Listing our 1993 Volvo 240 Sedan for sale.  We have a daughter who is about to go off to college and this car is priced to sell quickly - We're very motivated sellers and are asking just $2900.00, but will entertain reasonable offers.

This is a multiple show winning car that is in very good condition.  It runs VERY well, but needs a little TLC (outlined below).  This is a VERY clean and well cared for example of the iconic Volvo 240.  With just a few small fixes, you can take it from "very good" to PERFECT.

We purchased this Volvo 240 for our daughter to use in High School  We owned a red Volvo 240 back in the early 90's and knew it would be the perfect (safe) car for our daughter.  It's basically a tank without the big gun - perfect for a teenager!  We just purchased a Toyota Prius for her to take to college, so it's time to clear some room in the driveway and find "Sven" new home.

The previous owner modified it to be a OEM+ "Sport" version of itself. So basically if Volvo offered a Volvo 244 sport package for their last year of production,  this is how they would have offered it. This car was originally delivery from Sweden in the month of June in 1993, and we have the Volvo Diplomat Delivery Papers in the Original Owners Manual.  We also have no fewer than 2 mechanic service manuals!

Providing a link to the Carfax report is difficult, but if you message me with your email address I will email you the complete PDF report.

The Good:

This car has won two first place titles at the Euro tuner's DubJam WinterJam shows, along with being a photo finalist for IPD's (#1 Volvo tuner and parts house in the U.S.) photo contest two years in a row.  From what the previous owner tells me, it has also been featured on the cover of the IPD RWD catalog, although I have never seen that catalog myself.

All routine and preventive maintenance has been taken care of by a Volvo Master Technician. I have only used synthetic oil(Mobil 1 high mileage 10w30) and Volvo Mann filters for oil changes. The car always gets noticed by Volvo enthusiasts or anyone else who realizes how iconic this car was for it's time.

These cars have been in production since the mid 70's and just like the VW Beetle there were only small tweaks done between model years. In 1993 the final production year the car was fitted with the B230L series engine which means there is an oil squirter on the back side of each cylinder (good for a VERY long life).

Also, 4-wheel ABS and a driver's side SRS airbag were standard issue, along with: power door locks, R134a A/C, power windows, power heated mirrors, AW71 automatic transmission, 3 speed wipers, power antenna (which STILL Works!), and blacked out door handles with chrome belt line trim.

The previous owner added the 15' wheels (from a Volvo 9 series I believe).  The lowered stance and the wheel upgrade REALLY make this car.  The wheels are are wrapped with Michelin HydroEdge 205/50/15 tires with a tread life warranty of 90k miles. They have only been on for about 18k miles. As you'll see in the photos, the tires look BRAND NEW.

The car also features some impressive performance upgrades, such as:

  • TME Sport Springs (Car is lower than factory and looks fantastic)
  • Seriously awesome IPD Heavy Duty Aluminum Skid Plate made for the Volvo 240
  • IPD adjustable panhard rod
  • Thicker 242 GT (performance coupe) front (21mm) and rear (23mm) anti-sway bars for less body lean in the corners
  • Front strut tower braces
  • Bilstein Touring Shocks!
  • ATE power stop disks on all 4 corners
  • Optional Volvo Voltmeter Gauge
  • Optional Volvo Small Tachometer (6500rpm redline)
  • VERY rare Volvo center armrest with 4 cup holders (2 extend front / 2 extend rear)
  • Optional Volvo headrest pads for all 4 seats
  • Volvo rear sunshade
  • Volvo heavy duty floor trays
  • New map pockets recently
  • Hella Fog Lights mounted below the front bumper
  • Tinted side and rear glass
  • Car includes an alarm system with keyless remotes, but always seemed too sensitive, so we turned off the hidden kill switch.  It's new buyer can switch it back on and mess with the sensitivity  :)
  • Also includes a hard-to-find Thule "rain gutter clamp style" rooftop Bike rack, with front wind break.
  • Includes a really cool purple valve cover on the engine.  Your mechanic will love it.  :)
  • We JUST replaced the battery.  Texas weather is brutal on batteries.  The old one let go last month.
The stereo system has been significantly upgraded and consists of a Sony CDX-GT430IP Ipod/CD/HD Radio/Sat head unit with Infinity reference speakers in the front factory mounts and Infinty reference speakers in the rear factory mounts in the hat shelf. The box in the trunk is custom to the car with 2 JL 10's and a MTX amp and it all sounds very AWESOME.

