Honda slowing US production due to ports dispute

The labor dispute that idled 29 ports on the West Coast last the weekend, including Los Angeles and Long Beach, CA, is about to make its effects felt on the showroom floor, according to Reuters. Honda, Toyota and Subaru have been trying to work around the labor disagreement, cutting overtime and airlifting parts to factories, but Honda says parts shortages at plants in Indiana, Ohio and Ontario, Canada, are now severe enough to impede production. The lack of transmissions and some electronic components will slow output of the Honda Accord, Civic, and CR-V – as well as unnamed Acuras. The three affected factories will rework their production schedules from Feb. 16-23. The ports have reopened this week, and US Labor Secretary Tom Perez has flown to San Francisco to mediate a new agreement between the 20,000 dockworkers represented by the International Longshore and Warehouse Union and the Pacific Maritime Association, which represents the terminals and shipping companies. Talks have been going on for almost nine months and the issues aren't settled; meanwhile, the West Coast ports that handle half the nation's maritime cargo and 70 percent of cargo from Asia are putting all kinds of industries on the ropes, and it's estimated to cost the economy $2 billion a day. Suspect leads LAPD on slow speed chase down the 405

A man wanted for attempted murder led Los Angeles police on a strange and erratic chase along the 405 freeway earlier this week. According to KABC, Marcos Tulio Flores was wanted by the LAPD for allegedly shooting his sister-in-law early on January 8. On the evening of January 9, police spotted Flores driving a silver Acura around Sherman Way at about 10:40 p.m. and gave chase. With police on his tail, Flores fled down Sherman Way. As he drove along, he sped up, slowed down, occasionally stopped, and got out of the car to taunt police. Eventually, he jumped on the 101 and then on to the 405 with dozens of cruisers and interceptors in pursuit. Once he was on the 405, which the LAPD immediately shut down in both directions, he began firing at the pursuing police vehicles. Thankfully, despite Flores and officers firing wild from moving vehicles, no one was hit during the short firefight. "This is one of the most intense chase scenes I've ever seen," said KABC reporter Desmond Shaw who was riding in the station's Sky2 helicopter. At around 12:20 a.m., Flores approached the Sunset Boulevard off ramp and pursuing officers decided that they'd had enough of his shenanigans. Police called in two SWAT vehicles which hemmed him in and forced him to stop using a PIT maneuver. Officers then sent in a K-9 unit to bring Flores down. Once the dog had him under control, police arrested him and charged Flores with attempted murder. Related Video:

The Detroit Auto Show clearly has its swagger back, and the 2015 edition will be a veritable feast for the enthusiast senses. We're talking serious performance, and it will be exhibited in a variety of forms. Sports cars. Supercars. Muscle-bound luxury cars. They're all set for splashy debuts in January in the Motor City. It's another signpost that companies have recovered from the global economic crisis that gripped the industry from 2008-09. For a while, automakers played it safe at Detroit and other shows. Environmentally friendly cars were important, especially for General Motors and Chrysler that were living on loans from Uncle Sam. Ford, Toyota and other companies generally focused on their best-selling or core models. With a few notable exceptions, recent auto shows have been a bit more buttoned-down than in the past. Boring probably isn't the right word, but austerity has been reality. That's changing. Car companies are making money. Sales are up. Aside from the many nagging recalls – and they are notable – the industry now has the time and energy to make performance cars a priority. That will be offered in hard evidence in Detroit. A year from now when we look back at this auto show, we'll sum it up with one word: Horsepower. But make no mistake, this isn't frivolous. Sports and luxury cars are expensive. They're profitable. They boost images and highlight strengths. With that in mind, here are five significant performance-oriented reveals to watch for when the show kicks off in less than two weeks. 2016 Acura NSX Acura's reborn NSX is a strong bet to earn plenty of votes for our Editors' Choice awards. It's one of the most anticipated – and strung-out – reveals of the year. Think back: we actually saw an NSX concept at the 2012 Detroit show, and Acura has spent the last three years teasing the car in a variety of ways. The slow burn, however, means we know a lot about the NSX. It's will use a mid-mounted twin-turbo hybrid powertrain and run with all-wheel drive. It will also wear an innovative zirconium e-coat paint, a new paint process that Honda says is more environmentally friendly. Honda has also said it will build the new NSX in Ohio, where a large part of the car's development work has been done. The original NSX was produced from 1990-2005 and helped establish Acura's performance credentials in the United States. It was a landmark car and a shot across the bow of Ferrari, Lamborghini and others.
