I love the Disco Volante Spyder

For the past couple of years, Touring Superleggera has always given me reason to pause at the Geneva Motor Show. Casually sitting on the company's rotating stand is the Disco Volante, an absolutely exquisite version of the Alfa Romeo 8C with custom bodywork. I first saw it in red, then green, and now in a powder blue, as a Spyder. Only seven of these open-top Discos will be built, and I want one. Photos do not do this car justice – you really have to see it in person. For those of you who won't make it to Geneva this year, this video gives a better look at the curves and lines of Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera's creation. The tuning house is celebrating its 90th anniversary this year, and the new Disco Volante Spyder is (arguably) some of its finest work. Plus, bonus points for the name alone. Alfa Romeo 4C will be refreshed for the 2019 model year

Alfa Romeo Chief Technical Officer Roberto Fedeli said at a launch event for the Stelvio Quadrifoglio that an updated version of the 4C is coming next year as a 2019 model. "We are coming back to Formula 1," he said, "and we need the 4C to be our halo car," Fedeli told Autocar. But don't expect to see the refresh bring with it a manual transmission. No future high-performance models from Alfa, Maserati, or even Ferrari will be getting clutch pedals anytime soon, a decision reportedly made after Ferrari spent 10 million euros developing a manual gearbox for the California a few years back only to see exactly two customers choose the option over an automatic. We'd hazard a guess that Alfa will tone down its carbon-fiber 4C for the next generation. As fun as the little sportscar is on a race track, it's equally jarring to drive on regular roads. A revised suspension and perhaps power steering may be on the menu. Related Video:

We haven't watched a car ad with this much European panache in quite some time - and let us be clear, we're using the phrase "European panache" in its marketing sense, which is code for "women in lingerie." But it's Alfa Romeo and it's Italy and it's the 4C and what else would we ever have expected? Alfa Romeo USA has posted a two-minute spot talking up the technology and capabilities of the of 4C, with beauty shots of the car augmented by an amorous pantomime between two beautiful people wearing a whisper of clothing and some un-subtle editing; like when the phrase "pure seduction" is matched to the 4C's rear end and... some lovely lady lumps. It's totally safe for work, but that doesn't mean you want it rolling when the boss walks by. And speaking of the above phrase, we're wondering if the coupe's exterior designers signed off on "The inexplicable design of the 4C is pure seduction." Inexplicable? Check it out in the video above.
