The sad day has come when I have to let this reliable beauty go.  I have one too many cars and thinking about a move to the big city.  From 1992 to 2010 the car was owned by an Ivy League neuroscientist and maintained as you might expect an Ivy League neuroscientist to maintain his vehicle. Repairs under his ownership were performed by the local Volvo dealer, and I have all vehicle records documenting everything from his original purchase of the car to my last oil change. The previous owner was so aggressive about performing preventive maintenance that aside from a timing belt, motor mounts, and engine seals, I haven't had to do anything but routine maintenance since owning the car.

I purchased the car in 2010 and drove the car with mostly highway miles. The car has been very reliable, and I wouldn't hesitate to take it on a cross country trip today.

Some of the more recent repairs were done at the following mileage:

107,396: New clutch, pressure plate, and throwout bearing; resurfaced flywheel

112,197: New catalytic converter

127,031: New front/rear brakes and rotors, clean/inspect/repack wheel bearings, new lower ball joints

132,018: New muffler, exhaust pipe

137,986: New motors mounts, rear brakes, tail lamps, rear tires

140,773: New alternator, headlight bulbs

142,580: New front brakes

143,862: New timing belt, front/rear engine seals, valve gasket, all drive belts

158,000: New rear tires

167,233: New distributor cap, rotor, tailgate wiring harnesses, spark plugs

169,594: New battery

The car has some of the cosmetic flaws you might expect of a car from 1992. However, there are no major dents or dings. The paint and black trim are a little faded, but the car has very little rust as the photos attest. The interior has been normal wear. The front speakers are a mismatched Volvo/Kenwood pair, but the aftermarket Pioneer stereo has CD/USB and miniplug audio input. The rear tires are only 10,000 miles old, but the front tires should be replaced soon. Two years ago I installed a new tailgate wiring harnesses to replace the original wiring harnesses which were broken due to the stress of being routed through the tailgate hinge (a known design flaw in these Volvo wagons).  To prevent the new wiring harnesses from breaking, I routed them through the cab as opposed to through the hinges; as you can see in the photos, the wiring harnesses currently are attached to the roof to their connection in the tailgate. In the process of fixing this harness I opted to leave the central aux brake light and the rear window wiper disconnected.  The rear window wiper activation button is also stuck.  There is a 6" crack in the windshield. The AC works but could use a recharge.

Those are all the details of the few issues I am aware of.  The vehicle has been incredibly reliable, and a joy to care for.  Very sad to see this one go, and I hope to hand it on to someone who will enjoy it as much as I did.  Car also includes a Bike Rack and Cargo turtle bag that fit the vehicle and have only been used twice.

$500 will be due via PayPal within 24 hours of the auction's close. Once I have full payment I will express mail the title to you so that you can make arrangements with your state motor vehicle department for temporary registration, as the car does not have a current registration. I will store the car at no charge for 7 days after the auction's close, but unless we make arrangements otherwise on the 8th day on there will be a storage charge of $20 per day.

Volvo-based Futuricum electric truck sets Guinness range record

Mon, Sep 13 2021

There is a new Guinness World Record for the longest distance traveled by an electric truck on a single charge. Swiss-based firm Futuricum built a Volvo-based delivery truck that drove for 683 miles on a closed test track. Although the prototype used to set the record has reportedly been in regular service on Swiss roads since early 2021, the record was set on a 1.7-mile high-speed oval operated by Continental near Hanover, Germany. The truck set off with a full charge and coasted to a stop 392 laps later; two drivers split their schedule in 4.5-hour shifts. Reaching the 683-mile threshold took about 23 hours, so the truck traveled at an average speed of 31 mph. Futuricum calls this a realistic average value for the truck's intended use — it's certainly not designed for long hauls. Whether it was empty or loaded with cargo wasn't specified, and we've reached out to the company for more details. What we do know is that the drivetrain was not modified, meaning the 680-horsepower truck is equipped with a 680-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack. That's over six times bigger than the battery in a Porsche Taycan. Driving at a constant speed on a closed track is very different than delivering parcels in real-world conditions, which is what the Futuricum truck normally spends its days doing. In more normal use cases, the model (whose speed is electronically limited to about 55 mph) has a driving range of around 250 miles, according to the manufacturer. Only VW, Volvo are doing enough to electrify in Europe, study says

Wed, Jun 16 2021

Among major carmakers, Volkswagen and Volvo are doing enough to electrify their vehicle lineups in Europe, and the EU needs to set tougher CO2 emission limits if it wants to meet Green Deal targets, according to a climate group's study. Sales of battery electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids almost tripled last year, boosted by tighter emission standards and government subsidies. This summer, the European Union is expected to announce more ambitious CO2 targets; by 2030, the average CO2 emissions of new cars should be 50% below 2021 levels, versus the existing target of 37.5%. Volkswagen aims to have 55% group-wide BEV sales in Europe by 2030, while Swedish carmaker Volvo, owned by China's Geely says its lineup will be fully electric by then. VW ID4 front three quarter dark View 19 Photos Based on IHS Markit car production forecasts, according to the study from European campaign group Transport and Environment (T&E), Volkswagen and Volvo have "aggressive and credible strategies" to shift from fossil-fuel cars to electric vehicles. Others like Ford Motor Co have set ambitious targets, "but lack a robust plan to get there," T&E said. Ford plans an all-electric lineup in Europe by 2030. T&E said BMW, Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), Daimler AG and Toyota rank the worst as they have low BEV sales, have "no ambitious phase-out targets, no clear industrial strategy, and an over-reliance in the case of BMW, Daimler and Toyota on hybrids." JLR, owned by India's Tata Motors, says its luxury Jaguar brand will be all-electric by 2025, but has been less specific about electrification of its higher-volume Land Rover brand. BMW and Daimler have been reluctant to set hard deadlines for phasing out fossil-fuel cars. T&E said even if carmakers meet their targets, in 2030 BEV sales could be 10 percentage points below those needed to meet the EU's Green Deal — which targets net zero emissions by 2050. Rather than a 50% reduction in CO2 emissions by 2030, based on carmakers' existing production plans, the EU could set more ambitious targets, T&E said - an up to 35% reduction in CO2 emissions from new cars by 2025, around 50% by 2027 and up to 70% in 2030. "Targets need to be gradually tightened so that carmakers not only commit to phasing out fossil fuels, but develop a strategy that gets them there on time," Julia Poliscanova, T&E senior director for vehicles and e-mobility, said in a statement.

How does a massive Volvo truck compare to a Koenigsegg on a track?

Tue, 11 Nov 2014

Volvo Trucks thinks that its latest FH semi truck has a little sports car DNA mixed in with the ability to haul heavy loads thanks to its novel dual-clutch gearbox. And the company's marketing department certainly has an intriguing strategy to get the word out about the big rig's sporty traits. First, it staged a prank on an unsuspecting valet on the Italian Riviera, and now the FH has lined up a track battle around the Knutstorp racetrack against Sweden's ultimate supercar - a Koenigsegg One:1.
Fifth Gear host Tiff Needell takes the reins of the big Volvo and spends a little bit of time talking up its I-Shift Dual Clutch gearbox. However, the real fun is seeing the FH taking on the One:1. Of course, a head-to-head battle would hardly be fair against these extremely mismatched opponents. Instead, the challenge is for the 1,360-horsepower Koenigsegg to lap the track twice in the same time or less than the semi can do it once.
You just have to watch the video to see how if the big rig rises to the challenge. Also, scroll down to read Volvo Truck's press release touting the new gearbox, and check out the company's YouTube channel for more views of the race and a behind-the-scenes look.
