There's an 820-hp Aston Martin Vulcan heading to auction

Aston Martin only made 24 examples of its track-only Vulcan, all of which sold out in the blink of an eye. Owners were personally invited by the automaker to purchase the supercar and had to shell out $2.3 million for the pleasure of owning one. Since the vehicle's debut last year, only one Vulcan has gone on sale in the US. And that one carried a hefty price tag of $3.4 million. But now, there's another Vulcan for sale and it's very, very purple. This gorgeous example is number 11 out of 24. There's no mention of how many miles it has covered or why the owner is selling it, but this is a rare opportunity to own one of the most visceral supercars ever. The supercar is heading to Mecum's Monterey auction in August and while it should go for more than its original price tag, there's no price estimate available. Potential buyers should know that the Vulcan is a track-only machine – a British motorsports engineering company can convert the car for road use – built in partnership with Aston Martin's racing team. If you watched Daniel Craig sliding around Rome in Spectre and wished you could drive the Aston Martin DB10 too, an upcoming Christie's auction will be your best chance to own one. The company will sell the first of these rare cars to the public on February 18 in London, but you'll probably need a martini – shaken, not stirred – after signing the check because the coupe will likely go for over 1 million pounds ($1.4 million at current rates). The proceeds will benefit Medecins Sans Frontieres. Aston Martin designed the DB10 specifically for Bond and built 10 of them for Spectre. Underneath the carbon-fiber body, the British automaker based them on the V8 Vantage, including its 4.7-liter V8 and six-speed manual gearbox. The movie's production modified most of the DB10s for filming, but it left two untouched, including this one. Daniel Craig also signed the car. The chance to share a vehicle with James Bond sounds incredibly tempting, but you might have a hard time taking the DB10 out for a drive because Aston Martin doesn't have homologation for the car or certification for it to be on public roads. What does Aston Martin have planned for the name Aeroblade?

Aston Martin is working on something called Aeroblade, and the company recently filed a trademark application for the name. According to AutoGuide, the paperwork suggests the name could be used for a component, not for a model designation. The word indicates some kind of aerodynamic element, potentially in the form of an adaptive wing like those seen on the McLaren 650S, Bugatti Veyron, and so many Porsches over the years. Deployable spoilers allow a sports car to keep the airflow clean and undisturbed in some conditions and generate extra downforce under others. The use of the Aeroblade name for a component makes more sense than an actual model name. Aston typically starts its nameplates either with the letter V (as in Vanquish or the Vulcan pictured above) or DB (as in the current DB9 or forthcoming DB11). It has been known to make exceptions – like in the case of the Rapide four-door coupe or Cygnet city car – so we could be in for a surprise. The British manufacturer of luxury vehicles is working on a new generation of models to replace its current lineup. That includes a new platform to replace the aging VH architecture and a new engine under development with Mercedes-AMG.
