This 1978 Spider convertible is as close to a barn find as you can get. It has been in storage for the past fifteen years or so, freshly removed. 39K original, documented miles. It was purchased from its original owner just two months ago. Probably all receipts since new. Sold new in Phoenix, AZ and has never left. This is a running and driving car, but needs some TLC and could be considered a 'project' car.
I bought the car recently because I can rarely pass on a good deal, and to have as a summer time convertible for fun. But I have not done the minor repairs needed to make it a reliable daily driver so I am just putting it up for sale instead.
Since it was brought out of storage recently, both fuel pumps have been replaced (the in-tank and along the frame) and it has a brand new battery. The car does need some work though before it can be driven regularly due to the long time storage. The person who did the fuel pumps also cleaned the fuel tank but said that the fuel sending unit was no good, and that fuel would leak if the tank was filled up too much. The engine sounds good but runs rich and idles low. It seems similar to a vacuum leak, but I have not investigated the cause. It should probably get a fresh tune up. The transmission feels just fine, as does the clutch. The clutch master cylinder leaks a little under the hood when depressed. I have already purchased a new one in the box. It is included but not installed yet. The tires are very dry from the Arizona heat. They should be replaced before driving any distance. I have never tested the AC, but it is still intact. You can get in this car and drive it, but I don't think it is ready for more than just short drives as it is.
The body and paint are in okay, driver condition. No rust ever, anywhere. Most of the paint is original, but it has had some repaint work done. The panel in front of the hood, and the passenger fender and door look like they were repainted a long time ago. In the large stack of receipts there is one for $800 in touch up paint from when the car was almost new (1980). The plastic chrome 'V' that mounts under the front bumper is loose and not in very good conditon. There are some dings, scratches, and chips, but not more than you would expect for a car that is 35 years old. All the glass is good. Overall, you can drive this car as it is without having to do anything to the exterior.
The interior is all original and somewhat dry. The seats have dried and split in the cushions, the drivers side especially. The carpet is in good condition, but very sun faded. There are two cracks in the dash. The steering wheel is very nice. The door panels are good. The convertible top is completely dried out and needs to be replaced. The original convertible top boot is decent. I had new clips installed on it. The radio works. All the gauges except the fuel and speedo work.
It is still nice and clean under the hood. Never messed with and all original. The trunk is decent and has the matching aluminum spare tire and original tools.
Overall this Alfa is unique in the fact that it is a desirable older Spider, but is a one owner, 39k original mile car. It does need some work, but it won't take much to make it a good, 'get-in-and-go' weekend convertible.
The car comes with a clean and clear Arizona title with a little over 39k box 'A' (actual and correct) miles. The car is sold 'as is'. I will help with transportation as I can. The car can be stored for a time if needed. The car is located in Phoenix, Arizona.

Chrysler appoints new heads of Alfa Romeo and Ram
Mon, 18 Aug 2014Chrysler has announced to two key appointments to its senior leadership, both of them taking immediate effect. First up is Reid Bigland, who has been named head of the Alfa Romeo brand for North America. Bigland has served until now as head of the Ram Truck brand, a portfolio he now hands over to Robert Hegbloom, who had served until now as its director.
As a result of the appointments, both Bigland and Hegbloom will take up seats on Chrysler's NAFTA Leadership Team, and Bigland will also join the Fiat Chrysler Group Executive Council - the highest decision-making body in the Fiat Chrysler Automobiles empire.
As per Sergio Marchionne's leadership style, Bigland will continue to serve in two major capacities, maintaining his role as president and CEO of Chrysler Canada. Other senior executives who hold multiple key portfolios include Harald Wester (who serves as the group's Chief Technology Officer and also overseas Alfa Romeo, Maserati and Abarth), Olivier Francois (group Chief Marketing Officer and head of the Fiat brand) and Michael Manley (head of the Asia-Pacific region and the Jeep brand).
Marchionne threatens to move Alfa production out of Italy
Fri, 12 Jul 2013Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne was unsurprisingly frank when asked by reporters about potential investments in Italian manufacturing for Alfa Romeo and Maserati, giving the Italian government the ultimatum, "Italy should decide if they want [Alfa Romeo's relaunch] to happen here or not as Fiat and Chrysler have several alternatives." Them's fightin' words.
Fiat's issue with the government stems directly from its courtroom clashes with the Fiom labor union. The two are currently embroiled in proceedings over longer shifts and shorter breaks, as Fiom has so far refused to sign a new contract citing revised labor laws that it says are anti-union.
According to Bloomberg, Fiat will be spending over $2.5 billion on development of eight new Alfas and six new Maseratis, in a bid to wrest some of the luxury pie away from BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi. But that's only going to happen if the government is willing to play ball and make life easier on Fiat.
Fiat reconsidering Mazda-based Alfa Romeo roadster? [w/poll]
Mon, 03 Mar 2014Alfa giveth and Alfa taketh away. With apologies to Job (he has gone through a lot, after all), that's how things are looking at the Italian automaker - whether it's the promise of new products or its impending return to the North American market. But it's especially true when it comes to new roadsters.
While Alfa Romeo is expected to unveil the 4C Spider at the Geneva Motor Show this week, reports are now suggesting that its other roadster project is being called into question. That project is a joint venture between Fiat and Mazda, which was set to produce a version of its next MX-5 Miata as an Alfa Romeo, and was even changing the design to accommodate Alfa's requirements.
Now it appears, however, that the whole project in doubt. The problem seems to stem from Sergio Marchionne's pronouncements that, as long as he's in charge, there won't be an Alfa Romeo built outside of Italy.
