1960 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Veloce Spider
The Giulietta, and later the Giulia are the cars that took Alfa Romeo from being a relatively small production company to being an economically viable and successful firm. Prior to that, they had produced large and expensive cars, and never in very large numbers. With the Giulietta/Giulia, however, Alfa Romeo produced significant numbers of these charming and capable cars. Its success was due in part to its unique placement in the market. It was neither a large hugely expensive car, nor was it very small utility car (such as the Fiat 500). Instead, they were affordable enough so that many could buy them, yet permitted a more glamorous and useful approach to motoring that really struck a chord with buyers on both sides of the Atlantic. The Giulietta Veloce enjoys the honor of being the highest performing and most developed open variant of the 1300cc line, thanks to its venerable twin cam engine, twin Weber carburetors, higher compression ratio, and hotter cam profiles. Performance was much improved over the standard cars. This particular car has been beautifully restored by Tom Sahines a well-regarded Alfa Romeo specialist in the San Francisco Bay Area. He purchased the car locally in the Bay Area approximately thirty years ago and stored it in his warehouse before undertaking a comprehensive restoration that was completed in time for the car to be shown at Concorso Italiano in 2012, where the car won best Tipo 101 award. The car was extremely solid prior to the restoration and is reported to retain its original engine. Every system of the car was included in the restoration and the car has covered very few miles since being restored. The car is in excellent, near show condition, reflecting the fact that every aspect of the car was restored. The body is straight with great gaps, and the paintwork was applied to high standards with a few minor surface imperfections but extremely strong presentation overall. The glass and lights are excellent, as is the chrome. A new top was fitted, which is in as new condition and the car has correct rubber gaskets around the chrome trim and bumper overriders. The wheels and hubcaps are also in excellent as new condition with Vredestein tires. The interior is equally well-restored with fresh and correct upholstery and carpets. The dashboard is in beautiful condition with restored early type gauges and excellent switches and controls. The interior chrome trim is very nice with very minor surface scratches. New correct rubber Alfa Romeo floor mats were installed in the interior and trunk. The steering wheel is in great shape as well. The engine compartment was beautifully restored and remains in near show condition, being extremely clean and correctly presented with correct Veloce equipment including airbox, intake trunking and cast Veloce airbox. The car has correct DCOE2 Weber carburetors. The valve cover has a black wrinkle finish and the variety of decals have been correctly reproduced. There is a spot where the finish is deteriorating on the paint on the underside of the front deck lid. The trunk was comprehensively restored and is also extremely clean. The car runs and drives very well. It starts easily and the engine and carburetors are well tuned, pulling cleanly at all engine speeds. The gearbox is excellent, shifting easily into all gears, even second gear from cold. It is a 5-speed unit. The brakes work as they should, pulling the car up evenly, and the chassis and steering operate as they should, providing an entertaining and enjoyable experience that reminds why these cars are so highly regarded and enjoyable for events. Giulietta Veloces are coming into their own as collector cars. Not only are the beautiful and technically interesting, but they are a pleasure to drive, which is one reason they are so popular on events. Indeed, these cars often share garage space with top tier classics like Ferrari 275’s or Mercedes Gullwings as a lower-stakes but still very enjoyable car to use and enjoy. They are eligible for the most prestigious events out there including the California Mille and the Colorado Grand. This particular car represents a superb opportunity to acquire an award-winning genuine Veloce Spider. Beautifully restored to high standards, this example runs and drives great in addition to being a cosmetically exceptional and correctly-presented example. Alfa Romeo unveils more details about US-spec Giulia
Fri, Mar 18 2016Last November, Alfa Romeo unveiled some of the tech specs about the 2017 Giulia in the US, but now the company has released even more details about the lower trims ahead of their upcoming appearance at the New York Auto Show. We still don't officially know their prices, but the Giulia arrives here in three trims: a standard model, the mid-range Giulia Ti, and the high-performance Giulia Quadrifoglio. The Giulia and Giulia Ti use a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with 276 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. Power routes through an eight-speed automatic to the rear wheels, and the sedans can reach 60 miles per hour in 5.5 seconds. The optional Q4 all-wheel drive system can send up to 60 percent of the torque to the front axle when necessary. However, there's no word yet how this layout affects performance. Even the lower rungs of the Giulia range have a sporty demeanor. Standard features include a seven-inch driver info display between the analog gauges, a flat-bottom steering wheel, and keyless start. Depending on model, they come with either a 6.5-inch or 8.8-inch widescreen infotainment system, which uses a rotary dial in the center console for the controls. There's also a huge range of customization, including optional Sport, Luxury, and Performance packages and 13 available exterior colors. The Quadrifoglio ups the performance ante with a 2.9-liter twin-turbo V6 boasting 505 hp and 443 lb-ft of torque, which rockets the sedan to 60 mph in 3.8 seconds. To maximize efficiency, the engine has stop-start and cylinder deactivation. Customers who want a little more can order optional carbon fiber shell Sparco seats, which Alfa claims are the lightest in the segment, and carbon-ceramic Brembo brakes.
