Description:
The Audi A4 luxury car has been redesigned for the 2009 model year. Changes include sleeker styling, a more powerful V-4 engine and an all-new interior.
Exterior
The new A4's styling isn't a radical departure from the previous model, but it now bears a greater family resemblance to the larger A6. Like before, the A4 has a version of Audi's now-familiar grille, but the car's sides are smoother thanks to the elimination of door rub strips. The sedan has a small spoiler integrated into the trunklid, and two circular exhaust outlets poke out from below the rear bumper.
The A4's available LED running lights are now of Audi's signatures, highlight the road at night and are very good at grabbing the attention of oncoming motorists thanks to the bright, white light they emit.
Interior
Like many of Audi's other models, the A4 has adopted the German automaker's Multi Media Interface (MMI). MMI is a knob-based control system that shares similarities with BMW's iDrive and Mercedes-Benz's Command system. It can control things like the navigation system, audio system and vehicle settings. In the A4 and other Audi's, a knob and buttons on the center console are used to navigate menus and make selections that appear on a dashboard screen. MMI is quick & efficient to control everything you need in the car.
In addition, the A4 features a Bluetooth-based cell phone connectivity, a navigation system and a Bang & Olufsen high-end audio system.
Under the Hood
The A4's initial engine offering is a direct-injection 2.0-liter V-4 that makes 211 horsepower and 220 pounds-feet of torque.
Power is sent to all four wheels through Audi's Well Known Quattro all-wheel-drive system, which in this application has a torque split of 40/60, front to rear. This rear-biased design should give the A4 dynamics that are more similar to a rear-wheel-drive car's in addition to enhanced traction on dry and slippery surfaces.
Safety
The A4 has six standard airbags. Available features include Audi Side Assist, which informs the driver when another vehicle is next to the A4, and a backup camera.

The next-generation wearable will be your car
Fri, Jan 8 2016This year's CES has had a heavy emphasis on the class of device known as the "wearable" – think about the Apple Watch, or Fitbit, if that's helpful. These devices usually piggyback off of a smartphone's hardware or some other data connection and utilize various onboard sensors and feedback devices to interact with the wearer. In the case of the Fitbit, it's health tracking through sensors that monitor your pulse and movement; for the Apple Watch and similar devices, it's all that and some more. Manufacturers seem to be developing a consensus that vehicles should be taking on some of a wearable's functionality. As evidenced by Volvo's newly announced tie-up with the Microsoft Band 2 fitness tracking wearable, car manufacturers are starting to explore how wearable devices will help drivers. The On Call app brings voice commands, spoken into the Band 2, into the mix. It'll allow you to pass an address from your smartphone's agenda right to your Volvo's nav system, or to preheat your car. Eventually, Volvo would like your car to learn things about your routines, and communicate back to you – or even, improvise to help you wake up earlier to avoid that traffic that might make you late. Do you need to buy a device, like the $249 Band 2, and always wear it to have these sorts of interactions with your car? Despite the emphasis on wearables, CES 2016 has also given us a glimmer of a vehicle future that cuts out the wearable middleman entirely. Take Audi's new Fit Driver project. The goal is to reduce driver stress levels, prevent driver fatigue, and provide a relaxing interior environment by adjusting cabin elements like seat massage, climate control, and even the interior lighting. While it focuses on a wearable device to monitor heart rate and skin temperature, the Audi itself will use on-board sensors to examine driving style and breathing rate as well as external conditions – the weather, traffic, that sort of thing. Could the seats measure skin temperature? Could the seatbelt measure heart rate? Seems like Audi might not need the wearable at all – the car's already doing most of the work. Whether there's a device on a driver's wrist or not, manufacturers seem to be developing a consensus that vehicles should be taking on some of a wearable's functionality.
Overnight action from the 24 Hours of Le Mans
Sun, 23 Jun 2013We won't go into a recap here, but there are still leading positions being fought for in all classes - it's so close that leads are changing when a car goes into the pits. We'll let the recap wait until the end of the race, so for now enjoy some shots from last night's action at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
Autoblog Minute: Nokia to sell Here mapping for $3.1B
Wed, Aug 5 2015In a three company partnership the German automakers BMW, Audi and Daimler are set to take ownership of Nokia's Here mapping technology. Autoblog's Eddie Sabatini reports on this edition of Autoblog Minute. Show full video transcript text [00:00:00] In a battle for Nokia's highly coveted mapping technology the auto industry claims victory over Silicon Valley. I'm Eddie Sabatini and this is your Autoblog Minute. In a three company partnership the German automakers BMW, Audi and Daimler are set to take ownership of Nokia's Here mapping technology. The Wall Street Journal writes that the automakers had concerns that the technology might fall under the [00:00:30]control of companies like Google, Uber, or Apple. The purchase, worth a reported 3.1 billion dollars, is still subject to antitrust evaluation before it's finalized; but this early news is already a big win for the German three. Ownership of Nokia's Here tech means that automakers won't lose control of the information systems that go into their cars. The deal, if approved, is expected to close in first quarter of 2016. For Autoblog, I'm Eddie Sabatini. [00:01:00] Autoblog Minute Logo Autoblog Minute is a short-form video news series reporting on all things automotive.
