Must sell my beautiful Volvo 245 Wagon due to a financial hardship, otherwise I would not be selling my car, not a chance.  I am the second owner of this beautiful vehicle, which I have owned for some 3-years.  It is in excellent condition, yet, not without laundry-list of work needed, to make it perfect [which can only be expected with a vehicle of such an age], all of which is largely all cosmetic.  Since I have own it, I have invested more than $4,000 on upgrades, and was planning to do a great deal more, yet due to my current financial state, I am afraid I must sell for financial reasons.  The vehicle has very [very] low mileage for its age; on average some 5,400 mile per year.  It absolutely drives beautifully, and its 5-speed transmission makes it all more pleasurable to drive.  The car's interior is about a close to perfect as one could possibly hope for. The carpets have never been soiled, the original headliner you make think has been replaced, but it is perfectly original, and I also had custom-made 'coco mats' made for the car throughout, even in the 'cargo' area. Even the underside of the back seat, the carpeted area, is in showroom condition. The exterior of the car is also in great condition, although it could use a good professional cleaning of its clear coat, and a professional waxing, something that I had also planned to do; yet, being short of funds has this has not happened. Some recent improvements have included new [top-of-the-line] Michelin tires; general maintenance, including the change of fluids, including replacement of the cooling system fluid with Volvo coolant, replacement battery cables, where I had also planned to replace the battery with a Volvo-brand battery, but ran out of funds to do so.  I have further replaced its rear tail-lights [the original tail-lights had discolored], and have a replacement-lense [not installed] for the passenger-side headlight that has clouded, this I will include in the sale.  I have further replaced the map pocket [on the passenger-side door] and the central console, both had cracks, but have been fully replaced.  As for what work is needed, or was on my 'to-do list' to fully restore to 'new' is:  Firstly, the driver's side rear panel closest to the rear tail light was recently [gently] hit, which left a slight dent and knocked-off a piece of the rear bumper' trim, the 'fix' was appraised at $504, including the small rust spot uncovered behind the trim piece (see pic). The transmission has some linkage issue which requires one to lift up on the 'detent collar ring' on the 'shifter' when placing it in-and-out of first gear into second; it has been like this since I've owned it and it shifts so smoothly when doing so I haven't bothered to have it fixed.  The floor boards beneath the carpets are similarly in like new condition, however I did uncover a rust spot on the front passenger-side floor board after having driven through a rainstorm one day.  The rusted area was removed, treated, and patched with an EPDM membrane as a short-term fix, yet, I haven't as of yet had a new piece of metal welded in its place, also something on my 'to-do' list.  The wheel rims where sandblasted and also repainted, just before I purchased the car, and I replaced the tires [with a more appropriate size] as noted above, but I haven't been able to find replace 'wheel/hub' caps, which can be a hard item to find item. I also replaced the front grill, and have replacement trim pieces that sit on top of the headlights, but these trim pieces have yet to be installed, will also include in the sale; the front grill unit, which had discolored and was more easily replaced than restored. The plastic side- trim pieces below the doors, and paint on the side mirrors, have faded over time and need to be treated with some restorer solution, which can last up to a year. The hood hinge/guide on the driver's side needs replacement, I tried adjusting it myself, but it really needs replacement.  The temperature gauge needs to be looked at [again], sometimes when I get started in the morning it starts on the high-temperature end and works its way down, instead of starting on the low-tempurture end; I have had it replaced once, but after sometime it started to occur once again; it is t is obvious that the vehicle does not run hot, it's just something with the gauge itself.  As for the the dashboard itself, it is in very good condition, yet does has two (2) cracks on the driver's side, which aren't really detectable unless you're looking for them; I have been planning to chalk them with a 'soft' black chalking, which should repair them nicely.  And, the last two items being, the A/C compressor needs replacement, which I believe was quoted as costing some $375, and recently the 'turn signals and emergency flashers' stop working, which I believe requires the replacement of only a relay switch; yet, something again that hasn't been fixed due to my shortage of funds.  Lastly, the vehicle also comes with a 'custom care cover' that I had made, which fits beautifully and protects the vehicle nicely from the elements, and it securely fastens beneath the body of the car, with a cable & lock mechanism so it can't be removed or stolen.

In my opinion, even with this extensive 'to-do' list, you will not find a nicer, better running, Volvo 245.  I would not think of parting with my car, if I wasn't forced to do so for 'financial reasons'.  I should also say, for 'financial reasons', I have placed a very low 'reserve' on the car, far [far] less than what I have invested, and what I think it is actually worth.  Happy bidding.

