Volvo PV544 Sport, 1964

Very clean car, mostly rebuilt, ideal for daily or low key show use

Long before BMWs and Mercedes were sold as ‘performance’ sedans, the Volvo PV444 and 544 were one of THE sports sedans for those who wanted a sports car but had kids and the need for a roomy, dependable car.

Esthetically, copied from a 1941 American Ford Coupe, these cars were created during WWII and released to the public in 1947.  And by the early 1960s, with the more powerful 1.8 liter B18 engine, twin SU carbs, and 4 speed transmission, they were ideal for fast road or race use.  And this ‘Sport’ model even had a front sway bar.

If you are unaware of the engineering that went into these cars, one look under the back will show why they go so well….unlike the leaf springs and lever shocks of a period English sports car, the PV has coil springs, a lateral Panhard bar, trailing arms, and tube shocks.  And the B18 engine was half of a heavy duty truck V8, with five main bearings, gear drive cam, eight port head, and unbreakable components; may look like a period MG or Triumph engine but is twice as strong and far more reliable.

This car:  came from a collection in Florida…..floor pan looks great as does the body and exterior….chrome is quite nice as is paint quality and fit, interior appears to be all new, including the headliner.  A compression test showed 150-155 psi in every cylinder, zero smoke, and the oil pressure light goes out instantly and stays out.   Hard to imagine it was any better when the car was brand new.

Engine is smooth and offers lively performance, clutch and transmission work well, front end and steering feel very tight, and it has the best braking of any PV I have ever driven.

Has its original Volvo Fm radio (and it works) but I secretly hid a modern Sony stereo/CD with USB input in the glove box.  Also added a back up solid state fuel pump for extra reliability.

Trunk is spotless, exhaust is quiet, radial tires appear to be nearly new, heater works well, has seat belts, and if you don’t deceive yourself into thinking we are  suggesting this car is ready for the Pebble Beach concours, it would be fine being displayed at most any low key show.

However, far more fun is driving it.  Will cruise all day at 60,70, or 80 mph, is wicked fun on a twisty back road where it handles better than most contemporary sports cars, is quiet, refined, comfortable, and seats four WITH plenty of luggage.  All in all, quite a car for one that is (gosh!) fifty years old.

And, I suppose, because of its pre WWII ‘look,’ it gets more attention in Supermarket parking lots than cars costing ten times as much.  Parts are readily available and not very expensive, this Volvo (while light) has the ‘feel’ of incredibly solid construction (a monocoque body/chassis helps), and makes for a dandy collectors/use car.

We have tried our best to describe this car via test results, photos, and an accurate description.  As  with any fifty year old car, there is no guarantee or warrantee and the car is being sold ‘as is and where is.’  We require contact with the buyer within 24 hours, a deposit or full payment within 3 days and conclusion of the transaction within 7 days.  We can store the car for as long as you wish and can assist with transport anywhere in the world.

