The Giulietta, and later the Giulia are the cars that took Alfa Romeo from being a relatively small production company to being an economically viable and successful firm. Prior to that, they had produced large and expensive cars, and never in very large numbers. With the Giulietta/Giulia, however, Alfa Romeo produced significant numbers of these charming and capable cars. Its success was due in part to its unique placement in the market. It was neither a large hugely expensive car, nor was it very small utility car (such as the Fiat 500). Instead, they were affordable enough so that many could buy them, yet permitted a more glamorous and useful approach to motoring that really struck a chord with buyers on both sides of the Atlantic. The Giulietta Veloce enjoys the honor of being the highest performing and most developed open variant of the 1300cc line, thanks to its venerable twin cam engine, twin Weber carburetors, higher compression ratio, and hotter cam profiles. Performance was much improved over the standard cars.

This particular car has been beautifully restored by Tom Sahines a well-regarded Alfa Romeo specialist in the San Francisco Bay Area. He purchased the car locally in the Bay Area approximately thirty years ago and stored it in his warehouse before undertaking a comprehensive restoration that was completed in time for the car to be shown at Concorso Italiano in 2012, where the car won best Tipo 101 award. The car was extremely solid prior to the restoration and is reported to retain its original engine. Every system of the car was included in the restoration and the car has covered very few miles since being restored.

The car is in excellent, near show condition, reflecting the fact that every aspect of the car was restored. The body is straight with great gaps, and the paintwork was applied to high standards with a few minor surface imperfections but extremely strong presentation overall. The glass and lights are excellent, as is the chrome. A new top was fitted, which is in as new condition and the car has correct rubber gaskets around the chrome trim and bumper overriders. The wheels and hubcaps are also in excellent as new condition with Vredestein tires.

The interior is equally well-restored with fresh and correct upholstery and carpets. The dashboard is in beautiful condition with restored early type gauges and excellent switches and controls. The interior chrome trim is very nice with very minor surface scratches. New correct rubber Alfa Romeo floor mats were installed in the interior and trunk. The steering wheel is in great shape as well.

The engine compartment was beautifully restored and remains in near show condition, being extremely clean and correctly presented with correct Veloce equipment including airbox, intake trunking and cast Veloce airbox. The car has correct DCOE2 Weber carburetors. The valve cover has a black wrinkle finish and the variety of decals have been correctly reproduced. There is a spot where the finish is deteriorating on the paint on the underside of the front deck lid. The trunk was comprehensively restored and is also extremely clean.

The car runs and drives very well. It starts easily and the engine and carburetors are well tuned, pulling cleanly at all engine speeds. The gearbox is excellent, shifting easily into all gears, even second gear from cold. It is a 5-speed unit. The brakes work as they should, pulling the car up evenly, and the chassis and steering operate as they should, providing an entertaining and enjoyable experience that reminds why these cars are so highly regarded and enjoyable for events.

Giulietta Veloces are coming into their own as collector cars. Not only are the beautiful and technically interesting, but they are a pleasure to drive, which is one reason they are so popular on events. Indeed, these cars often share garage space with top tier classics like Ferrari 275’s or Mercedes Gullwings as a lower-stakes but still very enjoyable car to use and enjoy. They are eligible for the most prestigious events out there including the California Mille and the Colorado Grand. This particular car represents a superb opportunity to acquire an award-winning genuine Veloce Spider. Beautifully restored to high standards, this example runs and drives great in addition to being a cosmetically exceptional and correctly-presented example.

