Bought this vintage Volvo from a mechanic in 2012. Had a number of mechanical issues from the start but we did a bunch of work and got her to a state where she was road worthy. She was a daily driver until about three months ago.

Cosmetically this car is in fantastic shape.

On the interior the leather has one small crack on the drivers seat, and some wear but all the seats are still very comfy and over-all look decent.  The dash and interior cloth are in good shape.  The lower interior plastic storage compartments on the front doors are both intact, but both are cracked.  All the gauges, warning lights, solenoids, and electrical bits work.  The dome light works but does not come on with the front doors, only the back doors actuate the switch (or manually turning it to the "on" position).  The headlights, blinkers, brake lights, hazards etc all work fine.  All the electric windows and switches work, but the rear windows are not in a race to close.  Like everything else, those window motors are 30 years old and tired, the switch contacts could be cleaned again too.  The power locks still work well by key and manually but they should be greased. New tires bought at the end of December, they probably have less than 200 miles on them...

On the exterior there are only a couple of spots.  The driver-side rear fender just behind the wheel has the only "real" rust, about the size of a couple nickels next to each other.  We just found this recently.  The sunroof (manual) works well, but at some point it did not and has some scratches on the paint where it was scraping along in and out.  Other than that, aesthetically she is a slough of compliments just waiting to be garnered.

The issues are mechanical.

The New: plugs, wires, distributor cap, rotor, timing belt, exhaust system, radiator, overdrive solenoid, and we recently replaced the starter (for no apparent reason).

Engine: she has water in the oil.  Based on the progressively deteriorating behavior leading to this most recent discovery, we believe that is a component issue such as a busted water pump that has led to the current situation, as it had been mysteriously using water while it sat for the past few months.  The bottom bolt on the timing belt cover is a bit rusty, this is located very close to the water pump so I thought it worth mentioning.  The Lambda-sond warning light is on (fuel injection) and has been since we got her. We have not pulled the injectors to pop test, and the valves tap at high rpm.  We do have new Injectors in case they are bad but have not done any of this top end engine work.

The Front Brakes are going bad again.  The brake lines have all been cleaned and/or replaced.  The brake line junction has been removed and cleaned but the warning light is still always lit, might be a bad sensor?  We have new vented rotors, calipers and pads for the front to swap on, but have not done so because...

The front McPherson Struts are tired.  The Rear Shocks aren't great either.  We have the heavy duty versions of both (sold at rockauto.com) but again, have not done the work.  The Rack-n-Pinion is also garbage.

In the end, she is a beautiful vintage Volvo, and it makes us very sad to see her go, but we have other projects looming.  She needs a good home with someone to love her, and spend more time with her than we can... and not be melted down in china.

Watch this video, then buy this 1993 Volvo wagon

Mon, 12 May 2014

Do you want to be perceived as rich and cuddly? Of course you do. Then you need to buy this car.
We know it makes no sense, but that pretty much sums up our take on the video you'll see below, in which a man by the name of Christoffer Castor, from Scania County in Southern Sweden, attempts to convince any and all who watch to buy his car. The car in question is a 1993 Volvo 240 wagon, in red with a black fabric interior.
We have quite a bit of respect for the old boxy Volvo wagons here at Autoblog, and, despite the presence of some unsightly rust on the tailgate, would gladly bum about in this particular 240. We especially appreciate the five-speed manual gearbox and that it's from the car's final year in production.

Volvo Cars leaps 22% in IPO stock debut — a big endorsement for EVs

Fri, Oct 29 2021

(Getty Images)   STOCKHOLM — Volvo Cars shares surged 22% on their Stockholm market debut on Friday after wrapping up Europe's biggest IPO of the year so far, in a boost for new issues markets and carmakers' vision of an electric future. The Gothenburg-based company cut the size of its listing and priced it at the bottom of a previously-announced range UPDATE 3-Volvo Cars gives itself $18 bln price tag as cuts IPO size - Reuters News on Monday, valuing it at just over $18 billion and making it Sweden's second largest listing yet. But the successful deal and strong market reaction — which propels the valuation to about $22 billion — is a lift for a European automotive industry that has embarked on a challenging transition towards electric vehicles (EVs). It also shows that while the euphoria over initial public offerings (IPO) in the first half of 2021 is over, the market is open for new listings of big companies with a story to tell. Volvo Cars Chief Executive Hakan Samuelsson said the listing showed a recognition of its transition plans, adding it would be key for Volvo to demonstrate it is on track to be the "fastest transformer." "There's a much bigger interest in the market to invest in electric car makers than in the conventional ones. So we better do what we said we would," he told Reuters in an interview. Shares in the carmaker, which is majority owned by China's Geely Holding, were trading at 64.70 Swedish crowns ($7.59) at 1057 GMT, after being priced at 53 crowns in the IPO. Polestar Apart from Volvo's commitment to becoming a purely electric carmaker by 2030, it also has a 49% stake in EV venture Polestar, which said in September it would go public through a $20 billion deal. Samuelsson said Polestar had a "good valuation." "They are already electric... showing in a way what the potential would be for Volvo if this (the transformation) is done in the right way." A source familiar with Volvo's transaction said the outcome of this week's IPO was good, even though investors had pushed back and forced Volvo to price at the bottom of the announced range. "The company had to compromise on size and the governance structure. They were hoping for a read across on Polestar, but they were clearly not getting that," the source said, requesting anonymity because they were not authorised to speak to the press.

Car subscription services: A slow, expensive start — but the potential is huge

Wed, Dec 26 2018

Americans are used to paying for subscriptions — to magazines and cable television, for instance — but experience shows they'll cancel when the price of admission gets too high, or there are more tempting alternatives. Cord cutters ditched nearly 1.5 million pay-TV subscriptions in 2017, according to a survey by Leichtman Research Group. Cable TV started out cheap with basic offerings, and then got expensive. The auto industry's subscription offerings are new, but they're starting out costly, and not price-competitive with traditional leasing. The upside is that they take the hassle out of car ownership for busy people by letting the service take care of maintenance, insurance, licensing and taxes. And they give consumers choice, often allowing relatively painless switches between different cars in the automakers' lineup. Subscription services also point the way toward an ownership-free auto experience, and offer an easy transition to a potential world where ride- and car-sharing will be dominant. Subscriptions are here to stay, but consumers may take a while to "get" them. Lincoln's subscription service for lightly used 2015 to 2017 models, offered through the Ford-owned Canvas beginning this year, got off to a slow start. Many early subscribers canceled. Last month, Cadillac announced it would " temporarily pause" its $1,800-per-month Book subscription service for "adjustments" as of December 1. According to the Wall Street Journal, "Snags with the back-end technology used to support the service made some customer-service functions tedious and time-consuming, adding costs for the company." The challenge for automakers is to come up with a strategy that offers consumers a compelling, affordable option to regular ownership, and one that can also make a profit. I think they'll find that sweet spot, but they're not there yet. Jack Nerad, former executive editorial director at Kelley Blue Book and author of " The Complete Idiot's Guide to Buying or Leasing a Car," points out that "A lot of people expected that subscriptions would be very valuable for people who wanted inexpensive transportation, but the reality is quite the opposite. Subscriptions are offering more choices for the wealthy.
