Try life in the slow lane!  You are bidding on a solid '83 Diesel Rabbit. It is a little tattered, but a great running little car - my daily commuter. I've had it about 2 years and drive it everywhere; most recently, Ann Arbor to St. Louis (yes, and back!).  Selling because we are moving and spouse demands that we thin the fleet.

The Good: Last tank of diesel got 44 mpg with 70 mph commuter driving. Mileage ranges from 40-48 depending on how much time your right foot spends on the floor. Shock towers and floor pan are solid. Block heater works, but I never needed it. Clutch grabs well and 5 speed shifts nice. Car comes with a new set of glow plugs, Bentley manual and the usual assortment of odd parts. Basic mechanicals are about as good as they get for a 30 year old car. Heck, most have been replaced! Things repaired/replaced in the past 2 years:

- Exhaust pipe, muffler and tailpipe

- Rear brakes and cylinders

- Front brake pads and calipers

- Front and rear struts

- Control arm bushings

- Battery

- Shift linkage bushings

- Parking brake cables

- Clutch cable

- All filters

- The usual consumables

The not so good:

-The car started life loaded. Power steering, air conditioning and cruise control - none of them work. There may be hope for the air  - the system still has pressure.

- When I bought the car the floorboards were solid, but carpet was soaked from sunroof leakage. I pulled it all out, thoroughly dried it before reassembly. Gave up on the sun roof and caulked it shut.

- Headliner is all there but tattered in the back from sunroof leakage.

- Radio & speakers are sketchy. Keep it on news talk stations and you'll be OK

- The usual Rabbit rust around the edges . It took a minor hit on the driver's front and you can see where there has been fender/door interference at one time

Porsche engine wizard Wolfgang Hatz resigns

Tue, May 3 2016

Wolfganag Hatz has resigned from his position as Member of the Porsche Executive Board with responsibility for Research and Development. He has held that title since 2011. Hatz's storied career came to an abrupt end in September when he was suspended pending investigation into the Volkswagen diesel scandal. Before the Porsche job, Hatz was the head of engine and powertrain development for the Volkswagen Group. It has been alleged that he is at the center of the investigation into the company cheating on emissions testing, but so far there has been no direct link made to him, according to Porsche's announcement today. Hatz has worked at a variety of European automakers, including Audi, BMW, Opel, and Fiat. He is considered the father of the BMW S14 engine, which powered the E30 M3, and also developed the Porsche 911 Carrera RS 3.8. He was also very involved in Porsche's motorsports efforts, including the recent return to the prototype class and a short-lived F1 V12 engine project. Ulrich Hackenberg, most recently VW's lead engineer and a board member at Audi, was also suspended at the same time as Hatz and resigned shortly thereafter. It's not clear why Hatz waited so long to do the same, but Porsche claims his resignation was voluntary. Michael Steiner has been named Hatz's replacement as head of Porsche R&D. Steiner has been with Porsche since 2002 and seems like a forward-thinking sort, having headed the innovation and concepts division, lead Panamera development, and, most recently, been in charge of complete vehicle engineering. Prior to his time at Porsche, Steiner held positions at Daimler. The change in leadership is effective immediately. Related Video:

Everyone but VW and Tesla has recalled their Takata airbags

Thu, Aug 20 2015

Takata's massive airbag inflator recall affected over 32 million vehicles from 11 automakers in the US, but two companies buying the supplier's parts haven't been affected so far: Volkswagen and Tesla. There are 887,055 VWs and 184,926 Teslas using Takata's inflators with ammonium-nitrate propellant, a new accounting shows, according to Automotive News. That doesn't necessarily mean the models need to be recalled. These figures came from a report that Takata prepared for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which listed all of the vehicles it supplied with ammonium nitrate-fueled inflators. The substance is believed to be linked with the components' rupturing, along with manufacturing defects and humidity. "We're not asking because we've got reports of problems; we just need to figure out what the universe is," NHTSA spokesman Gordon Trowbridge said to Automotive News. Takata reportedly told Tesla that the inflators in its EVs are not affected with these problems, and VW is investigating a case in June where a side airbag allegedly burst in a 2015 Tiguan, Automotive News reports. The government is also still researching the precise cause of the parts' ruptures. If the investigation finds ammonium nitrate to be a factor, the vehicles could need recalled. During a Congressional hearing Takata vice president Kevin Kennedy admitted that ammonium nitrate could be among the factors of the ruptures, but the company has continued to use the chemical in its inflators. Takata is now working to transition to a different propellant. Related Video:

VW midsize crossover production headed for Chattanooga

Fri, 10 Jan 2014

Potential labor woes aside, it looks like Volkswagen's Chattanooga, TN factory must have done something that impressed the bosses in Germany, because it sounds like the three-year-old factory is set to score a second model.
The factory currently builds the Passat, and has been in the running alongside VW's Puebla, Mexico factory to build a new crossover vehicle, likely based on the CrossBlue Concept. According to Bloomberg, a pair of unnamed sources have confirmed that Chattanooga is the favorite ahead of an official announcement.
When last we heard about the CrossBlue Concept, word was that a production decision had been delayed over concerns about the three-row CUV's business case. That August 2013 story claimed that a decision regarding the CrossBlue would be pushed back until early in 2014, which means we're ripe for some sort of news, whether good or bad.
