2004 Volvo V40 LSE (S40 Wagon) – 1 owner, no accidents,
Florida car
- Private Seller
- One owner
- No Accidents
- Always Garaged
- Drives excellent
Up for sale is our 2004 Volvo V40 turbo wagon. This is a one
owner car that has spent its entire life in Florida and has always been
garaged. The car has never been in an accident or other mishap – all the paint
is original. No one has ever smoked in it and no pets
have ever been inside. That said, it is still a used car, so be realistic and
expect to find a few a few rock chips and door dings here and there if you look
carefully – However I think one would be hard pressed to find a car with this
age in better condition.
This car was used for commuting until 2009 when it was
replaced by a new car. We couldn’t bring ourselves to sell it so it became our
spare car being driven occasionally. We would like to see it go to someone who
will enjoy it as much as we did. I am very meticulous about my cars’
maintenance and don’t cut any corners and have only used original Volvo parts
on it. I have been doing the oil changes myself every 5,000 miles with Mobil 1.
Everything on the car, mechanical and electrical, works as it should. This car
has been maintained by Warren Henry Volvo, Weston Volvo and by an excellent
independent Volvo mechanic that I will happily refer the new owner to if interested.
For those who are not familiar with the V40, it is
essentially the station wagon of the Phase II S40 that was made from 2000 to
2004. For Phase II Volvo made several engineering improvements to its design
meaning that most of the bugs of the first phase have been fixed and it became
a much more reliable car. We have had little issues with it since we bought it
new 9 years ago.
This specific version of the V40 is called LSE (Limited
Sport Edition) which was only available on the last year of production (2004)
and means that the car is fully loaded and has a very unique, beautiful,
Virtual Blue color. The main upgrades are: full leather, sunroof, premium
sound, 8-way power driver’s seat, fog lights, rear spoiler, chrome door handles
and my favorite: factory 16” BBS wheels that still look spectacular.
All the major maintenance items that need attention in this
car have already been taken care of:
- New timing belt and water pump at 101K miles
- 4 new motor mounts at 104K miles
- Entire PCV system (breather box and pipes)
replaced at 105K miles (the old one was perfectly clean but I changed it anyway
since this is a major issue in Volvos)
- New front axles at around 80K miles
- Other recent maintenance: spark plugs,
transmission fluid drain/fill, ignition wires, fuel filter, air filter, fuel
pressure regulator, new battery Jan/2013
- Front Strut bearing replaced on Dec/2013, along
with balancing and alignment.
-
In the past I have replaced the CEM (Central
Electronic Module) and also had the headliner re-upholstered when it began to
sag – so I imagine the next owner will not have to deal with those common
issues.
The car has window tint all around (the back window tint has
a crease and could use a replacement) and an US-SPEC Ipod adapter that allow
you to connect an Iphone or Ipod to its sound system. A Haynes Manual for the
S40/V40 is also included. The tire thread is 6/32" in the front and 4/32" in the rear.
In interest of full disclosure here are the things that are
not great:
- The front windshield was professionally repaired
back in 2009 by Autolite for a 3” crack at its center-bottom due to hitting a pebble at the highway. If you look for it you can find the crack, but it is not
noticeable otherwise and it is not in the line of sight of either driver or
passenger (it is mostly behind the wiper). I included a picture of it.
- There is an area of about 12” in the trunk where
the carpet was damaged by a spill and it is bare. Picture of it also included.
- The driver's seat shows some some normal wear. The passenger seat has little wear and the backseat has minimal wear
- The front of the car has normal stone chips from driving on the highway. There are a few scratches here and there (I tried to show the most noticeable ones in the pictures) and as long as I can see there is one noticeable door ding, next to the fuel door (also shown in the pictures)
- The radio antenna plastic trim has peeled off and could use a replacement
- Several years ago someone doing an oil change bent
one of the slits under the oil cap that serves to deflect the oil being sprayed
up from inside the engine. As a result, when the engine ran, a little bit of
oil was being sprayed onto the cap, and with time oil started seeping and
accumulating on the top of the engine. I installed a new cap, new seals,
however the only effective solution I found was to cut a round piece of
aluminum and place it over the slits, so that the oil that is sprayed there
drips back into the engine. This has solved the problem for good, but keep in
mind what the little piece of aluminum is there for next time you change the
oil and put it back on.