The Bad (not that bad, actually):

We purchased the car in August of 2011.  In February of 2012, the car was in a minor accident at a neighborhood intersection.  My daughter was driving at the time, and as she approached a stop sign, the LF brake line failed and she couldn't stop the car before she rear-ended a new Toyota 4Runner already stopped at the intersection.  The accident was actually too light to activate the driver-side airbag, but the height difference in the 4Runner's rear bumper (and tow/receiver hitch) and the lowered Volvo 240's front bumper meant that the grill and headlights took 100% of the impact.  With a friend's help, we replaced all the broken front end parts and had a Volvo specialist completely rebuild the entire brake system and front flexible brake hoses.  The hood was replaced and there was also some light damage at the top/front of the left front fender.  The repairs largely consisted of bolt-on parts, but you can still see a little paint damage on the top of the left fender where we straightened it.  If we were to keep the car, I would probably bring it to a body shop and have them replace that fender.

The Needed TLC Mentioned Above:

  • The driver seat grid and/or lower seat foam is failing.  This is actually a VERY common issue on the 240's.  The upholstery is fine, but the outside of the lower cushion is "leaning" a little because the cushion foam is dried out.  There is a company called Wagonmeister dot com that has an excellent (better than OEM) fix for the cushion and grid issue.
  • The A/C was working last summer, but has stopped working recently.  All the fans blow, and the switch seems to work, but the compressor clutch doesn't seem to switch on.  I'll have our mechanic look at it next week to determine the cause.  If it's something stupid like a wire, relay or fuse - I will get it fixed.  One of the lines going into the firewall is pinched (it's highlighted in one of the photos), but it was that way last year and still worked fine (abet slightly less than a perfectly working AC).
  • The power window switches on the driver's door are working fine, but the driver's side window switch recently "dropped" a little in the array.  It still works, but should probably be changed soon.  I'm sure it's a cheap fix.
  • The factory Volvo cruise control is not currently working, but this sale DOES include the part (new stalk/switches) to get it working again.
  • There is a small crack in the dash, where the instrument "cover" meets the flat part of the dash.  We've always has a dash cover on it (included) so didn't even notice the small crack until we photographed it for this sale.  The rest of the interior is in remarkable condition of any car, much less a 200k survivor!

Car has a clean title (Carfax available upon request).  The previous owner in New Orleans was technically the 3rd owner of the car.  At one point he had transferred the title from his father, but ownership was always his.  We consider ourselves the 4th owners of this car.

This Volvo 240 has been described and photographed so you can know all facets of its condition, however it is still a 20 year old car with over 200,000 miles on it.  It will most likely serve it's next owner for another 100k+ miles, but we make no guarantees and the car is sold AS-IS.  The car is available for pickup in the Dallas, Texas area.  Delivery and transportation are the responsibility of the purchaser.

If you have any questions, please feel free to call me at 214-233-6844 between the hours of 9am and 9pm central time.  The car is listed locally and we reserve the right to end this listing at any time.

Ebayers with zero or negative feedback must contact me prior to bidding.  Either by item purchase or Best Offer acceptance, purchaser immediately pay a $750 deposit via Paypal - no exceptions.  Remaining balance and pickup within 7 business days of item's close.  Balance paid at pickup is CASH ONLY - No cashier's checks that mysteriously don't clear 2 weeks later. If you're a scammer thinking of sending me certified funds for more than I'm asking, so you can get some cash back later  - forget it.

