1989 Audi 200 Quattro Avant Base Wagon 4-door 2.2l - 10v Not/nicht 20v on 2040-cars

About five months ago, I was out cruising in this Audi wagon when a fellow in a Volkswagen Corrado ahead of me pulled off to the side of the road, motioned for me to roll down my window and then offered to trade right then and there for this car. A 10-valve Audi 200 Quattro had been his first car and it remained, for him, the love that dare not beep its name.
To be honest, it was pretty dark that night and I didn't catch what variant of Corrado he was busting around in, but I'd like to think he knew a reasonably good car when he saw one. And, alas, that is what my Audi wagon has been - a reasonably good car. It drives like it is on rails regardless of the weather. It feels like it could hold the entire IKEA as-is room. Or, alternately, five people with skis on the way to the local ski slope. Speaking of which, this car is steeped in history. After being born in what was then West Germany (despite its clearly East German sensibilities), it traveled the same roads as Hunter S. Thompson in Colorado before its first owner met with some legal difficulties and it was bought by a woman who drove it incredible distances between there and Pennsylvania with a seemingly large dog. If you're looking at this ad, you probably already know that a purchase like this is madness. But, wait. Take a sit in the incredibly comfortable drivers seat. Imagine your feet in taupe pumps, a pair of nude pantyhose on your legs and a taupe skirt suit to finish your ensemble. It's 1990, it's Vail and you're the trophy, second wife of the town's orthodontist and its your first summer selling ski resort real estate. "Would you like slopeside or base village?" Yeah, that's where this Audi takes you. Every time. Please buy my wagon and give it the glamorous life it deserves. (And now for the boring stuff. It's inspected through May 2015 for Pennsylvania buyers. It runs and drives. We've kept after the fluids and even replaced the radio with a stock Audi unit that doesn't change channels with every bump in the road, but sadly does not have the mysterious "ARIZ" button. However it has a QLCC chip so it doesn't chug along like an East Berlin streetcar and a stiffer wastegate spring. It has a replacement PCV hose from 034 Motorsports. It also comes with an insanely studded set of Nokian winter tires on lightweight sport rims and a stack of service records that are as compelling and entertaining of a read as most of the stuff your friends post on Facebook on any given day. 2015 Audi TT's digital gauge cluster to spread throughout lineup
Tue, 18 Mar 2014File this one under: "makes sense to us." According to Car and Driver, the slick new gauge cluster found in the 2015 Audi TT will expand to other models in the automaker's lineup. In the near term, expect the tech to make its way into the next R8 supercar (with a special performance display for that model), as well as the upcoming, all-new versions of the A4 sedan and Q7 crossover.
Audi's new customizable gauges first debuted at this year's CES - it uses a 12.3-inch TFT display, and, while similar to the systems found in the Cadillac CTS, XTS and Mercedes-Benz S-Class, this system has the ability to show full-screen, three-dimensional maps. We had a chance to check out the new display in-person at CES, and found it to be impressive, though we're curious to see how distracting it is while driving.
Car and Driver says the system is still undergoing small tweaks before Audi officially launches it in the TT later this year. From there, the display will be standard in the R8, but Audi is unsure about whether or not to offer it as a standalone option in the higher-volume A4 and Q7 models.
Audi changes the guard at Quattro GmbH
Fri, 24 Jan 2014Although it may not have the brand recognition that Mercedes-AMG does or BMW's M division, Audi's Quattro GmbH department is responsible for its most exciting products - including the RS line of performance models and the R8 supercar. For the past year and a half, Quattro GmbH has been led by Franciscus van Meel, but soon it will get a new leader.
According to reports, van Meel (46, pictured right) is being reassigned to head up the Audi R&D center in Beijing. In his place, Audi is promoting Heinz Peter Hollwerweger (60, pictured above) to the post. The move is expected to be confirmed in advance of the Geneva Motor Show, at which point we can expect Audi to claim that it was part of a planned rotation. However sources suggest that van Meel's departure came at the behest of R&D boss Ulrich Hackenberg, who was apparently unhappy with how van Meel has been handling development of the next R8 and of the R8 E-Tron project.
Why Hackenberg would have van Meel reassigned to run one of his own R&D centers is beyond us, but Hollerweger is apparently expected to be able to get the job done faster and better. Whether he'll have any major changes in store for the Quattro division and its products is another matter, but we're looking forward to finding out.
EVO takes flight in BMW's sultry i8
Mon, 15 Sep 2014Electric cars and hybrids are here to stay, much to the apparent dismay of some auto enthusiasts, but that doesn't mean they have to represent the death of enjoyable driving. Granted, the initial run of hybrids in the US like the Honda Insight and Toyota Prius weren't exactly tailor-made for aggressive folks behind the wheel, but things are clearly changing. In its latest video, Evo takes a look at three examples from Europe's new crop of electrified vehicles to show that the future of fun motoring is safe and sound.
Evo editor Henry Catchpole kicks things off with one of the most bizarre EVs of the bunch, the tiny Renault Twizy. Its low power and 50-mile-per-hour top speed might make it miles away from a hot hatch, but there's still fun to be had in extracting the most from this little city car. Next up is the Audi A3 E-Tron, which isn't technically available yet. It's a step in the right direction of eventually creating an affordable, fun-to-drive hybrid hot hatch.
However, the main event is Catchpole getting some seat time in the BMW i8. The Bimmer can really fly -literally in this case - and the butterfly-door coupe offers a clear look at the prospects for electrified sports cars. It might not have the power of hybrid supercar contemporaries like the LaFerrari or Porsche 918 Spyder, but the BMW doesn't cost nearly as much, either. See? Improved efficiency doesn't have to mean boring.