I have made an effort to represent the car in the most honest and comprehensive way and as you can see, there is no deferred maintenance, everything
is up to date and I would have no hesitations in using this car as a daily
driver again. If you are looking for an elegant and distinct car that has been
very well taken care of and has the safety and performance of a Volvo, then
this may be the car for you.
The car is located in Plantation, FL – I can arrange for in
person inspections, send me a text to 650-924-2441. Will also be happy to
answer any questions you may have.
Here you can see the area in the trunk
where the carpet is damaged:
Scratch touched-up on the rear quarter-panel
Touched-up scratch on driver's door
Door ding next to fuel door
Paint peel and stone chips on driver's rearview mirror:
3" crack on windshield behind wipers:
Plastic trim around wipers is a little faded:
Ipod connection
Note there is no oil accumulation on top of engine (no leaks)

In the excitement over Amazon's new motoring show, it's important to remember that there's a certain series from the BBC that's attempting to get its mojo back for a 24th season. Yes, we're talking about Top Gear. Since Chris Evans' departure earlier this year, Top Gear news has been relatively sparse, particularly as The Grand Tour and its hosts Jeremy Clarkson, James May, and Richard Hammond seized headlines. But on Christmas, watchers of the series' YouTube channel caught a glimpse of the first scene from the next season. Featuring hosts Matt LeBlanc, Chris Harris, and Rory Reid in what looks like a trio of old, dilapidated cars. We're thinking TG is running a taxi comparison. There's a London black cab and a Mercedes-Benz W210 – a favorite of European cabbies – but we aren't sure where Harris' boxy wagon fits in. Did the Volvo 850 Estate ever serve as a livery vehicle? But it's the basis for this comparison that's weird, because the hosts appear to be having a no-hands drag race. The cars veer off in different directions, traveling across what looks like a snow-covered dirt lot. We're assuming hilarity ensues. And while we don't quite know what they're hoping to accomplish, we are looking forward to watching it go down. Top Gear's 24th season doesn't have an official air date, and the video ends only with a cryptic "Coming Soon." Expect to hear more in the next few months.

Volvo, like an overwhelming majority of its peers and rivals, sells more SUVs and crossovers than sedans and station wagons. It confirmed plans to pivot away from low-riding models in 2021, but it stressed that it's not ready to throw in the towel in either segment quite yet. "Yes, the [V and S lines] will be replaced with something even more attractive to customers," affirmed company boss Hakan Samuelsson in an interview with British magazine Autocar. His comments come as a relief for Volvo wagon fans around the world, given that in 2021 he had said that the company needs "to move [on] from wagons and sedans." There's a catch, though: Future V and S models will look quite different than today's. Samuelsson (who will step down from his position in March 2022) acknowledged that Volvo needs lower-riding cars but noted that their design will evolve and become "maybe a little less square." It's not just about style, either. "Cars will be less boxy in the future, when we need to have lower air resistance. You could call it coupe-ish. We talk a lot about range in electric cars, but I think we will start looking at energy efficiency, and of course air resistance will be very central to that," he said. It helps that sleeker designs help keep buyers interested in sedans. Volvo's S90 and V90 were introduced and 2015 and 2016, respectively, so they're expected to be replaced in the not-too-distant future. One point that's still up in the air is what they'll be called. The Swedish company is preparing to ditch its alphanumerical naming system in order to give its cars an actual name, so both nameplates will die with the current-generation models. We'll have a better idea of what the future has in store when the XC90's replacement arrives later in 2022 with a new name, a new architecture, and a large serving of new technology.
