Fiat set to invest $12B on new models, stop Euro losses in 3 years

Naturally, you'd expect a massive automaker like Fiat to have an in-depth plan to exit the current European-market doldrums, and you'd expect that plan to include plenty of new vehicles to attract those precious buyers that still remain despite the financial downturn. And you'd be right, though Fiat does seem to have a few unexpected twists up its corporate sleeve.
Perhaps the biggest shocker is a report that Fiat will completely drop the Punto, a car with mass-market appeal aimed at small-car buyers cross-shopping the popular Volkswagen Polo. Its replacement will be a five-door Fiat 500 aimed at upmarket buyers (sounds awfully similar to the 500L) that will be built in Poland. Lower-end customers will reportedly be served by variants of the Fiat Panda.
Borrowing a page from the BMW, Daimler and Volkswagen playbook, reports Automotive News, Fiat is said to have plans to reignite production at its Italian factories by retooling them to build high-end vehicles from Maserati and Alfa Romeo. These will be marketed as premium products, built by skilled Italian workers (who are paid wages that are 75-percent higher than those building Fiats in Poland), and will be sold around the world.

Alfa Romeos, especially the fast ones, are car enthusiast darlings. As such, you likely already know that the 2020 Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio has a Ferrari-derived twin-turbo V6 making 505 horsepower and 443 pound-feet of torque. What you may not know for sure is how it sounds. And if you watch the video above, you'll know positively that it sounds excellent. Most of the video features the Alfa in Dynamic or Race modes, which open up the exhaust and make the shifts faster and aggressive, among other things such as stiffening the suspension. In these modes, the Alfa growls, howls and everything in-between. It's not a flawless performance, as there are times you get a bit of V6 drone, but when its right, its pipes sound amazing Fortunately for anyone with easily agitated neighbors, or buyers who want to take the Alfa on long drives, it quiets right down in its normal and eco modes. It also starts in the normal mode by default, so you won't wake anyone up if you have to drive off late at night or early in the morning. 2018 Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio is the priciest Alfa you can buy

Alfa Romeo has finally announced pricing for its Stelvio Quadrifoglio high-performance crossover, and it's not cheap. The base price is $81,590, which makes it the most expensive car in the Alfa lineup. The next most expensive is the Giulia Quadrifoglio at $75,295. That's a difference of roughly $6,000. And you can make the Stelvio even more expensive by optioning in Sparco carbon fiber shell racing seats or carbon ceramic brakes. Alfa hasn't revealed pricing for those, but expect the brakes to cost the same $8,000 that they do on the Giulia Quadrifoglio. You do get a lot of car for the money, though. The Stelvio Quadrifoglio gets the same twin-turbocharged, Ferrari-built V6 as its Giulia counterpart, still making 505 horsepower and 443 pound-feet of torque. That will take the car to 60 mph from a standstill in 3.9 seconds and on to a top speed of 177 mph. The Stelvio Quadrifoglio is also the current SUV lap time record holder at the Nurburgring. If the price seems acceptable to you, you'll be able to pick one up early this year.