Volvo Concept Coupe may see limited production

Wed, 25 Sep 2013

Despite the impressive production debuts from Porsche and BMW at this year's Frankfurt Motor Show - the 918 Spyder and the i8, respectively - there was one car that captured the attention of the press and the public alike, enough so that we awarded it our overall top pick of the show: the Volvo Concept Coupe. Most concepts never make it to production, but the car's reception has been so positive that Volvo's board of directors is considering to produce it in limited quantities, Auto Bild reports. Italian coachbuilder Bertone could handle the limited production run.
Styled after the classic P1800, the Volvo concept was similar to the new Porsche and BMW in that it was equipped with a high-performance hybrid drivetrain. But Volvo took a different route from there, giving the sleek coupe a turbocharged and supercharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor at the rear axle. All in, the combo is good for 400 horsepower and 490 pound-feet of torque.
If the Concept Coupe makes it to production, it may not get the trick hybrid drivetrain mentioned above, Motor Athority reports, but a milder plug-in hybrid setup or even just a conventional fuel-burning engine. In any case, it would be a treat if Volvo produced a fully functional, street-legal Concept Coupe, though at that point we're thinking it would be due for a name change.

The next-generation wearable will be your car

Fri, Jan 8 2016

This year's CES has had a heavy emphasis on the class of device known as the "wearable" – think about the Apple Watch, or Fitbit, if that's helpful. These devices usually piggyback off of a smartphone's hardware or some other data connection and utilize various onboard sensors and feedback devices to interact with the wearer. In the case of the Fitbit, it's health tracking through sensors that monitor your pulse and movement; for the Apple Watch and similar devices, it's all that and some more. Manufacturers seem to be developing a consensus that vehicles should be taking on some of a wearable's functionality. As evidenced by Volvo's newly announced tie-up with the Microsoft Band 2 fitness tracking wearable, car manufacturers are starting to explore how wearable devices will help drivers. The On Call app brings voice commands, spoken into the Band 2, into the mix. It'll allow you to pass an address from your smartphone's agenda right to your Volvo's nav system, or to preheat your car. Eventually, Volvo would like your car to learn things about your routines, and communicate back to you – or even, improvise to help you wake up earlier to avoid that traffic that might make you late. Do you need to buy a device, like the $249 Band 2, and always wear it to have these sorts of interactions with your car? Despite the emphasis on wearables, CES 2016 has also given us a glimmer of a vehicle future that cuts out the wearable middleman entirely. Take Audi's new Fit Driver project. The goal is to reduce driver stress levels, prevent driver fatigue, and provide a relaxing interior environment by adjusting cabin elements like seat massage, climate control, and even the interior lighting. While it focuses on a wearable device to monitor heart rate and skin temperature, the Audi itself will use on-board sensors to examine driving style and breathing rate as well as external conditions – the weather, traffic, that sort of thing. Could the seats measure skin temperature? Could the seatbelt measure heart rate? Seems like Audi might not need the wearable at all – the car's already doing most of the work. Whether there's a device on a driver's wrist or not, manufacturers seem to be developing a consensus that vehicles should be taking on some of a wearable's functionality.

Child cobalt miners: Automakers pledge ethical minerals sourcing for EVs

Wed, Nov 29 2017

BERLIN - Leading carmakers including Volkswagen and Toyota pledged on Wednesday to uphold ethical and socially responsible standards in their purchases of minerals for an expected boom in electric vehicle production. Demand for minerals such as cobalt, graphite and lithium is forecast to soar in the coming years as governments crack down on vehicle pollution and carmakers step up their investments in electric models. To cover its plans for more than 80 new models by 2025, Volkswagen alone is looking for partners in China, Europe and North America to provide battery cells and related technology worth more than 50 billion euros ($59 billion). Talks with major cobalt producers, including Glencore, at VW's Wolfsburg headquarters last week ended without a deal. More than half of the world's cobalt comes from the Democratic Republic of Congo, a country racked by political instability and legal opacity, and where child labor is used in mines. On Wednesday, a group of 10 leading passenger-car and truck manufacturers announced an initiative to jointly identify and address ethical, environmental, human and labor rights issues in raw materials sourcing. The partnership dubbed "Drive Sustainability" consists of VW, Toyota Motor Europe, Ford, Daimler, BMW, Honda, Jaguar Land Rover, Volvo Cars and truckmakers Scania and Volvo. The alliance "will assess the risks posed by the top raw materials (such as mica, cobalt, rubber and leather) in the automotive sector," said Stefan Crets of the CSR Europe business network. "This will allow Drive Sustainability to identify the most impactful activities to pursue" to address issues within the supply chain.Reporting by Andreas Cremer.Related Video: Image Credit: Michael Robinson Chavez/The Washington Post via Getty Images Green BMW Ford Honda Jaguar Land Rover Mercedes-Benz Automakers Toyota Volkswagen Volvo Green Automakers Green Culture Electric Scania ethics mining
