This 1989 VOLVO 240DL is being offered for sale with NO RESERVE price.  This car would be good for one of a couple situations:

1) It could be used for parts.  Since it has low miles, the parts from it are probably better than a lot of used parts you might find.  I thought about parting it out myself, but I am in the middle of remodeling a house, and I just don't have the time.
2) I believe it could be fixed up by someone who can do engine work, and it would result in a pretty good car. Other than the engine, I don't believe there would be much more significant expense that would be required to make this a daily driven car in nice condition.

The bad news:
This car overheated.  I took it to my mechanic and he said that the head gasket was probably damaged.  I am not a mechanic, so please don't ask me detailed questions about what it will take to repair it.  If you don't know what this means, you should not bid on this vehicle.  My mechanic did not tear into it, but he seemed to be fairly confident of his diagnosis.  For the purposes of bidding, you should assume the engine does not work (although I can occasionally get it started, it runs very rough).  It is not drivable, so it will require towing to move. I do not have towing capability, so you will have to get it where it is going.

On the drivers side, there are a couple spots of surface rust around the rear wheel well and lower kick panel.  On the passenger side, there is also some surface rust the corner of a door, and a quarter-sized hole in the kick panel.

The good news:

Volvo Concept Coupe is brand's 'next-generation P1800' [w/video]

Wed, 28 Aug 2013

Volvo is calling the Concept Coupe its "next-generation P1800."
The teasing can now officially come to an end - Volvo has released all the images, videos and details on its new Concept Coupe, and we're intrigued. The Swedish automaker is calling the concept its "next-generation P1800," and those are some pretty big shoes to fill. Fortunately, it's not all talk; there are clear links to Volvo's much-loved coupe in its shape, though we certainly wouldn't call the Concept Coupe 'retro.'

Volvo and Ericsson to take Spotify on the road

Thu, 27 Dec 2012

Volvo is working to bring Spotify to its vehicles. Ericsson has announced it will provide its Connected Vehicle Cloud service to Volvo for future products, and Spotify streaming music is part of that service. Like Toyota Entune and other infotainment services, the Connected Vehicle Cloud will use the driver's smartphone as a modem to stream music and serve as a base for other applications, all of which will be controllable through the vehicle interface. Expect to see the service launch in 2014, though Ericsson stresses later generations will feature an embedded modem with its own SIM card that will piggyback off of the owner's phone data plan.
But that system won't show up in production vehicles until at least 2016. In the interim, Ericsson says it will continue to work with government agencies on its car-to-car communication efforts. That program could eventually help pave the way toward autonomous road trains capable of helping vehicles travel safely together while also reducing traffic congestion. Wired has a full break down of the Connected Vehicle Cloud strategy. You can read it here.

Volvo developing new three-cylinder engine family

Mon, 25 Aug 2014

Pop the hood on a Volvo of recent vintage and you'll find four-, five-, six- and even eight-cylinder engines. But the Swedish automaker is downsizing its engines over the coming years. The new XC90, set to be revealed later this week, will use a new family of four-cylinder engines (like the one pictured above). But that's not even the end of it as emerging reports speak of a new three-cylinder engine family in the works.
The new 1.5-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine will, according to reports, help Volvo further cut its carbon emissions in line with constricting regulations in markets like Europe and Australia. There won't be quite as many versions as the four-cylinder range, which will include gasoline and diesel versions in varying states of tune, but the three-pot motor is tipped to be employed in vehicles as large as the S60 and its stablemates. Larger than that, however, and the three-cylinder engine apparently just doesn't have the necessary torque.
Expect the new three-cylinder engine to be introduced sometime later this decade, after the four-cylinder's introduction in 2016. The three-cylinder engine is also set to form the building block of an even more efficient hybrid propulsion system in the future, enabling this new engine family to stay relevant through 2025.