Alfa Romeo Giulia is going electric

Fri, Nov 5 2021

In an interview with Auto Express, Alfa Romeo's CEO Jean-Philippe Imparato revealed a bunch of details about the future of the company and electric vehicles. But the most interesting is that, despite the world's insatiable appetite for SUVs, the Giulia sport sedan will get another generation, and one that's entirely electric. Apparently, the car will be built on the STLA Large platform, one of several EV architectures Stellantis announced back July. Considering that there will be STLA Small and STLA Medium platforms, we're a little surprised that Alfa would go with the big option, since the current Giulia isn't particularly big. It could be that Alfa is aiming for particularly long range from the next Giulia, and maybe even more interior space. We bring up range because the Large platform is said to accept 101-kWh to 118-kWh of battery capacity and up to 500 miles of range. It may also be sharing the platform and development with the future Stelvio, like the current one does with the Giorgio platform. Imparato also talked a bit about the high-performance Quadrifoglio models. The company is definitely still open to them in the electric era, but only if they can make them perform the way they want. That seems unlikely to be an issue for a couple of reasons. One, Imparato told Auto Express that the man who helped develop the Giulia Quadrifoglio GTA is on the team developing STLA Large. The other is that Stellantis has a wild range of motors planned. At the low end will be 94-horsepower motors, but at the other will be 402-horsepower units. There should be a pairing in there that finds a good balance between raw power and finesse, especially when just one makes around 80% of the power of the current Quadrifoglio's twin-turbo V6. Stellantis aims to have its 500-mile STLA Large platform cars, among the others, ready for 2024. Odds seem good that the electric Alfas will start showing up at that time, since the brand is planning to be fully electric in 2027. That will make it the first Stellantis brand to be entirely electric. Related Video: 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid powertrain feature walkthrough | Autoblog

Next-gen Mazda MX-5 Miata mule spied 'Ring testing

Wed, 23 Oct 2013

Fans of simple, lightweight motoring, rejoice - we now have images of the next-generation Mazda MX-5 Miata undergoing testing at der Nürburgring Nordschleife. Now, to be fair, this isn't some lightly camouflaged example that will give us a great peak of what the next Miata, which will also become the next Alfa Romeo Spider, will look like. This is a mule, with the new bits hidden under a current Miata's body. That doesn't mean there aren't a few scraps of valuable information here, though.
According to our flock of camera-toting spies at the Nürburgring, the next Miata is likely to grow a bit, as new models are wont to do. In particular, it will be longer and wider, and the wheelbase is likely going to be stretched, based on the shape of the wheel wells and doors. Both of those factors will add more space in the cabin.
Those are the big indications provided by these photos, but while the MX-5 might be growing, it's a safe bet based on these images that it, and the (likely pricier) Alfa, will retain the classic, long-hood, short-deck styling that so typifies rear-drive roadsters.

Alfa Romeo pops the top on 4C Spider in Geneva [w/video]

Tue, Mar 4 2014

Alfa Romeo has made all manner of vehicles over the years: hatchbacks, sedans, wagons, coupes... there's even been talk of a crossover. But it could be argued that the quintessential Alfa Romeo is a roadster. While the future of the program with Mazda remains in doubt, Alfa has arrived in Geneva this year with a Spider version of the nimble little 4C. As anticipated, the 4C Spider chops the roof off the coupe and replaces it with rollover bars, spoilers and windshield frame all made of carbon-fiber and a lightweight canvas top. As a result, the 4C Spider is said to weight just 132 pounds more than the existing fixed-roof version. The low-density Sheet Moulding Compound bodywork has been rebuilt around the rear deck to replace the back, and carbon fiber is visible throughout the open cockpit. The 1.75-liter turbo 4-cylinder and 6-speed dual-clutch transmission carry over unchanged, as do the performance stats: 0-62 in 4.5 seconds and a top speed "in excess of 155 mph." The 40/60 front/rear weight distribution is also quoted as unchanged from the coupe, maintaining the 4C's handling balance. The 4C Spider also gets more conventional (read: attractive) headlights, and a central exhaust system made by Akrapovic (of motorbike fame) from aluminum and titanium. Though billed as a Design Preview, the 4C Spider is set to go into production early next year. All we're waiting for now is for Alfa Romeo to finally bring this – and the rest of its lineup – to North America.
