![]() 2 owners from new All receipts from new Rare overdrive option Up for bids here on eBay is this very well documented Volvo 122S. Bought new in Southern California, the car remained with its original owners until 2005, when it was sold to a Volvo enthusiast and collector in Washington State. The car comes with every service receipt from new as well as the original manuals and dealer paperwork. This car is a textbook example of what happens when pride of ownership meets Volvo build quality. Not only is it in excellent running order, it is 100% rust free and original, a West Coast survivor car that's been cared for from day one.
The car has had one repaint in its original color of Light Green, code 91. This is arguably one of the best Amazon colors and was only available in 66 and 67. The paint quality on the car is to good driver standards - it shows a few chips here and there and some minor overspray on some of the rubber seals. The paint has good lustre and shine and overall presents very well, it's good enough for local shows but not so perfect that you'd be afraid to really get out there and drive it. The body on this 122 is very straight with no dents or areas of waviness, I have not detected any bondo anywhere on the body and the undercarriage is likewise solid and original. I have inspected the car from top to bottom and have found zero rust issues, pretty remarkable for its age. Panel fit is all good with consistent gaps. The glass are all original Sunex pieces in great shape, the windshield is a Volvo branded replacement and is crystal clear. Tires are classic Michelin XA4's with lots of tread and no sidewall checking. The side trim shows a few little dings, doing their job I guess. All of the chrome on the car is in good shape with no pitting. The rear bumper has been rechromed, the front is still original and shows some age related fading. Neither bumper have any dings or dents, another testament to this car's charmed life. Lights and lenses are all in excellent condition. The CA black plates you see in the photos are the ones issued to the car in 1966, they will be included with the sale. Also included:
Clean trunk area with an OE Volvo replacement gas tank. The trunk exhibits no rust issues, one look under the parcel shelf and you can tell that this trunk was never wet. The green interior completes this classic 122 color scheme. The seats are in excellent condition with no splits, tears or scuffs, they're very nice. The rubber flooring shows some areas of wear, overall though it's hanging in there pretty well after 47 years. The dash pad has one split above the instrument binnacle, these are very easy to replace and are readily available from suppliers. Step plates are in good original condition, windlacing is new. Door panels are terrific, door weatherstripping is new. Nice steering wheel with no cracks. Back seat is excellent, side panels present as new. All gauges and lights work correctly, dash shows the optional hazard function, overdrive switch and indicator light. The heater and fan are very effective and will singe your socks in typical Swedish style. Radio works, original seat belts are in good shape. The B20 motor was rebuilt about 15,000 miles ago, it fires right up and runs super. I just returned from a 200 mile freeway trip and the car was brilliant. This Volvo cruises comfortably at 75 with power to spare - it runs down the road straight and true, brakes well, handles great, shifts perfectly and the overdrive makes long distance touring a pleasure. The motor has the Weber upgrade with a classic IPD intake and K&N filter. The Crane electronic ignition means no more points to look after. The undercarriage shows an IPD swaybar, Bilstein shocks and a new exhaust mated to an IPD header, . Floorpans and rockers are all original and just as nice as you'd want to find them, a standout example of Volvo's venerable Amazon series. Click here for a slideshow of all of the enlarged images. Volvo V90 Cross Country vs V60 Cross Country Luggage Test | Comparing cargo areas
Fri, Jun 4 2021While the Audi A6 Allroad and Mercedes E 450 All-Terrain have disappointed us with their poseur levels of capability and questionable value, that is not the case with the other midsize luxury off-roadish wagon: the 2021 Volvo V90 Cross Country. It has genuinely useful extra ground clearance and a lower, more sensible price. But what about that other element of wagon goodness, utility? Although I have not luggage-tested the Allroad or All-Terrain, Road Test Editor Zac Palmer effectively did so using different luggage and different A6/E-Class wagon variants. Our results are therefore only vaguely comparable. My guess is the Mercedes would win the day and the V90 would top the Audi, but again, that's just a guess. I have, however, luggage-tested Volvo's smaller off-roadish wagon, the V60 Cross Country. Surprisingly, the difference between Cross Countries isn't that great. According to Volvo's wonderfully detailed cargo specifications that indicate what exactly they measured (hint hint, every other car company), the V90 Cross Country (above left) has 25.5 cubic-feet of space behind the back seat from floor to roof. The V60 Cross Country (right) has 23.2 cubic feet. That's not much of a difference. However, Volvo also provides the cargo area length from the seat base to the liftgate. That's a bigger difference on paper: 45.4 inches for the V90 and 40.7 inches for the V60. That would play out once I brought the luggage into the equation. Before we get to the bags, though, take one more look at the above comparison photo. Check out the different D pillars and specifically how much more upright the V60's are. That's my guess as to why the V90 cargo area manages to be so much longer, yet has only a minor volume difference. Same bags, same formation, different Volvo wagons. You clearly see here that there's more length available in the V90. Five inches more? I don't know about that, but you nevertheless DO get more space. As with every luggage test I do, I use two midsize roller suitcases that would need to be checked in at the airport (26 inches long, 16 wide, 11 deep), two roll-aboard suitcases that just barely fit in the overhead (24L x 15W x 10D), and one smaller roll-aboard that fits easily (23L x 15W x 10D). I also include my wife's fancy overnight bag just to spruce things up a bit (21L x 12W x 12D).
