker's flagship remains one of my favorite exotics.
Audi has treated all of its R8 models to a host of enhancements for the 2014 model year that include new LED headlights and tail lamps, larger steering wheel-mounted shift paddles, new exhaust finishes, updated alloy wheel designs and fresh exterior colors. However, the most significant news is the arrival of a proper seven-speed S-Tronic dual-clutch automatic transmission (it replaces the six-speed R-Tronic). The rapid-fire gearbox shaves a coupe tenths off the 0-60 sprint and improves fuel economy for both the eight- and ten-cylinder models (thankfully, a traditional six-speed manual is still on the order form).
I recently spent time with the new-for-2014 V10 Plus model, which is only available in a coupe body style. Compared to the standard V10 models, the Plus sheds upwards of 130 pounds thanks to lightweight manual seats (not fitted to my test car), carbon-ceramic brakes, reduced sound bay insulation, a smaller fuel tank and an assortment of carbon-fiber pieces (including side blades, front splitter, rear diffuser and spoiler). But that's not all, as the V10 Plus also receives a bump in output that pushes its ten-cylinder to an even 550 horsepower.

YouTube's Super Bowl commercial buzz list dominated by automakers [w/videos]

Thu, 31 Jan 2013

After Sunday's big game, YouTube will be the place to watch every commercial that you missed when you left your seat for an emergency guac refill or, as we say in Cleveland, took the Browns to the Super Bowl. That makes YouTube the nation's water cooler on Monday, and it's got some preliminary stats to share in the lead up to kickoff.
As you know, Super Bowl advertisers, particularly automakers, like to endlessly tease their big budget commercials in the weeks before the game, many times revealing them outright days in advance. Because of this, YouTube can tell us which commercials have been viewed the most so far, and their top five list is all automakers.
Kaley Cuoco appears to have been a good investment for Toyota, as her ad for the RAV4 has garnered the most YouTube views - six million and counting - among Super Bowl commercials so far. Second place goes to Mercedes-Benz, though not its actual Super Bowl commercial, but rather the teaser for it. You know, the one with Kate Upton and the car washing, which is up to 5.6 million views. Third place is Audi's Prom commercial (3.3M views), fourth goes to Volkswagen's slightly controversial Get In, Get Happy ad (3.3M views), and the fifth and final spot is bookended by the teaser video for Kaley Cuoco's commercial (3.2M views). You can watch all five in order below.
