I have been told this car is a prime candidate for a tear down restore as there is minimal rust, runs great, has all the parts and is almost completely original. If you know someone that has been thinking of restoring a Thing let them know about this posting as it is tough to find one in this good of condition with all the parts and pieces.

It has always been in California. I bought this Thing from my uncle in Santa Rosa, CA about 7 years ago, it was originally sold in Berkeley, CA and original owner lived in Oakland, CA and has been in San Diego for the last 7 years. I painted the outside and put a new top on it about 5 years ago. It has never been in an accident and has minimal rust. It has has been my surf car and treated me well, but I have children now and don't have time to drive it anymore. I have the pink slip and it is currently registered. The car gets a lot of attention, thumbs up, "nice Thing" etc. Before kids my wife and I and another couple would get in with four surfboards piled up in the back seat behind the driver and cruise the beaches looking for surf. With four doors it is very roomy and comfortable fitting five people in for sight seeing or a trip to get a bite to eat.

My uncle got new side curtains which are in good condition, put in a new gas tank and fuel lines and had some suspension work done so it drives great. At 70 mph you can take your hand off the wheel and it drives straight. I just had the heater worked on and it works well, (but take that fuse out when not driving as it draws on the battery all the time for some reason). The brakes are in great condition.

Right away it needs tires, they have plenty of tread but are old and recommend you get new ones before it gets driven very far.  It runs great and I would drive it anywhere. The steering box is worn and loose as it has been ever since I bought the car. I am used to it and comfortable driving it how it is but it is ready to be replaced, CV joints are good but boots are cracked, leaks oil from the tubes under the engine as the seals are old. Rusted under the battery and needs a plate welded in but the pan is good other than that.

The pictures are meant to show you it has not been in an accident and has just surface rust. For that reason I took close ups of the worst spots so you know what you are getting into. It has sat on the street the last few years and the right side was on the downhill so if there was water to sit, it sat on the right side so it is "worst", not that it is that bad. The worst rust is under the rear door, see minimal rust on windshield and left side is not as bad as the right, front left has a small crease where someone gently bumped into me when parking. The unidentifiable picture is under the front so you can see there is just surface rust there. It is a great car that starts up every time perfectly, (the technique is to pump the gas twice and as you turn the key press on the gas and it fires up right away every time, even if it has been siting a couple of weeks).

Seats are fair, small tears in the passenger seat, back seat has wax from surf borads on it that disclored it but maybe you are better at cleaning them than I am. Only one sun visor is on the car but I have the other one, (neither are in very good shape). All doors open and close well. The air hose coming out of the top of the engine has tape on it and has ever since I got it.

I have the original owners manual, a parts manual, a service manual and some original marketing material.

You will need to figure out transportation. I drilled holes in the front bumper and bolted a tow bar on to tow it from Santa Rosa when I bought it but I do not have a truck anymore. If you are close to San Diego I can drive it to you. Call me if you have questions 8am to 6pm California time.

Germans, Brits and Ferrari's new V12 SUV | Autoblog Podcast #748

Fri, Sep 23 2022

In this episode of the Autoblog Podcast, Editor-in-Chief Greg Migliore is joined by Associate Editor Byron Hurd. With the Detroit Auto Show now in the rearview, focus shifts to news that crept up outside of the North American spotlight. The two talk about the new Ferrari Purosangue SUV, then pivot to a discussion about the future of the Dodge Charger and Challenger based on rumors of a new assembly facility. Next, they discuss what they've been driving recently. Byron leads off with anecdotes from his trip to Spain to drive the 2023 Range Rover Sport and his weekend with the VW GTI SE. Next, Greg talks about the ups and downs of the BMW X3 M Competition and Mercedes-Benz GLE450 Coupe. After that, they spend your money; this week's is a whopper.   Send us your questions for the Mailbag and Spend My Money at: Podcast@Autoblog.com. Ex-Fiat exec: VW diesel scandal will hurt plug-in hybrids

Thu, Apr 7 2016

It doesn't sound right at first blush, but former Fiat executive and noted diesel-powertrain expert Rinaldo Rinolfi thinks that plug-in hybrid sales may be more impacted by the VW diesel-emissions scandal than diesel sales. Rinolfi, who worked for Fiat for 40 years, told Automotive News Europe, said that the Euro 6 emissions rules that went into effect in 2015 have already increased diesel-engine production costs enough to raise prices and ultimately flatten demand. By the end of the decade, diesel-vehicle sales will settle in at a 40-percent market share of new European vehicles, and that was going to happen with or without the scandal. "Every carmaker has found ways to achieve fuel consumption and emissions results that have progressively diverged from the real driving conditions." - Rinaldo Rinolfi Makers of plug-in hybrids have more to lose, though, because every PHEV maker has figured out a way to keep emissions figures artificially low, Rinolfi said. Under New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) standards, PHEVs can be tested part of the time with the electric motor in action, meaning emissions get driven down to 30 percent to 40 percent less than real-world figures. With the VW scandal pushing regulators to use real-world figures, those PHEV emissions numbers are expected to rise substantially. To a lesser extent, hybrid emissions figures are also tested as artificially low. "Over the years, even without defeat devices, every carmaker has found ways to achieve fuel consumption and emissions results that have progressively diverged from the real driving conditions the customer experiences," Rinolfi said in the Automotive News Europe interview. Rinolfi is a little sunnier about compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles, estimating that CNG emissions are as much as 25 percent lower compared to conventional vehicles. As for battery-electrics, he's not so optimistic, estimating that there needs to be at least a tenfold improvement in energy efficiency for EVs to be truly competitive with conventional vehicles. "I've been waiting for a true breakthrough for the past 25 years, but I've not seen it yet," Rinolfi said about EVs in the Automotive News Europe interview. VW invests in QuantumScape for potentially fireproof, long-range EV batteries

Mon, Dec 8 2014

VW might be getting ready to push its plug-in technology in a big way thanks to an investment in the battery startup QuantumScape. Key point: the solid-state battery is said to be fireproof and will offer tremendous range advantages. Details are not abundant yet, but according to Bloomberg, VW of America bought a five-percent stake in QuantumScape (and has an option to raise its holding). The tech could "more than triple" the EV range of VW, Porsche and Audi plug-in vehicles as soon as the middle of 2015, according to unnamed sources that Bloomberg talked to. Former Stanford University researchers started QuantumScape in 2010. The bare-bones QuantumScape website (there's nothing there other than some contact information) doesn't offer many hints about what's happening at the company, but GigaOM's Katie Fehrenbacher notes that QuantumScape is licensing tech from the "All Electron Battery" project at Stanford a few years ago. It certainly sounds amazing: [It's] a completely new class of electrical energy storage devices for electric vehicles that has the potential to provide ultra-high energy and power densities, while enabling extremely high cycle life. The All-Electron Battery stores energy by moving electrons, rather than ions, and uses electron/hole redox instead of capacitive polarization of a double-layer. ... If successful, this project will develop a completely new paradigm in energy storage for electrified vehicles that could revolutionize the electric vehicle industry. If that's what's coming in a future e-Golf or E-Tron, sign us up.