Volvo leads and Mini fails in JD Power's Tech Experience Index

Wed, Aug 19 2020

New cars are basically rolling computers. Everything from the engine to the infotainment runs on a series of ones and zeros, and a lot of that technology requires input from the driver. So it's no surprise that JD Power has a study designed specifically to discern which bits of tech drivers love and which bits they loathe. "New technology continues to be a primary factor in the vehicle purchase decision," says JD Power's Kristin Kolodge, executive director of driver interaction & human machine interface research. "However, it’s critical for automakers to offer features that owners find intuitive and reliable. The user experience plays a major role in whether an owner will use the technology on a regular basis or abandon it and feel like they wasted their money." The J.D. Power 2020 U.S. Tech Experience Index (TXI) Study found that Volvo owners are happiest with the technology packed inside their vehicles, followed by BMW and Cadillac, all brands that JD Power classifies as premium. The highest-rated mainstream brand is Hyundai, followed by Subaru and Kia. As was the case with the organization's Initial Quality and APEAL studies, Tesla's numbers aren't officially included because they are the only automaker that has not granted JD Power approval to contact its owners in states that require it. Tesla's projected score of 593 would have put it in second place, right behind Volvo's score of 617. The lowest-ranked brand in the TXI Study is Mini, with Porsche right behind. Diving a little bit deeper, JD Power's findings suggest that the technologies new car buyers care most about are related to helping them see their surroundings better. Camera systems, including rear-view mirror cameras and ground-view cameras, scored highest in five of the six satisfaction attributes measured in the study. The technology that owners could really do without? Gesture controls. Owners who answered JD Power's survey say they don't use gesture controls much at all after initially trying them, and they don't really care if their next vehicle has them. We have to wonder if those responses might be what kept BMW out of the top spot. The TXI Study also found that owners are split on automated driving helpers, like lane-keeping assist and automatic emergency braking. JD Power suggests that owners may need more training on those systems before they learn to trust them. Related Video: This content is hosted by a third party. Genesis cars win accolades, offer value — so why are sales so bad?

Tue, Jul 31 2018

My high-school buddy Brent Cormier was so smitten with the Genesis G80 when he saw it at an event I hosted at SXSW in 2016 he bought a used 2013 Hyundai Genesis a short time later and fell in love with the car. "It surpasses my every expectation," said Cormier, a self-described "renaissance man" who owns and runs a real estate agency with his wife Laura, is a food service executive chef and part owner of Austin-based Thin the Herd Guitars. "I was locked into Mercedes and Audi for 10 years," he added. "And felt trapped in an endless pit of maintenance costs." After owning the Genesis over the past two years — including using it as an Uber and Lyft driver to earn extra cash — Cormier learned what some frugal luxury sedan buyers and a handful of car reviewers have discovered: Genesis offers great bang for the buck compared to other premium brands and can compete with the best in terms of performance, features and comfort. Hyundai's luxury brand also earned a prominent third-party endorsement last week when for the first time Genesis topped J.D. Power's 2018 APEAL study, surpassing German luxury-performance icon Porsche. The APEAL study (which stands for Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout) "measures owners' emotional attachment and level of excitement across 77 attributes," ranging from performance to comfort, and asks nearly 68,000 owners of new 2018 models to score vehicles on a 1,000-point scale. In its second year ranked as a stand-alone brand, Genesis earned an APEAL score that bumped it up 15 points to 884 and helped push it past Porsche — and past BMW, Lincoln, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Volvo, Cadillac, Land Rover and Lexus, in order of ranking. Last month, Genesis also topped J.D. Power's Initial Quality Survey (IQS) for the first time this year. And both its models were awarded Top Safety Pick Plus ratings by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, among 11 Plus ratings in all for Korean vehicles. Despite high J.D. Power rankings and great reviews, Genesis U.S. sales were off 50 percent for the first six months of 2018 compared to 2017, and in June Genesis sold only 796 vehicles — the first time U.S. numbers dropped below 1,000 in a month. Part of Genesis's APEAL and IQS success can be attributed to its small product lineup: just two models, the G80 and G90 sedans, with a third, the 2019 G70, launching later this year. And while those numbers may help in J.D.

Volvo calls in S60 T5 over oil pressure indicator

Mon, 30 Dec 2013

As anyone with a driver's license should be able to tell you, the oil pressure indicator on a car is a vital feature. If you don't have enough oil pressure, your engine could seize up, leaving you stranded and causing catastrophic damage for both your automobile and your wallet. Worryingly, then, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says that the oil pressure indicator lamp on certain Volvo S60 models is prone to failure, prompting the manufacturer to issue a recall.
The issue pertains to MY2011-2012 Volvo S60s with turbocharged five-cylinder engines manufactured between June 22, 2010 and May 14, 2012. All told, precisely 30,929 units are affected by the recall campaign. The owners of affected models will be notified by Volvo to bring in their cars to their local dealer for a software update. See the official notice below for details.