Russian auto boomtown grinds to halt over Ukraine sanctions
Tue, Apr 5 2022Thousands of auto workers have been furloughed and food prices are soaring as Western sanctions pummel the small Russian city of Kaluga and its flagship foreign carmakers, with more sanctions likely to come. The Kaluga region, 190 kilometers (120 miles) southwest of Moscow, says it has attracted more than 1.3 trillion roubles ($15 billion) in investment, mostly foreign, since 2006. But Western sanctions imposed in recent weeks after Russia sent tens of thousands of troops into Ukraine have exacerbated lingering component shortages and halted production at two flagship car plants, Germany's Volkswagen and Sweden's Volvo. A third, the PSMA Rus plant that is a joint venture between Stellantis and Mitsubishi and employs 2,000, may halt production soon due to a lack of parts, Stellantis' chief executive said last Thursday. "It is not clear what will happen. They don't give us any concrete information," said Pavel Terpugov, a welder at the PSMA Rus plant. Terpugov said he needs twice as much money to buy groceries than before the sanctions. Analysts have forecast Russian inflation could soar to 24% this year, while the economy may shrink to 2009 levels. The United States and Europe are weighing more sanctions against Russia after Ukraine accused Russian forces of civilian killings in northern Ukraine, where a mass grave was found in Bucha, outside Kyiv. Russia calls its actions in Ukraine a "special operation" and the Kremlin categorically denied any accusations related to the murder of civilians, including in Bucha. One source of hope for some in Kaluga, with its 325,000 residents, is the West may be reluctant to hurt its own companies. "Does it make sense to impose sanctions on its own plant and lose money?" said Valery Uglov, an auto mechanic at the Volkswagen plant. "Does it make sense to lose the Russian market?" "We hope to return to work as soon as possible and everyone will have confidence in the future again," Uglov said. Volkswagen, whose factory employs 4,200 people, in early March suspended operations. A spokeswoman said production remained frozen. Volvo Group, which employs over 600 people to build trucks, also suspended production. Even before the sanctions, Russian car sales had contracted from 2.8 million units from when the Volkswagen factory opened in 2007 to 1.67 million units last year, damaged by both sanctions after the 2014 annexation of Crimea and the COVID-19 pandemic.
Uber releases fleet of self-driving vehicles to select few in Pittsburgh
Wed, Sep 14 2016Starting today, a select group of Uber users in Pittsburgh, PA will have the ability to request a self-driving vehicle. If a self-driving vehicle is in the area, Uber will send it, as well as a safety driver, to drive loyal customers to their destination. The announcement to give customers the opportunity to get a ride in one of Uber's self-driving vehicles comes roughly a year and a half after the company set up its Advanced Technologies Center in the city. On Tuesday, the company offered a few members of the press the opportunity to ride in one of the company's self-driving cars. The fleet, despite Uber's collaboration with Volvo, was comprised of 14 Ford Fusions equipped with a host of self-driving technology, reports TechCrunch. Uber is giving away free rides as a way to obtain real-world testing, which is crucial for self-driving technology. Recently, nuTonomoy beat Uber to the punch by launching the world's first autonomous taxis in Singapore. While the choice to release its self-driving cars in Pittsburgh mainly comes down to the fact that its ATC is located there, the city faces four seasons and its difficult streets that are comprised of bridges, railroad lines, and an irregular grid layout will prove to be a challenge for the autonomous cars. Since the self-driving vehicles are still being tested, the cars will come with two full-time Uber employees. One employee will loosely grasp the car's steering wheel, ready to take over if something goes awry, while the other will monitor the computer's software. As TechCrunch points out, Uber's autonomous vehicles drove in a similar manner to a regular driver. It obeyed traffic laws, mimicked a driver by coming to stops gently and at other times abruptly, as well as driving slightly into another lane to dodge a poorly-parked vehicle, reports TechCrunch. There's no word on whether regular Uber customers will get a ride in one of the company's Fusions or one of the Volvo's that its working on. Automakers and companies alike have been in a race to put autonomous vehicles on the road. Tesla recently updated its Autopilot system, Apple laid off dozens of employees to reboot its self-driving car project, and Google is working giving its autonomous vehicle the ability to detect emergency vehicles. While this is a large step for Uber, vehicles with autonomous capabilities still have a long way to go.
