1973 Volvo 1800es Wagon on 2040-cars

Year:1973 Mileage:44455
Location:

Petaluma, California, United States

I am selling my 1973 Volvo 1800ES.  The vehicle is in excellent condition!  Selling to finance a project car.  Volvo 1800 history is extraordinary and worth the additional research.  This particular model was only manufactured for the 1972 and 1973 model years and only about 8,077 1800 ES's were produced, making this a very rare vehicle.  I am the second owner of this lifelong California car.  Adding to its rarity and value, this ES only has 44,455 original miles and the vehicle is in excellent condition.  This vehicle has been kept garaged its entire life, and the car was not driven by the original owner for over 20 years, hence the low mileage.  The original paint is also in excellent condition, showing only minor stress marks, very minor blemishes and very small dime-sized or smaller dents.  In photos, I've tried to show the very minor rust spots along some of the trim and the rails.  A 4 in. x 4 in. dent in the right-front quarter panel was the only damage to this car and has since been pulled out and re-painted to match.  I will include extra parts, to include some of the original parts that were removed and replaced with new OEM parts.  As a bonus, I am including brand new, still in the original 40+ year-old packaging, driver-side and passenger-side Volvo floor mats to match the original color carpeted floor.  I will include automotive ramps in this sale as well.

Also worth a mention, I am including the original leather luggage straps.  These are almost impossible to find and I've never seen them offered in new original condition.  I've kept the straps in the original packaging and have not opened it.  Included is the original owners manual, dealer brochures and other paperwork. The Volvo 1800ES Service Manual, included, is required for any serious collector/DIY'er. I've listed additional information, improvements and repairs I've made, statistical information about the car and any current issues below. To respect the history and integrity of this vehicle, I've endeavored to keep everything original as possible, unless drivability or safety was a factor. A couple minor improvements were aesthetic but used OEM parts (exception is the fuel pump, as noted below). Registration is up to date through 2015.

Vehicle Specifications:
Engine - B20F - 4-Cylinder Bosch fuel injected, water cooled. 112 horse-power at max output 6,000 RPM.
Transmission/Gearbox - M41 4-speed synchromesh manual transmission with Overdrive; Diaphram spring clutch
Fuel Tank - Capacity 11.9 gallons unleaded (good with 91 octane as intended by Volvo)
Gauges - Speedometer, Odometer, Tachometer, Tripmeter, Coolant Temp, Oil Temp (not working), Oil Pressure, Fuel Guage, Clock (not working), Lighting Controls, Hazard Warning, Warning Lights for charging, high-beams, turn indicators, overdrive, hand-brake (aka E-brake), brake failure warning, ignition key warning, fasten seat-belt warning, heater controls.
Wheels - Pressed steel wheels 15" and 195/65 R15 91H rated tires (stock tire dimensions 185/70 R15)
Body - Integrated all-welded steel. Rust-proofed and undercoated. Reinforced doors and energy-absorbing bumpers front and rear (was a mentionable feature at the time).
Brakes - 4-wheel disc brakes, featuring a dual-circuit, power assisted brake system.  Each circuit operates on both front wheels and one each of the rear wheels.
Other - Three point belts up front, lap belts in rear, laminated windshield with factory tinted glass, windshield wipers and pumped washer fluid, thermostat controlled heating system with two-stage blower, lockable storage compartment between front seats, day/night rearview mirror, passenger grab handle, head restraints, electrically heated rear window/defrost, towing points front and rear, luggage straps (As you can see, most of this equipment is expected in today's vehicles, but Volvo was ahead of its time in many ways, notably in the area of safety).
Stereo - Original Volvo stereo upgraded Blaupunkt when purchased new.  I have the original Blaupunkt Car Radio Owners Manual and will include with sale (Note: The front speakers are not working properly and are either blown or deteriorated.  I replaced the rear speakers which work fine and I've retained the original speaker covers as shown in photos).  The Antenna is automatic, and controlled by a knob on the dashboard.

Improvements/Replaced:
Fuel System - Replaced fuel tank, fuel sending unit, gasket and screws to OE spec.  New fuel hoses, clamps, injectors, filler neck hose and gaskets.
Rubber protectors for D-Jet Bosch Injectors
Oil filler cap hose to air induction
Oil Pressure Sender
Fan and timing belt
Rubber tailgate spacers under and outer glass strut
Battery, terminal protectors and cable connector
All fluids drained and changed (engine oil and filter, transmission fluid, steering fluid, rear differential fluid, radiator fluid, brake fluid (bled twice), magnetic oil drain plug)
Radiator hoses and clamps
Bosch Coil; Petronix System (removed points/condensor but have extra if you want to switch back.  Also have the original coil which should still work)
Oil Trap Hose
Oil Pressure Hose
Gravel Protectors for rear fender (left and right)
Brake and clutch pedal pads
Fuel Pressure Regulator for D-Jet
Front and rear brake hoses
Cold start valve for D-Jet (used)
4 new tires
Radiator cap
Expansion cap
Thermostat and new heater hoses
Plugs, wires, cap and rotor
Coolant temp sensor
Fuel Pump - MSD-2225 Rotary Vane electronic fuel pump
Suspension - left and right tie rods, spacers, bushings, endlinks, center steering rod bushings and links
Speedometer cable
Air Temperature Sensor
Air filter
Hood Insulation and new hood seal
Defroster Hoses
Clutch spring
Fuel Door Seal
Rebuilt steering box
Right and Left Axle Limiting Straps
Valve Cover gasket (extra gaskets included in sale) - I had the original valve cover chromed as shown in photos and added the valve cover hold down kit (have the original screws if you want to switch back).
New belts

