1981 Vw Pick Up With 1.9l Turbo Diesel (caddy) 5spd on 2040-cars
United States
I had this VW diesel pick up built for me in Washington where these trucks and parts are very well known and desirable. It took many months to build and was finished in October 2012. I had a rust-free (minor surface rust) original 1.6 diesel for a starter truck. Had it disassembled and painted. I got a 1.9 turbo diesel motor and had it rebuilt. This included a new timing belt, water pump and pulley tensioners. The motor with delivery was $2700. I then spent another $1600 on the rebuild . The injection pump was not to my liking, so I bought a NEW one (not rebuilt). I had the transmission pulled. It looked good so just had it resealed with a new clutch. Brakes were all rebuilt along with the axle bearings. New struts and shocks. New exhaust from the down tube to rear. I had the steering rack rebuilt and the truck goes down the road nice and straight with no shakes rattles or squeaks. I then had the interior pulled out and had a later model VW gulf interior put in. To include door dash-board, door panels and the leather seats. Had a carpet kit put in along with a new headliner. I also had new door and window rubber installed. Steering wheel from a Scirocco. This is an LX model. It also has the slider rear window. The rear bed- cap comes with it and is in very good condition. The sliding windows work well along with the air-piston operated rear door. The truck over all is in very very good condition. It does not leak, drip or burn any oil. It starts up easily with fast-warming glow plugs. drives and brakes very well. Brakes 80/90 %, Tires about 70 % ?. I also did a clean install with remote power door locks.
The few things the vehicle needs if I were keeping it: 1) Temperature gauge stopped working ? 2) Turbo boost gauge is pegged (bad ground) 3) Small ding on passenger door (barley noticeable- see picture) paint-less dent repair will take care of it. 4) There is some minor wear on the drivers-seat outside bolster. Very minor (see pictures) (remember this is an old model interior). 5) small dent on front skirt under the front on the passenger side. This did not bother me enough the fix it (see pictures of front of car) I put about 8k miles on this car since the build. I have 3 cars and need to sell one of my toys. I have more then 13K into this one. gfriedman63@gmail.com email me your phone number for any questions |

Volkswagen completes design work on new EV platform
Tue, Jan 10 2017Volkswagen has completed the design work for its modular, MEB platform that's geared specifically for electric-vehicle production, Automotive News Europe says, citing comments Volkswagen development head Frank Welsch made at CES in Las Vegas last week. Additionally, VW's Skoda and Seat divisions may use that platform for their own plug-in vehicle models. VW's Audi division is also considering employing the platform, though adoption by Volkswagen's Porsche unit is unlikely. VW expects to start selling its first model specifically designed as an EV (i.e., not converted from existing conventional models such as the Golf and Up!) by 2020. Welsch added that the MEB platform may be used as a base for updated electrified versions of Golf, Tiguan, and Passat. Meanwhile, Skoda will debut as many as five plug-in models by 2025. Europe's largest automaker is looking to further distance itself from the 2015 scandal that involved software that cheats diesel-emissions testing efforts and has cost the company more than $15 billion in US settlements alone. All told, VW and its divisions expect to debut as many as 30 plug-in vehicle models within the next decade. Volkswagen unveiled its I.D. concept vehicle, which is based on the MEB platform and looks somewhat like the BMW i3 electric-vehicle model, at last year's Paris Motor Show. VW said at the time that the vehicle could go as far as 373 miles on a single charge. Additionally, VW will show off an electric SUV concept model at this year's Shanghai Auto Show, and is unveiling a microbus version of the I.D. concept at the Detroit Auto Show this month. Next Volkswagen Golf R to get 286 horsepower?
Tue, 12 Feb 2013The seventh-generation Volkswagen Golf hasn't launched in the United States just yet, but we're already setting our sights on the range-topping R model. According to Autocar, the next Golf R will be more powerful than the current version, producing 268 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque, making it the most powerful production Golf ever.
Powering the new Golf R will be a further evolution of Volkswagen's well-liked 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four, and when mated to a six-speed dual-clutch transmission, the hotter hatch will reportedly be able to sprint to 62 miles per hour in five seconds flat. That's over half a second quicker than the current US-spec model.
Other updates for the new Golf R include the addition of VW's Haldex 5 all-wheel-drive system found in the latest iteration of 4Motion. Furthermore, thanks to the use of lightweight materials, the new R is expected to weigh in around 2,650 pounds - that's a massive 675 pounds less than the current US-spec car. The exhaust has reportedly been reworked to provide more aural delight, as well.
VW to relax ambitious US sales targets?
Fri, 16 May 2014The Volkswagen brand sold 407,704 cars last year, a 6.95-percent decline compared to 2012, and it's down a further 8.36 percent through the end of April 2014 compared to this time last year. In order to to put the sales football between its Strategy 2018 goal posts, the brand would need to add 100,000 more sales every year to achieve the lofty 800,000-unit target. Coming to grips with how unreasonable that is, VW US CEO Michael Horn has said, "For now, we have to have realistic targets."
The reasons for the brand's slow-down are imprecise, but lots of folks are throwing lots of reasons around. Last November, VW Group Chairman Ferdinand Piech told Bloomberg, "We understand Europe, we understand China and we understand Brazil, [but] we only understand the US to a certain degree so far." Analysts say the brand hasn't had midsize and compact SUV offerings, especially an overdue retail version of the CrossBlue, and the ones it does have are priced too high for their segments. It "didn't introduce enough new engines, or alternative technologies or model variants" for the Passat and Jetta. It devoted so many resources to China that the US market suffered. It was being outspent two-to-one on advertising by competitors. Its J.D. Power dependability ratings aren't high enough to overcome its past. It "has never really taken the US customer seriously." And so on.
There's still no official admission of defeat concerning the target, but reading between the lines there are some VW execs that appear to accept it won't happen short of some deus ex machina. Still,
