V8, Air Suspension, GPS, Keyless entry/start, Premium Sound, Towing, Roof Rack, All Luxury Options

They Don't Make Them Like This Anymore.

Literally.

For Sale: 2004 VW Touareg with Computer Air Suspension, 306hp V8, plus Towing, Navigation, Roof Rack and Luxury Packages. 125k miles, excellent condition, nearly perfect mechanically, many custom extras, two (2) sets of alloy rims and tires.

This car is a beast.

For towing. In snow. Off road. Or as a user-friendly SUV.

And yet, when you get in, your first reaction to the wood and leather interior will be that it's as luxurious as the very best sedans you've been in.

Really nice.

So where's the BEAST? In the suspension. No springs, no shocks … instead four computer-controlled air pistons. Very competent but very costly. They aren't making it anymore. Too expensive. But, oh my, it delivers astounding performance. You can dial in the "Sport" or "Luxury" response. Or if you want to drive through a snow bank or cross a stream, it will go up like a funny truck. Or if you want to load a kayak or skis on top, it will kneel down like a sedan. Unreal to see it happen. On the performance tires, it will outperform a Porsche 911 through a slalom course … (!).

With the computer-controlled HI/LOW/LOCKING differential, it delivers the best off-road numbers available, short of a military vehicle. Approach/Departure 33 degrees. Breakover 27 degrees. Climb gradient 45 degrees. Fording depth 23 inches. This are real off-road credentials. The Touareg can handle the Baha Dessert. Most SUVs are good for a run though the Taco Bell.

Got horses? Or a big boat? Or a dump trailer? It tows 7 716 pounds! Best in class and better than many pickups. It has a Class IV 10000# hitch with 2" receiver. There's a YouTube showing the Touareg pulling a Boeing 747. No fooling.

Got to get through blizzard conditions no matter what? With all-season tires, the Touareg is very, very, very good in snow. With full "snowflake" tires, it feels like it can climb trees. It has FULL TIME four-wheel drive NOT "all-wheel drive". You will get through.

The other goodies: navigation, premium sound, premium Nappa leather, burl wood trim, custom keyless entry/start, custom dash, parking assist, dual climate system, tiptronic transmission, ABS, ESC, memory seats with power lumbar, premium mats/liner, moon roof, and more. The glove box is engineered as an adjustable wine cooler! Luxury that kicks ass ... and gets stuff done.

All season tires good on four (4) factory 18"x8" alloys. Summer performance tires fair on three (3) premium 20"x10" alloys (see pix). One (1) factory space saver spare mounted in vehicle. One (1) full-size spare mounted on matching factory 18" rim.

Includes factory-custom luggage carrier and aero-profile load bars, rated 220#. Longitudinal tracks are imbedded into the roof; the locking cross-members can be positioned fore and aft easily without tools. Load bars accept T-slot or clamping sport accessories. They can be left on and still clear virtually any garage door opening. Or they can be positioned to the rear as an attractive trim spoiler or removed completely for the seasons. Best of all, when you load something on top, the Touareg will drop to the height of a normal sedan on the air positions. Note the wheel well pix showing the range of motion over the tire.

The two pix showing the 20" rims mounted are not current. Everything else was taken hours ago. Dealer serviced, full maintenance record, clean CarFax, freshly serviced and detailed, not driven since. No known mechanical defects.

For the people who want this special capability, this is a really special car.

Did I mention BEAST?

