1972 VOLKSWAGEN THING CONVERTIBLE

This vehicle has been completely restored (see pictures).

It comes with new brakes, shocks, tires, paint, battery and new BOSCH starter. Speedometer shows 78.300 Kilometer (approx. 49.000 miles), 18,000 miles came from towing the car behind my motor home, that means, the engine was running only for 31,000 miles. Known as type 181, this THING was built in Germany by Volkswagen. It is powered by a 4 cylinder gas engine, with 4-speed manual transmission. The convertible soft top is new.

If you are in the market for a unique and hard to find, rust free, extremely rare and reliable vehicle, look no further than this THING. It starts on command and remains a pleasure to drive/shift on the open road or terrain.

The Bundeswehr (German Federal Army) at one time started to apply a NATO-standard three-colour Fleckenplan (camouflage scheme) to all its vehicles.
Around 1983 this standard camouflage scheme was introduced for the VW 181. Application of the camouflage (often by brush) was left to the units, but this was later stopped for environmental / health reasons. From then on VW 181s were only camouflaged when they were repaired at depot level where they could be painted with the right equipment. Only about 15% of them were camouflaged.

VW 181 Military users

The type 181's rated payload for military use was 400 kg, and being a general utility vehicle, its uses included command, patrol, dispatch and radio vehicle. Standard military equipment included an axe, headlamp blackout covers, military lighting system, map light, radio suppression, four rifle mounts, spade, starting handle, towing eye, towing hook and a wheel chock.
Largest military user was Germany :
From 1969 to 1979 the Bundeswehr (German Federal Army) procured 15,200 type 181s. They were used by all branches of the military, especially the army and the Feldj"ager (military police). Approximately 1,000 additional vehicles were delivered to governmental agencies such as the Bundesgrenzschutz (border guard), postal service, forestry department, fire brigade and civil defense/ emergency rescue units throughout the country.
Since 1981 more than 9,000 type 181s were struck off charge. The German government sold them on the open market as well as donated them to the Greek and Turkish armies. In 1992 an estimated maximum of 4,000 type 181s were still in service with the Bundeswehr. This number slowly decreases, as removal from military service is determined on repair and serviceability costs. A number of VW 181s remain in service as of 1999.

Former Audi chief designer Wolfgang Egger leaves Italdesign

Sat, Dec 27 2014

The latest word from the international community of automotive designers has it that Wolfgang Egger is leaving Italdesign, but just where the accomplished designer will land next and who will take his place remain big question marks. Egger is a designer who has bounced back and forth between Italy and Germany over the course of his career. He was born in Germany but studied in Milan. He began his career at Alfa Romeo in 1989 and was named its chief designer by 1993 before being head-hunted by the Volkswagen Group in 1998 to head up the design department at Seat. A few years later he went returned to Italy to run the Lancia design department, and was subsequently renamed to the same post at Alfa Romeo. In 2007 he went back to his native Germany to head up the Audi design office, over which he assumed complete responsibility by 2012, but left Audi in 2013 to run Italdesign. For those unfamiliar, Italdesign is the studio founded by Giorgetto Giugiaro (pictured at left next to Egger) back in 1968 but which, along with many other Italian design houses, fell on hard times in recent years. The Volkswagen Group swooped in to rescue the troubled studio in 2010, turning it into something of an in-house advanced design department to provide an alternative perspective on the direction in which the group and its various brands could take their respective designs moving forward. With Egger now leaving its helm, Italdesign and its German parent company will need to find his replacement, and we're sure they'll announce one in due course. The bigger question on our minds, however, is where Egger himself will head next. Given the path his career has taken to date, we wouldn't be surprised to see him land elsewhere in the Volkswagen Group or find a new role in the expanding Fiat Chrysler Automobiles empire. Then again, Egger could find it time to open an entirely new chapter. Watch this space. Skoda Octavia vRS is just the thing for your pumped-up neighborhood

Fri, 26 Jul 2013

Skoda, oh Skoda. You're just so cool. Maybe it's the fact that it's a brand that we don't get in these United States, but Skoda's rebadged Volkswagens, in particular the new Octavia vRS shown here, are just different enough from the hum-drum VWs on our shores that the Czech brand seems strangely desirable. Maybe we're just craving forbidden fruit.
This short, minute-long spot covers the new vRS in a world of excess, where strollers ride on 26-inch wheels, lawnmowers feature V8 engines and ice cream cones are the size of toddlers. As things often go in these ads, the Octavia vRS draws the eyes of passerby that are seemingly use to things far more ridiculous than a reasonably priced Czech sedan. In reality, the Octavia should be fairly familiar to American buyers. It uses the same 2.0-liter, turbocharged four-pot found in the Volkswagen GTI and Jetta GLI, with 217 horsepower, and sits on the same platform as the Audi A3 and Volkswagen Golf. Take a look at the full spot, below.

VW budget sub-brand stuck in limbo over VW standards, costs

Sat, 01 Mar 2014

Reports in October 2012 claimed Volkswagen had begun investigating the creation of its own budget brand. This came after having failed to purchase Malaysian car company Proton or produce a meaningful partnership with Suzuki, and after watching Renault-Nissan make piles of euro on Dacia and plot the return of Datsun.
For VW, more important than the question of what to call it was how to build it profitably and in a way that didn't damage the VW brand. According to a report in Autocar, a satisfactory answer still hasn't been found. The hurdle is how to hit "'necessary' quality and safety levels" at the price points needed to make the venture worthwhile. At the time of the 2012 report, German outlet Der Spiegel said VW was trying to get prices down to 6,000 to 8,000 euro ($7,784 to $10,379 US), about two thousand to four thousand euro under the price of the VW Up and in line with the cost of a 6,790-euro Dacia Sandero in Germany.
In March 2013, VW announced, "We want to bring a true budget car to the market in China in the foreseeable future," the most concrete move in that direction after years of planning to make a decision. Working with local Chinese maker FAW, it was predicted that the vehicle in question would appear around 2016, but as of November last year a final vote on it needed to wait until this year because "We are still working on the cost side" and profit possibilities for a car that "has to be durable, it has to be precise, it has to be safe."
