All Q5 models share a longitudinally mounted (front-to-back in the engine compartment) engine, unlike the transverse (side-to-side) powerplant in the new Tiguan. The powerplant is Audi's familiar 3.2-liter V-6 FSI with direct injection, rated at 270 hp and 243 lb.-ft. of torque. Connected to a standard 6-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission with DSP and sport shift programs, Audi says the Q5 sprints to 60 mph in an estimated 6.8 seconds. All Q5s will be equipped with quattro permanent AWD as standard equipment. To enhance driving feel, and offer more traditional rear-wheel-drive handling dynamics, the quattro splits torque 40:60 (front to rear) under normal driving conditions. In inclement weather, or under road conditions offering less-than-ideal traction, quattro will automatically transfer more engine power to the wheels that need it. According to 2009 EPA estimates, the Audi Q5 earns 18 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway for a combined rating of 20 mpg.

Audi's new Q5 SUV utilizes a 5-link front axle, and a trapezoidal-link rear axle. Both are manufactured primarily of aluminum in an effort to reduce weight and improve the ride, Audi says. Four-wheel disc brakes, with anti-lock control, are standard across all models. Standard Q5s feature 18-inch lightweight forged aluminum alloy wheels, with 19- or 20-inch aluminum wheels available as options.

Safety
Audi utilizes a modular unibody chassis with high-strength and ultra-high strength steel grades for a rigid occupant cell with optimized crash properties. In addition to the dual frontal-impact air bags, side air bags, and side curtain air bags, all models feature standard anti-lock brakes (ABS), electronic stability control with rollover mitigation (EPS), wet-weather brake disc wipe, and brake assist. A blind-spot warning system is optional.

The 2009 Audi Q5 had not been crash tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) when this profile review was originally published.

Technology
The 2009 Audi Q5 was the first model in the manufacturer's lineup to debut the next-generation Audi multi-media interface and communication center (MMI), with what Audi claims is simplified operation. The refined MMI features a new joystick with 8-way control for convenient input. The display is now a 7-inch TFT monitor with high-resolution images and LED backlighting able to project high contrast 3-dimensional maps (conventional two-dimensional views may also be selected) with real-time traffic reporting. A new telephone directory has the capability of storing up to 2,000 named entries with refined speech-to-text capabilities allowing the driver simplified hands-free operation without the need to spell out the individual letters.

Notes from day one of the Rolex 24 at Daytona

Sat, 26 Jan 2013

We came to Daytona Beach, Florida where you can drive on the beach, gun shops outnumber doughnut shops and you can putt-putt and fish for alligators at the same place. But we're not here for any of that - we've made the trip with Audi in order to experience the Rolex 24 at Daytona, the first race in the 2013 Grand-Am season and the only 24-hour race in America.
Three teams are racing four Audi R8 Grand-Am cars - WeatherTech Racing, Rum Bum Racing and APR, which is running two cars. Shown to the world two years ago, the R8 Grand-Am is part of Audi Sport's R8 LMS customer racing program that was commenced in 2008, and ever since 2009 has been nabbing success all over the world: In four years it has taken 154 victories and 17 series titles. That is with less than 100 cars sold to customers throughout the world, and the trophies - either class wins or overall victories - have been gathered from all of the major endurance races except one: Daytona.

Are future vehicular hacks inevitable?

Wed, Jul 29 2015

Before the hack of the Uconnect system in a Jeep Cherokee resulted in a 1.4-million vehicle recall, the potential software vulnerabilities in vehicles were already a hot topic with Congressional inquiries and even proposed legislation in the US. As cars' interconnected systems gain the ability to go online, they become open to a host of new threats. Automakers are trying to stop this, but it might be too late to put the genie back into the bottle. Throughout 2015, the issue of software security in vehicles has become increasingly vital. For example, the recent Jeep case wasn't even the biggest hack this year. In February, a major flaw was discovered in the BMW Connected Drive service that allowed researchers to remotely lock and unlock the doors and potentially affected 2.2 million cars. The fix was an over-the-air patch for the problem. Automakers are actively working to fix the issues. Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Audi reportedly are using encrypted connections and firewalls in their vehicles to prevent hacking. "Absolute, 100-percent safety isn't possible," Daimler spokesperson Benjamin Oberkersch said to Automotive News Europe. "But we develop our systems, tested by internal and external experts, so they're up to date." These vulnerabilities seem to be popping up more often. A successful hack took $14 in parts from Radio Shack in one case. There was also a 60 Minutes report earlier in the year about DARPA's ability to hack into OnStar to take control of a Chevrolet Impala. Experts aren't so sure companies can contend with hackers' advancement. "The difficulty for the carmakers at the moment is the question whether they can keep pace with advances in technology, and especially hacking technology," Rainer Scholz, executive director for telematics consultant EY, said to Automotive News Europe. "We seriously doubt they can." At this point, vehicle hacks are coming more from researchers looking for holes than from those with malicious intent. Still, the vulnerabilities are definitely there. It's up to automakers to keep patching the problems before they become dangerous to drivers.