Volvo buyers have best credit scores among all auto shoppers

Wed, 02 Jan 2013

Experian, the US credit reporting agency, recently concluded a study into the financing and credit scores of US car buyers. One of the prime findings was that Volvo buyers enjoy the strongest credit scores among new car shoppers from all brands (nota bene, these are Experian's own numbers and can differ from other agencies). Unlike the Forbes report on the same story, though, we don't find that surprising at all, nor do we think it necessarily helps Volvo's upscale brand aspirations. The Gothenburg-based carmaker has sold its wares on tank-like safety for decades, so it seems natural that its buyers would be just as safe with and attentive to their credit scores as they are with their choice of vehicle.
Audi was ranked fourth by consumer credit score, Porsche seventh and Mercedes-Benz ninth, yet the fact that Volvo outranks them in this metric is probably a plus to its bottom line but not necessarily its image. It's not unfair to say more people desire those other luxury brands - Volvo itself has admitted as much - and people in the throes of desire have been known to be a little more let-it-ride about things like credit scores. The differences aren't huge, though: compared to Volvo's 818, Audi shoppers scored at 813, Mercedes shoppers 802. Lexus and Acura intenders took the other two steps on the top-credit-scores podium.
Mitsubishi took the honors at the other end of the charts, Experian finding that its potential customers, with an average of 604, had the lowest scores. Mitsubishi was followed by Suzuki and Dodge. On the other side of the financing table, Toyota led the way in how many of its vehicles were bought with bank assistance, followed closely by Ford, Chevrolet taking third place. Also of note, and for whatever it's worth, not one automaker made both the 'top ten by financing' and 'top ten by credit score' lists, but four made both the financing and 'bottom ten by credit score' lists: Chevrolet, Nissan, Kia and Dodge.

These are the cars with the best and worst depreciation after 5 years

Thu, Nov 19 2020

The average new vehicle sold in America loses nearly half of its initial value after five years of ownership. No surprise there; we all expect that shiny new car to start depreciating as soon as we drive it off the lot. But some vehicles lose value a lot faster than others. According to data provided by iSeeCars.com, trucks and truck-based sport utility vehicles generally hold their value better than other vehicle types, with the Jeep Wrangler — in both four-door Unlimited and standard two-door styles — and Toyota Tacoma sitting at the head of the pack. The Jeep Wrangler Unlimited's average five-year depreciation of 30.9% equals a loss in value of $12,168. That makes Jeep's four-door off-roader the best overall pick for buyers looking to minimize depreciation. The Toyota Tacoma's 32.4% loss in initial value means it loses just $10,496. The smaller dollar amount — the least amount of money lost after five years — indicates that Tacoma buyers pay less than Wrangler Unlimited buyers, on average, when they initially buy the vehicle. The standard two-door Jeep Wrangler is third on the list, depreciating 32.8% after five years and losing $10,824. Click here for a full list of the top 10 vehicles with the least depreciation over five years. On the other side of the depreciation coin, luxury sedans tend to plummet in value at a much faster rate than other vehicle types. The BMW 7 Series leads the losers with a 72.6% drop in value after five years, which equals an alarming $73,686. BMW's slightly smaller 5 Series is next, depreciating 70.1%, or $47,038, over the same period. Number three on the biggest losers list is the Nissan Leaf, the only electric vehicle to appear in the bottom 10. The electric hatchback matches the 5 Series with a 70.1% drop in value, but since it's a much cheaper vehicle, that percentage equals a much smaller $23,470 loss. New Lotus SUV could be based on Volvo architecture

Tue, Mar 20 2018

Last year, Chinese carmaker Geely upped its stake in Lotus to a majority, recently investing more money into the British brand. Now, talking with Automotive News, CEO Jean-Marc Gales says Geely has approved three new models: two sports cars and the third an SUV. The sports cars will be announced later this year, and they will reach production in 2020. The last time a properly new Lotus debuted was in 2009 with the Evora, so a decade later new products are certainly due. But what about that SUV? Autocar says that since Geely also owns Volvo, that makes it possible for Lotus to base the SUV onto the Volvo SPA platform, which is also used in the XC60 and XC90. The choice of platform would mean the SUV would have to be a four-cylinder model, but that's nothing new to Lotus. It could even use Volvo's "Twin Engine" hybrid setup, which would mean a power output of over 400 horsepower as stock, and that with Lotus' eagerness for lightness could be a potent combination. Autocar quotes Gales as saying, "It will go round bends like nothing else in its segment." The target weight for the approximately Porsche Macan-sized SUV is under 2,000 kilos (4,400 pounds), and the Macan weighs 4244 pounds in 400-hp Turbo guise. The Lotus SUV is projected to hit the market in "about four years," and it's very likely to be built in China instead of Britain, as the Chinese market is very enticing — especially for this class of vehicle. The vehicles will still be designed at Lotus' Hethel HQ. Related Video:
