Aston Martin brings ice driving program to America [w/video]

With between four and six hundred horsepower channeled to the rear wheels from a V8 or V12 engine mounted up front, an Aston Martin – any Aston Martin, really – might not seem like the smartest choice for driving on ice and snow. But that can also make it the most fun, and the most enlightening to experience. That's the point behind the Aston Martin On Ice program: allowing customers to drive the latest Gaydon has to offer on slippery, wintery surfaces. But whereas the On Ice program has been established for years in St. Moritz, Switzerland and in the Swedish Lapland, this year it arrived in America for the first time. A series of custom tracks – including a braking/cornering loop, slalom, skid pad and a full circuit – were carved into the snow in Crested Butte, CO, where expert driving instructors taught customers a thing or two about how to handle a powerful twelve-cylinder GT car like a DB9, Vanquish or V12 Vantage. The program has concluded for the season, returning next February, but in the meantime Aston will use the Colorado base camp as the center of its driving experience through the Rockies. Aston Martin DB11 stuns in leaked official images

The Geneva Motor Show officially kicks off when the world's press descends on the Palexpo this Tuesday and Wednesday, but we'd entertain an argument for a Monday kickoff. That's when Volkswagen will host its enormous Group Night event (so check back tomorrow afternoon for all the latest). But lazy Sunday evenings? No, that's for watching The Walking Dead. And, you know, looking at leaked images of cars meant to debut on Tuesday or Wednesday. So if, like us, you're taking a break from walkers, check out the new Aston Martin DB11. In news that isn't really news, it's gorgeous. The images, published by Carscoops, show a car heavily inspired by the DB10 concept car from the latest James Bond movie, Spectre, but it's designed for the real world. Things like crash zones, headlight regulations, cargo space, and even an opening hood all take their toll on the style of 007's latest ride, but the resulting coupe is still a beauty. We can see elements of the One-77 hypercar, especially in the rear window, quarter window, and haunches. But the roof and its silver arches, are all DBX Concept. Up front, there's much more in common with the DB10. The grille and headlights are unsurprisingly larger, with the former likely dictated by the need to cool the 5.2-liter, twin-turbocharged V12 and the later due to your basic headlight size requirements. Aston Martin values electric propulsion over downsizing

Not even small-volume manufacturers are being exempt from the automotive industry's pursuit of higher efficiency and lower emissions. At present, that means either electric propulsion (whether in part or in whole) or downsizing conventional engines, and for Aston Martin, the future apparently lines in the former. "I see in our future obviously V12s, V8s and probably battery-electric cars," Aston's CEO Palmer revealed to Autocar. "As time evolves, there's probably an inevitability to hybridisation, simply because, car by car, you can only downsize so much. I'd rather put a hybrid in there than an in-line four-cylinder." So just how does the company envision implementing electric or hybrid propulsion? "Imagine something like a 4x4, 1,000-bhp silent Rapide. I think 'Power, Beauty, Soul' doesn't say it has to be a gasoline engine. It just needs to be really powerful, really beautiful and set your heart on fire," Palmer explained. "I'd argue that 1,000 bhp on the ground would probably do that for you. So that's the route we could go." The British automaker demonstrated the DBX concept with an all-wheel-drive electric powertrain at the Geneva Motor Show a few months ago, and is currently in the process of revitalizing and expanding its current product range. Of course Aston isn't the only high-end niche automaker faced with the decision to either downsize or add hybrid propulsion. Ferrari is taking both approaches, using smaller turbocharged engines in its V8 models and moving towards hybrids with its V12s. Porsche offers an array of plug-in hybrids and is in the process of downsizing and turbocharging its naturally aspirated engines. Pagani switched from a big V12 in the Zonda to a smaller turbo V8 in the Huayra. Bugatti is expected to use electric turbochargers in its Veyron successor. And Lamborghini was recently reported to be considering a turbo five for the Huracan.