Issues:
Driver's side door handle is broken.  I have the flange and new clips.
Speedometer/Odometer gauge is not working.  I have no more than 100 miles on the not working gauge.  I've replaced the speedo cable and cleaned and checked the gears to the cable.  All seems to be operating fine, but it may need a new pin.  I sent the gauge out to Nisonger in NY for a complete once over and refurbish. I may have this issue fixed before sale, but this will otherwise be an 'as is' item for the new owner.
Muffler is rusted through, which is expected of a 40-year old "super" vehicle.  Undercarriage otherwise looks fantastic.  As a side note, I have never taken the vehicle out when wet or raining, the entire time I've owned it.
As seller, I've made every effort to describe this vehicle as accurately as possible in its current condition.  It is not feasible to mention every minor detail of the vehicle in this post. However, I will provide any additional information and I encourage prospective buyers to ask any additional questions.

2021 Volvo V90 T6 Road Test | The best-kept secret

Mon, Nov 16 2020

Against all odds and sales sense, the 2021 Volvo V90 is still kicking and available to order in the United States. Not only that, but Volvo gave it a mini mid-cycle update this year, altering the styling and adding more tech. It’s still disappointing that Volvo doesnÂ’t keep any V90s in stock at dealers, but it looks like the best way to sell a wagon in this country is to make it order-only like the Mercedes-AMG E 63 S or Audi RS6 Avant. Well, that, or lift it and apply body cladding as in the case of the V90's Cross Country sibling. Dealers do carry those. However, youÂ’ll be glad that you took the time to special order the non-lifted, uncladded V90. It's a design masterpiece; a full-size family vehicle that forces you to look back at it every time you walk away. Volvo hasnÂ’t struck out with a single design over the past few years, and this V90 is surely the brandÂ’s crowning achievement. Proportions, stance, lighting and wheels; all of it is pleasing to the eye. The hugely useful cargo area and big back seat just raise the bar even higher. That a vehicle can be as practical as this one is, handle like a car and still look this good just makes it even more appealing. This Volvo goes from point A to point B like a member of the Swedish royal family sweeping across a crowded ballroom centuries ago. Poised and elegant, the V90 silently wafts down the road riding on a pillowy air suspension. ThereÂ’s no rush. Curious eyes turn to catch a glimpse of something they rarely see. Yet the V90 never demands anybody take notice with extravagant creases or a gaudy grille. It just exists in this glamorous state of purist wagon nirvana. Simplicity tends to breed the most appealing car designs, but labeling the V90 as simplistic would be a misnomer. This Inscription trim V90 is adorned with just the right amount of shiny chrome, highlighting the sharp styling and drawing the eye downward. VolvoÂ’s updates serve to smooth out the front and rear fascias even further, going so far as to delete the rear exhaust outlet in the bumper in favor of an invisible under-car exit. It suits the wagonÂ’s attitude and also serves to prepare our eyes for an electric future. A new and much more intricate rear LED taillight design animates a friendly “hello” from bottom-to-top at the press of the unlock button, or top-to-bottom for “goodbye.” The new 20-inch wheel design completes the picture with a striking bright and dark two-tone finish.

Volvo launches next-gen Sensus Connect infotainment system [w/videos]

Fri, 10 Jan 2014

To borrow a line from another automaker, the Volvo S60 has the power to surprise - it's likely not top of mind for most entry-level luxury sedan buyers, but it's good enough that it probably should be. There's long been one pretty serious chink in its armor, though, and that goes for the company's entire model line: infotainment. The Swedish marque's offerings just haven't been that feature-rich, but Volvo is working to improve things with its updated Sensus Connect, a suite of functions just launched at this week's CES in Las Vegas.
The new system updates center on cloud-based connectivity advancements that include a novel Park&Pay feature that allows drivers to search for parking and pay for their space from the comfort of their car. Other functions that show off the diversity of Sensus Connect include embedded, Pandora-streaming internet radio, Wikipedia, remote start via smart phone, dealer appointment booking, destination attraction searches and an available wifi hotspot.
All of this increased functionality sounds like a big step in the right direction, and Volvo is noting it has refreshed the system's interface with "graphically themed center and driver displays" along with improved voice control and text-to-speech capabilities.

Next-generation Volvo XC90 interior revealed

Tue, 27 May 2014

Volvo has officially kicked off the slow burn that will lead to the eventual unveiling of the next-generation XC90, in August. Its initial foray into the public eye will be with these, a series of 20 images of the new three-row SUVs interior, which is very, very Swedish (there are even the most adorable little Swedish flags on the seats).
In all, it looks like a positively sumptuous place to sit, with sharp looking woods and a crystal shifter, crafted by Orrefors Glassworks in Sweden. It's a clean, minimalist design that we imagine will age quite nicely.
Featured quite prominently - and the main part of the cabin that doesn't strike us as minimalist - is the very large touchscreen. Aligned in a portrait layout, which hasn't been done by too many automakers, it will be home to a new type of infotainment system that will make its debut in Volvo's flagship SUV. It also looks like we can expect digital gauges when the XC90 finally arrives.
