Up for auction is a 1982 VW Diesel Pickup.  This is a project that I started three years ago.  Unfortunately I  was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer in 2011 and the cancer is getting worse.  The doctors haven't given me much more time to live, so it's time for me to sell my baby.

I am a certified VW technician that actually worked on the trucks at the VW dealership back when they were selling these trucks.

Listed below are the things that I have replace:

The truck's floor boards were rusted out, so I welded in new metal and fiber glassed over top the top of the complete floor boards.

There were several other common rust spots that I repaired.  I used POR rust preventative paint in all of the areas that the rust was repaired.  You can Google POR to acquire more information.

New deflector headlights were installed along with HID kits.

The engine was replaced with a later model engine with less that 90,000 miles.  I have a friend that removed this engine from a later model Jetta many years ago.  It was in storage for many years until after two years of bugging him to sell it to me, he finally did sell it to me.

Replaced ALL external engine seals in the engine along with the timing belt and drive belts.

Installed a remanufactured injection pump.

Clutch kit.

Installed a new stainless header along with a complete custom 2 1/2" exhaust system.

My next project was going to be installing a turbo kit.  The new turbo kit goes with the truck.  See pictures.

Installed an electric vacuum pump from a late model Audi.  Everyone that has an early model VW diesel knows that the factory mechanical pumps are awful.

All CV Boots.

ALL shifter bushings and linkage rods.

Front brake pads, caliper bushings, ball joints, wheel bearings, transmission external seals, front strut inserts, strut bearing tops.

Rear shoes, wheel cylinders, parking brake cable, wheel bearings, shocks.

Replaced front windshield and seal, rear window seal, early style GTI steering wheel, custom fitted later model center console and late model seat belts.

New custom racing seats, new carpet, new leather shift knob, interior was dyed black, The dash has not been cut up and still uses the old knob style radio.  JVC A/M F/M Cassette radio.  New speakers.

Heater blower motor and resister.  Still has the factory  R-12 A/C system that works great.

Things that the truck still needs:

I left the original body trim holes, so I was still looking for the factory body trim that goes from the front fender to the rear finder.

Rust has started back on the right rear fender behind the wheel (see pictures).

Turbo kit needs to be installed.  Comes with a new boost gauge.  The electric brake booster pump is currently mounted on the firewall and is a little noisy.  It needs to be mounted somewhere else near the front (maybe on the transmission).

The trucks runs great and gets compliments from people every tme I drive it.  Anyone that is local is welcome to come test drive it.  Just contact me mhemrick@triad.rr.com

The vehicle is also being sold locally and the seller has the right to end or cancel the auction at any time.

Volkswagen planning Up! hybrid model using XL1 powertrain

Sun, 24 Feb 2013

Even though we've finally gotten a look at the production version of the 261-mile per gallon Volkswagen XL1, this aero-shaped two-seater was never intended for high-volume sales. Fortunately, it sounds like the same isn't true for the car's diesel plug-in hybrid powertrain, which, according to a report from AutoCar, could make its way under the hood of another Volkswagen model: the Up! minicar (shown above).
A potential Up! Hybrid would likely be able to return some of the same impressive fuel economy numbers as the XL1, but it would be a more realistic car with more passenger space and greater production capacity. The hand-built XL1 will use a 47-horsepower, two-cylinder TDI engine paired to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, and the 27-hp electric motor and lithium-ion battery helps deliver an all-electric driving range of 31 miles.
One of the core pillars of the XL1's design is its lightweight construction with a 1752-pound curb weight, which makes the Up! a perfect recipient for using this powertrain since it weighs just 300 pounds more. The report says that the Up! Hybrid is still in the developmental phase, so a production version isn't expected for at least another 18 months.

Tesla tires turning on Stretchla Vanagon EV conversion project

Tue, Jan 7 2014

It is one thing to say you are going to Frankenstein a Tesla Model S with a pair of Siamese-twinned Volkswagen Vanagons and quite another to actually start taking your newly-acquired, smashed-up electric sedan apart in an effort to bring it back to life. Otmar Ebenhoech is doing just that, and having no small successes along the way. The Stretchla project, as it is being called, has officially started and our protagonist has put together another bit of video to document his progress and let us know about some of the different challenges he's encountered and conquered. While our original post about this endeavor featured video of the stretched Vanagon's drivetrain removal, this latest installment focuses on the Model S. Otmar received the Tesla in less-than-operable condition. Otmar received the Tesla in less-than-operable condition and has been tackling some of the basic problems one might expect to encounter: lots of error messages and an electrically disconnected battery pack. Without the aid of a manual or technical diagrams, he's removed the battery pack and discovered why it wasn't sending power to the car. Scroll below to watch the ten-minute presentation and celebrate some initial victories. You can also check out the official Stretchla blog for more photos and updates, including the most recent one that discusses how he talked himself into paying (*spoiler alert) $42,000 for a wrecked, non-functional electric car, along with more recent struggles with the steering rack. Hit us up in the comments to let us know what kind of trouble you would get into with a Model S drivetrain of your own. This content is hosted by a third party.
