1979 Vw Rabbit Diesel 2dr 42mpg Made In Germany Great Daily Driver All Original on 2040-cars
Browns Summit, North Carolina, United States
This is an original unmolested 1979 Rabbit Diesel C. A southern car I have every reason to believe it has spent it's entire life in the Greensboro, NC area. I have owned the car for about a year and a half now. I drive it back and forth to work daily and have taken it on several medium range trips , the longest was to Syracuse, NY and back last Christmas. It averages about 42 mpg, has started right away every time except for one 10 degree morning in January when the tank was low. Even then after trying for about 10 minutes and leaving it set about 20 and trying it again it started. The interior is in very good shape with the exception of driver's seat wear and a cracked dash. The previous owner added a three gauge setup out of a cabriolet which works nicely. Still has the orignal 1.5 L motor and original first year 5spd trans. I bought the car never intending to repaint it which it really needs, I only treated surface rust with brush applied rust preventive epoxy. Has the usual Rabbit rust at the bottom of the rear wheel wells nothing major. Strut towers all solid, needs new strut inserts though. Some denting on the passenger side roof above the door. Engine has an oil leak on the pulley side, if you drive it on the highway long distances it hardly loses any oil, but around town travel during the week usually requires a top off of oil by the end of the week. Only reason for selling found a Diesel Jetta it would like to own instead. Being a 1979 and therefore 35 years old this car requires no inspection at all in NC. Feel free to ask me any questions about the car. The car is for sale locally and I reserve the right to cancel bids and end the auction at any time.

CEO says Volkswagen's buying spree is over
Mon, 03 Sep 2012
After adding Italian motorcycle icon Ducati to its stable and spending $5.6 billion on the rest of Porsche, Volkswagen CEO Martin Winterkorn says he's done shopping for a while.
"We have enough to do at the moment in taking our twelve brands to where we want to be," Winterkorn tells German newspaper Handelsblatt.
Happy 60th to the VW Karmann Ghia
Tue, 20 Aug 2013Volkswagen's product portfolio may be as extensive these days as any other carmaker in the business. But if you still think of the original Beetle as synonymous with the brand, that's probably because a) you're old and b) the Beetle was the company's only product until the mid-50s.
Sixty years ago Wilhelm Karmann (founder of the eponymous coachbuilder) was in Paris for the auto salon and met up with Luigi Segre and his team from Carrozzeria Ghia who showed him what was essentially a "Beetle in a sports coat." A month later they showed it to Volkswagen chief Heinrich Nordhoff who, setting aside his conservative tastes, approved it for production. And so the Volkswagen Karmann Ghia was born, giving the German marque a second product line. It still used Beetle mechanicals and was built at the same Karmann factory in Onsabrück that was already assembling the Beetle Cabriolet.
It took another couple of years to put the design into production, but from 1955 to 1974, Volkswagen and Karmann built 362,601 coupes and 80,881 of the subsequent convertible that arrived in 1957. Today the Onsabrück factory is part of the VW Group, handling production of the Golf Cabriolet, XL1 and Porsche Boxster and Cayman, and with that original Karmann Ghia prototype as part of its factory collection.
UAW tactics called into question at VW's TN plant
Thu, 26 Sep 2013The United Auto Workers is in hot water with some of the very workers it is trying to unionize at Volkswagen's Chattanooga assembly plant. According to The Tennessean, eight Volkswagen factory workers have filed complaints against the UAW with the National Labor Relations Board, claiming the union "misled or coerced" them into formally asking for union representation.
The UAW has instituted a major push at the Chattanooga plant to represent the 2,500 hourly laborers that build the VW Passat by using what's called a card-check process. The tactic is opposed by the National Right to Work Legal Defense foundation, the group representing the workers. The card-check process demands that a company recognize a union that obtains the signatures of more than half its workforce, according to The Tennessean. This tactic is in contrast to the more traditional route, which sees employees vote on union representation.
The workers filing the complaint claim that the UAW told them the cards merely called for a secret ballot, rather than an outright demand for union representation. Workers also allege that the UAW has made it overly difficult to reclaim their signed cards, some of which were signed so long ago that they have been rendered invalid. Although the cards can force a company's hand, federal law still allows the company to ask for a secret ballot before yielding to unionized workers.
