               Sharp, all-original Alfa Romeo 164S, the one to own. This is a fairly rare first-year model of the Sport in the US. It has always been a California-car since sold new in Southern California, until relocated to Northern California last year. I had no intention of selling my Alfa, but a sudden job-relocation makes this improbable. Reluctantly, I am posting it for sale here to find it a good Alfisti home.

 

              This S comes fully-equipped  with the Sport package, with the revised 3.0L V6 engine, updated suspension, Aerodynamics body trim package, S wheels and sport seats. It has 152K original miles, and it runs super, in both around town and on the freeway. That having been said, I do not fancy myself to be a race-car driver, and DO NOT abuse my cars, and have never done so. I have been very careful driver, and drive my 164 normally.

The 5-spd manual transmission shifts well and precisely into all forward and reverse gears. There is NO slippage, grinding of gears or odd noises. The clutch grabs quickly and does not slip. It has had a new clutch master cylinder replaced recently, so no risk of losing clutch pressure unexpectedly.

The 3.0L engine received a top-end overhaul at around 125K miles. It is tight and not a leaky mess like most. It is completely stock original, without any modifications from stock, besides an updated ANSA exhaust system. The car has also has front brakes just serviced ( the rotors are mirror mint). Rear brakes are about 80%. The 164 has stock-size radials with excellent tread ( at least 85% left), mounted on the factory alloy wheels. NO front-end vibrations, wobbling or pulling. Revised water pump and pulley update, of course.

 

               The body is in EXCELLENT condition, with absolutely NO rust whatsoever, anywhere in, under or around the car. The body is completely 100% RUST-FREE, as any clean, California car should always be. The original factory finish has held up remarkably well, with no flaking of the clearcoat anywhere, or fading to the roofline, trunk, hood or rear spoiler. The original glossy black still retains a beautiful shine despite the passing of years, evident that it has been regularly garaged.

 

The interior upholstery is in better than average condition. Both front seats are sound, with NO cracks, splits, tears or separation of the seams. The outer bolster on the driver's seat bottom shows some dye loss on the leather, common for any real leather seat. It could be easily re-dyed or gently touched up to make it look 100%. The rest of the upholstery, including the other seats and all door panels are in very good shape, clean and with no damage. The factory carpeting is very clean, and I had it recently professionally shampooed, along with the trunk carpeting, which is also very clean.

 

                    Overall, it is a very solid, good-running Alfa 164S, hard to find in its original configuration. It has NEVER been in an accident, wrecked, modified or fiddled with. I have listed the car to sell, with a ridiculous $1 opening bid. That being said, I have advertised the 164S in various other venues, and am open to a reasonable, FAIR offer.

Upon receipt of payment, I shall immediately mail you the CA title and bill of sale to the Alfa, via USPS priority mail with delivery confirmation, unless otherwise noted. Method of payment can be a cashier's check, or money order(s). Personal, business, C.C advance or annuity account checks may be utilized, but must clear funding before the car is released. Additionally, a bank wire transfer may be sent to my local CHASE bank branch here in town; it allows for faster shipping arrangements and a timely closing of the transaction. The new Alfa Romeo Giulia needs to be a BMW beater

The introduction of the Alfa Romeo Giulia as a BMW challenger is a claim that historically has meant that it will not be as good as a BMW. Mercedes, Audi, Lexus, Infiniti, Cadillac, and a few others have tried to loosen BMW's grip on the sports sedan market with little success. It was BMW that was doing the copying when in the early sixties they looked to Alfa Romeo's sport sedans for inspiration. Alfa Romeo's pre-war racing pedigree was second to none, and series production Alfas were sporting twin cam engines, and fuel injection years before BMW. What the post-war Alfa cars did not offer was reliability and an North American dealer network that knew how to service or sell their products. Consequently in 1995 Alfa abandoned the US market. Now it is the Alfa Giulia taking aim at the BMW 3-series. The Fiat/Chrysler group has a lot of resources (think Ferrari), and the engineering chops to beat BMW at its own game, but it will take a long time to build a reliable dealer network, not to mention the quality issues that have dogged them for decades. Alfa will follow what has become a familiar recipe to challenge the 3-series. With 3 sets of trim available, the most affordable model, the Giulia, and further upscale, Giulia ti, both with a turbocharged 4-banger and 276 HP compares favorably with the BMW 328i and the Audi A4. The 505 HP Giulia flagship is shooting for the M4/3. Good luck with that, Alfa. A delayed introduction hints of troubles to come. Unfortunately for Alfa both the Audi A4 and BMW 3-series have millions of dedicated fans, most of whom do not have to be reminded about their automobile's pedigree. Millennial have never had the chance to aspire for an Alfa, and the older generations that still remember them are only a very small share of the market. Alfa has to avoid joining the automotive graveyard of models that have tried to attain BMW's status. Just to be cruel I will mention the Cadillac Cimarron. If you are too young to remember, it was the cheapest Chevy front wheel drive platform with a Cadillac badge. Panned by both GM management and the automotive press, it was a spectacular flop. I hope that the executives of the Fiat/Chrysler group remember it well. We do not need a Fiat in a stylish suit.

Ram, Jeep redesigns on hold, Alfa Romeo models may come sooner

Last summer, FCA outlined an ambitious five-year plan that sketched out the company's product intentions for each of its brands through the end of 2018. However, even the best strategies sometimes need tweaking. According to Reuters after speaking with unnamed people at auto suppliers, FCA is now possibly delaying at least a dozen projects in North America for a variety of reasons. From vehicle to vehicle, these postponements allegedly last anywhere from just a few months to over a year. The sources from the suppliers claim that in some cases these tweaks are for engineering and design changes. The next-gen Ram 1500 reportedly has among the shorter delays and is being pushed from mid-2017 to November 2017, according to Reuters. Also, the much-discussed future Jeep Wrangler is allegedly moving a little later to July 2017. Among the vehicles purportedly seeing longer delays, the next-gen Grand Cherokee could get pushed back about a year to 2018. That then forces the launch of the three-row, luxury Grand Wagoneer to be even further away. Jeep's upcoming C-segment CUV and the all-new Chrysler 300, Dodge Charger, and Challenger might also see postponements. The one brand allegedly seeing an accelerated plan is Alfa Romeo. Without going into detail, the sources from these suppliers claim that the Italian automaker is getting even more vehicles for its lineup and could get them even faster than planned. "Those plans need to be flexible and fluid, with the potential to add some vehicles, pull some forward and extend the life cycle of others," FCA said to Reuters about all of these allegations. "We look at these programs on a vehicle-by-vehicle basis." Investment in the auto industry has been a major topic for FCA CEO Sergio Marchionne as of late. He believes consolidation is necessary so that companies aren't burning money on the same projects. I love the Disco Volante Spyder

For the past couple of years, Touring Superleggera has always given me reason to pause at the Geneva Motor Show. Casually sitting on the company's rotating stand is the Disco Volante, an absolutely exquisite version of the Alfa Romeo 8C with custom bodywork. I first saw it in red, then green, and now in a powder blue, as a Spyder. Only seven of these open-top Discos will be built, and I want one. Photos do not do this car justice – you really have to see it in person. For those of you who won't make it to Geneva this year, this video gives a better look at the curves and lines of Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera's creation. The tuning house is celebrating its 90th anniversary this year, and the new Disco Volante Spyder is (arguably) some of its finest work. Plus, bonus points for the name alone. How cool would it be to tell your friends you've got a Disco Volante in the driveway? But don't just take my word for it. Have a look at the gorgeous little two-door in the gallery below.