Mopar updates owner apps to make car ownership easier
Wed, Jun 3 2015Owners of any Fiat Chrysler vehicle will want to head to the Apple App or Google Play store to download the latest version of their brand-specific smartphone app. Developed by Mopar, the new suite of FCA Owner apps specific to each brand pack a number of valuable features. For starters, the apps let owners access information like maintenance schedules, service history and recall notices. The apps also include an array of how-to information and instructional videos, offer push notification for important updates like maintenance offers and recall alerts, and allow customers to schedule test drives and receive quotes from their local dealers for new vehicles. But that's just the tip of the proverbial iceberg. The FCA Owner apps also feature an augmented reality function that helps drivers identify instrument-panel icons. There's a Parking Reminder feature that helps drivers remember where they parked their car, guides them back to their parking spot and tracks the time left on the meter. Finally, there's an Accident Assistant feature that helps drivers record the specifics of an accident, upload insurance information and take photos of the scene. It'll even help find the closest certified collision repair facility, schedule an appointment and access roadside assistance. The apps are available for any Chrysler, Dodge, Ram, Jeep, Fiat or Alfa Romeo built from 2011 till today, and are available for either iOS or Android. If you've got more than one FCA vehicle in your garage, you needn't download multiple versions of the app as they'll work on any model the Italian-American automaker offers. Mopar Enhances FCA Owner Apps - Redesigned FCA Owner apps offer a wide range of VIN-specific information - Owners can access maintenance schedules, service history, recall notices and more - "Augmented reality" function, beginning with 2015 models, allows owners to use camera feature on mobile devices to scan and identify instrument panel icons - Industry-first Accident Assistant feature helps owners easily document important accident information and quickly locate a certified repair facility - Individual brand versions of the app support all FCA brand vehicles - FCA Owner apps are free to download for both iOS and Android mobile devices May 29, 2015 , Auburn Hills, Mich. - The Mopar brand has redesigned and enhanced its suite of FCA Owner apps, putting more resources than ever at owners' fingertips with easier access to vehicle and lifestyle information.
Fiat Chrysler trademarks Kamal, likely for small Alfa CUV
Tue, May 10 2016We have Alfa Romeo news to share, and for once it's not about a product delay. Fiat Chrysler has trademarked the name Kamal and we think it will be used on one of two crossovers planned to follow the (delayed) Stelvio. Fiat Chrysler trademarked the name Kamal last month. Because trademark filings are intentionally vague, there is no specific brand attached to the application, only parent company FCA. The link to Alfa comes from a small CUV concept that used the name way back in 2003. If we had to wager, we'd say this one will be smaller than the midsize, Giulia-based Stelvio and could use a version of the same platform or whatever will underpin the brand's (eventual) small hatchback. It probably won't come in gold like the concept. We hope not, at least. Interestingly, there's no trademark for Stelvio in the US Patent and Trademark Office's database. That name was confirmed by Sergio Marchionne in February, but anyone familiar with recent Alfa news knows things change. And then they get pushed back and change again. About that waiting, though. Alfa's product plans have been made and amended, the gorgeous Giulia has been delayed, and now things seem to be on track. Maybe. If the latest trademark filing is any indication, the brand is at least thinking about what's supposed to come next. Related Video:
