1991 Volvo 240 Base Sedan 4-door 2.3l on 2040-cars
Gallup, New Mexico, United States
For sale is my 1991 Volvo 240 (non-ABS) with 130,500 miles. I bought it in December 2013 (I’m the second owner, not counting the dealer) while living in Miami with the intention of “restoring” it and driving it indefinitely, but shortly after purchasing I had an unexpected job transfer to rural New Mexico (and then got a horse) and now I need a very different kind of vehicle. I really hate to part with it and I’d like to see it go to someone who knows and appreciates 240s. I recently drove the car from Miami to Gallup, NM and it cruised trouble-free at 80 MPH for 2,300 miles loaded with about 300 pounds of stuff and averaged 24 MPG (I only use premium fuel). I would not hesitate to drive it across the country again tomorrow. Since purchasing the car in December with about 127,500 miles, I have made many, many improvements. I have receipts for everything I bought and all work performed (it’s upwards of $13,000). The car didn’t necessarily need all of these things, but I was planning on keeping it for the long haul… - Interior completely refurbished, all broken trim pieces replaced, seat upholstery removed and cleaned, and old carpet replaced with new carpet from Custom Interiors (it’s not a factory fit and the install wasn’t perfect, but it looks good) - Added large tachometer and 52mm voltmeter and oil pressure gauges - Added white gauge faces - Replaced all interior bulbs - Added snowcaps to hood vents - New strut tower braces - New front seat bottom foam - Seat back lumbar adjustments rebuilt - Bilstein touring struts (front) and HD shocks (rear) added along with new rear overload springs from IPD - New Genuine Volvo strut mounts, spring holder plates - Engine accessory bushings replaced with poly bushings from IPD - Four new Cooper Touring tires - Front and rear sunroof seals replaced with Genuine Volvo - Paint and body work (car had a cheap gold paint job when I bought it, but I had a reputable body shop (Prestige Auto and Cycle Body works in North Miami) paint it back to the original factory color (it was sanded to bare metal and done properly) and remove all dents/dings. - New rebuilt Bosch MAF sensor from FCP Euro - New air box thermostat - New intake, exhaust manifold, and throttle body gaskets - New Genuine Volvo exhaust downpipe and Flowmaster 50-state legal catalytic converter - New Bosch 02 sensor - A/C converted to r134a using Genuine Volvo conversion kit - New A/C compressor and A/C relay - New kickdown cable, overdrive solenoid, and overdrive relay - New battery cables - New upgraded in-tank VDO fuel sending unit, pre-pump, pre-filter, seal rings - New Bosch main fuel pump and fuel filter - Replaced front and rear control arm bushings and torque rod bushings with Genuine Volvo - New ball joints, tie rod ends, end links, and associated hardware - New Genuine Volvo engine mounts and transmission mount - New brake pads and rotors - Four new Rockford Fosgate 4.25” speakers and new Stinger speaker wire - New JVC head unit (it’s a media/MP3 player, no CD) - Replaced all clips for exterior trim - Added Genuine Volvo side marker lights - New Bosch ignition coil - New oil trap, PCV hose - New engine splash pan - New windshield wipers, wiper seals and nut covers - New front windshield and gasket Service items completed within last ~2,000 miles: - New cap, rotor, plugs, wires - All new ceramic fuses - New air filter - A/C system flushed - Oil changed with Mobil 1 full synthetic, new Genuine Volvo oil pan gasket, pan nut - Trans completely flushed with Mobil 1 full synthetic, pan gasket and filter screen replaced with Genuine Volvo - Differential fluid changed with Mobil 1 full synthetic gear oil and gasket replaced with Genuine Volvo - Radiator flushed and filled with Genuine Volvo coolant - New Genuine Volvo valve cover gasket - Wheel alignment and tire balance - Timing belt and upper and lower crankshaft seals - New Genuine Volvo upper and lower radiator hoses (also included are Genuine Volvo idle air inlet and outlet hoses and heater hoses that you can install when needed) - New DieHard deep cycle battery - Injectors removed and professionally serviced (also included are a second set of Bosch injectors) Additional items you’ll get with the car: - Haynes repair manual - Transmission flush kit from IPD - A very large assortment of various spare parts both new and used Please note the following: - I’ll e-mail you the CarFax report if you ask. - The car is in very good condition, but it is 24 years old. It has external and interior wear and tear, to include some minor rock chips, a few dings, and trim and bumper wear. - There are places on the hood and trunk where the clear coat is ‘wavy’ (I guess it wasn't sprayed correctly). It’s noticeable at certain angles in the right light, but doesn’t affect the durability of the paint job. - I took the seat heaters out to repair/refurbish them. They are now good-as-new, but need to be re-installed. - The dash had a crack that I repaired (visible in pictures). It cracked again, though, in the same place. - The glove box wouldn’t stay closed when I went over bumps, so I added some Velcro strips inside. Problem solved. - Car has factory cruise control, but it doesn’t work. I haven’t tried to figure out why. - The central lock function doesn’t work. The wiring harness for it in the driver’s door was rotted (like in most 240s) so I removed it. Please ask any questions you may have before
bidding. If you’re out of town (and since I'm in Gallup, NM you probably will be), I’ll work with you to perform a third party
inspection if you desire. I’ll also make the car available for shipment pick-up, but I can’t help you arrange shipping or give you an estimate on the
cost. Following the sale, I’ll hold the car for you in my garage for up to two
weeks. The car is sold as-is, where-is
with no warranty expressed or implied. I hope to find someone that wants to buy
this car as much as I don’t want to sell it. Come take a look/drive and make me
an offer. |

US could get Chinese Volvos soon, possibly Geely joint-venture subcompact?
Tue, 28 Jan 2014After a little more than three years since Volvo was acquired by China's Geely, it was only a matter of time before products from this marriage started to show up in the US. Although nothing seems to be written in stone, Automotive News is reporting that the US could be getting Chinese-made Volvos sooner rather than later.
In speaking with AN, Volvo CEO Hakan Samuelsson said that Chinese Volvos could be exported to the US "fairly quickly," and while there was no word on any specific models being considered, the article points out that the S60 (shown above) is already being produced locally in China at a Volvo plant. Another possibility is the next-gen V40, which has reportedly received plenty of support from US Volvo dealers. Regardless of which model it is, Samuelsson doesn't seem too worried about a "Made in China" car receiving a negative reaction by US consumers, pointing to all the other Chinese products sold here.
On a global scale, AN is also reporting that Geely is working on a new subcompact platform co-developed with Volvo to compete against cars like the Honda Fit, Ford Fiesta and VW Polo. There is no word as to whether or not this Geely-branded model would be coming to the US, but just last year, we heard that the Chinese automaker is looking to break into the US market by 2016.
Poor headlights cause 40 cars to miss IIHS Top Safety Pick rating
Mon, Aug 6 2018Over the past few months, we've noticed a number of cars and SUVs that have come incredibly close to earning one of the IIHS's highest accolades, the Top Safety Pick rating. They have great crash test scores and solid automatic emergency braking and forward collision warning systems. What trips them up is headlights. That got us wondering, how many vehicles are there that are coming up short because they don't have headlights that meet the organization's criteria for an "Acceptable" or "Good" rating. This is a revision made after 2017, a year in which headlights weren't factored in for this specific award. This is also why why some vehicles, such as the Ford F-150, might have had the award last year, but have lost it for this year. We reached out to someone at IIHS to find out. He responded with the following car models. Depending on how you count, a whopping 40 models crash well enough to receive the rating, but don't get it because their headlights are either "Poor" or "Marginal." We say depending on how you count because the IIHS actual counts truck body styles differently, and the Infiniti Q70 is a special case. Apparently the version of the Q70 that has good headlights doesn't have adequate forward collision prevention technology. And the one that has good forward collision tech doesn't have good enough headlights. We've provided the entire list of vehicles below in alphabetical order. Interestingly, it seems the Volkswagen Group is having the most difficulty providing good headlights with its otherwise safe cars. It had the most models on the list at 9 split between Audi and Volkswagen. GM is next in line with 7 models. It is worth noting again that though these vehicles have subpar headlights and don't quite earn Top Safety Pick awards, that doesn't mean they're unsafe. They all score well enough in crash testing and forward collision prevention that they would get the coveted award if the lights were better.
Watch Polestar talk about the development of its super S60
Fri, 03 May 2013Polestar is getting ready to deliver its first production car, the Volvo S60 Polestar. Letting the S60 stretch its legs, Polestar Racing driver Robert Dahlgren took the blue sedan from Barcelona, Spain to Jokkmokk, Sweden - stopping for wet-weather testing in Germany along the way.
Dahlgren narrates the journey of the "pilot project" that has 350 horsepower and around 368 pound-feet of torque, and will perhaps be the first in an era of hardcore Volvo production cars. It will go on sale in Australia this Summer, with other markets "under investigation." While we non-Aussies wait with fingers crossed, there's a video below to enjoy.