Volkswagen's new Passat Alltrack ready to scale the Alps

Thu, Feb 19 2015

Volvo may be stepping up its off-roading game with a greater variety of Cross Country models tumbling out the factory in Gothenburg, but the other (larger) European automaker whose name starts with the letters V-O-L is also broadening and updating its range of road-going automobiles equipped to handle a little soft-road duty. Aside from Audi's Allroad line, Skoda's Scout models and the new Seat Leon X-Perience, the Volkswagen brand itself has recently showcased Alltrack versions of the Golf, Multivan and of course the Passat. And now it's announced a new version of the latter for the European market. Based on the Euro-spec Passat Variant, the new VW Passat Alltrack follows a familiar formula: take a station wagon, equip it with all-wheel drive, jack up the suspension, add some lower body cladding and some new trim and – voila! – you've got a pseudo rough-roader on your hands. Set to debut in just a couple of weeks from now at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show, the new Passat Alltrack is visually distinguished by its new bumpers, underbody protection, beefed-up wheel arch moldings and a ride height increased by over an inch to the benefit of ground clearance as well as approach and departure angles. European buyers who like to leave the road every once in a while (or give the impression that they do) will be able to choose from a range of five engines: two burning gasoline with either 148 horsepower or 217, and three diesels available in 148-, 187- or 237-hp states of tune. The base TSI and TDI engines are mated to a six-speed manual, while the top three are hooked up to a six-speed DCT, but they all come with 4Motion all-wheel drive as standard. All but the base TSI model boast a towing capacity of 1,800 kg, enhanced by a Trailer Assist system that automatically lines the vehicle up to a trailer. It even comes equipped with an off-road mode that incorporates Hill Start Assist and Hill Descent Assist to make any journey across the Alps a breeze. Wolfsburg / Geneva, 19 February 2015 World premiere of the new Passat Alltrack All-wheel drive all-rounder combines the best of on-road and off-road driving - Passat Alltrack: 100 per cent 4MOTION – from 150 PS to 240 PS - Superior off-road performance with off-road mode and all-wheel drive Ten important facts about the world premiere of the Passat Alltrack: 1. Permanent 4MOTION all-wheel drive as standard. 2. Distinctive off-road look with new bumpers, underbody protection, door sill and wheel arch trims. 3.

UK auto magazine says this is the best car commercial of all time [w/videos]

Thu, 20 Dec 2012

There have been many great car commercials over the years, but is it possible to define the best? Well, Ad Week recently took a crack at it by rating the top commercials of the year by looking at their view counts on YouTube, but Auto Express took a more democratic approach by putting the decision to a vote. Just after Thanksgiving, Auto Express came up with a list of the 20 popular commercials, and it tasked its readers with choosing the winner for the best car ad of all time. The winner? Honda's 2003 commercial for its then-new European Accord titled "The Cog."
While the ad never aired in the US, most car people have surely seen the impressive Rube Goldberg-style spot. In fact, the only commercial on this list that we saw on US television was the Volkswagen ad "The Force," but many of the others have become viral videos, including transforming and dancing Citroën C4. Of the 19 other commercials that vied for the title of best ad of all time, only the Ford Puma "Steve McQueen" commercial gave Honda a run for its advertising money.
Scroll down to watch Auto Express' top five commercial in order and to check out a press release, then let us know some of your favorite car commercials in Comments.

VW modular platform strategy goes all-in on EVs

Tue, Jan 7 2014

The Volkswagen Group has already revealed or put on sale a broad slate of new electric vehicles: the E-up, the E-Golf (shown above), the Porsche 918 Spyder, the Panamera S E-Hybrid and the XL1. In 2014, there will be at least six more models, including the A3 Sportback E-Tron. And after that? Well, to hear Rudolf Krebs, Group Commissioner For Electric Vehicle Drive Systems, tell it, VW's future is full of plug-in goodness. "With our platform strategy, it is quite easy to bring a lot of electrified vehicles to the market for the different brands in a very short time," he said. "We try, with a minimum of those components, to produce a maximum number of variants of cars" That strategy starts with three platforms: MQB for small cars, MLB for midsize models and MSB for sporty and premium products (there's also the NSF for cars like the E-up). Speaking to AutoblogGreen, Krebs said VW has designed modules, things like engines and electric components (think: AC compressor, on-board chargers and battery management systems), to be used across all three platforms and across all brands all. "We try, with a minimum of those components, to produce a maximum number of variants of cars," he said. "This is only possible if, at an early stage of the design of new vehicles, we implement the idea that these cars are not only designed for gasoline and diesel powertrains but that we can also include CNG concepts, flex-fuel concepts, pure electric vehicles or plug-in hybrid vehicles. With minor changes in the body in white, we can produce those vehicles, bumper-to-bumper, in one factory." "VW wants to be the leader in the electrification of vehicles" In this way, customers can choose the powertrain that they want, or whatever powertrain their local regulations demand. Politicians have already put a lot of pressure on the automotive industry, with ever-stricter CO2 regulations coming into effect in all of the major markets. In the US, the fuel economy regulation numbers require the equivalent of 101 grams of CO2 emissions per kilometer by 2025. Europe, it's 95 grams by 2020. And China, which is asking for 118 grams by 2020, will be a tough scenario, Krebs said. Today, by optimizing conventional technologies and supporting things like CNG and biofuels, more than 300 VW Group models emit less than 120 g/km. A hundred of those are even under 100 g/km. But this is not sufficient, and VW admits that conventional powertrains will not be not enough.
