2005 GL TDI

181,000 Miles
Recent additions:
-4 Brand new Michelin Primacy Tires (over $500)
-Rebuilt front end, all new control arms, etc.
-All four new shocks/struts
-Changed oil, fuel filter, air filter, cabin filter, in the last 500miles.
- changed Thermostat, thermostat housing, coolant sensor and a hose in the back of the engine. (we had a small coolant leak and I went overboard in fixing it, no leaks now tho!)

At 130,000miles we had a ton of work done on the car,
-Water Pump, timing belt, alternator pulleys, etc
He also Installed the BHW Balance shaft retrofit kit (so no annoying chain, just gear to gear).  This costs several thousand dollars but fixes a design flaw of this car.  Not doing this repair, often results in engine damage.
-I also had a small leak in the EGR cooler at this time so I bypassed it. This does not effect the operation of the car, but you get a little emissions warning light.
-Had the RocketChip installed at this time. This was an awesome upgrade and makes the car MUCH more fun to drive.  No worries about accelerating onto a highway, plenty of passing power.
-Installed updated Steel glowplugs.

We literally have a book full of all the things we've done to the car in the last 4 years.
I have always used the proper VW spec oil, coolant, and all other fluids, so no worries there.

The things that need to be addressed as they are not perfect:
-CV joints need to be done sometime in the near future as they are just starting to click on hard turns.
-Car door locks are starting to act funny with the key fob or sometimes with the switch on the door. I've heard this is a common problem but have not looked into it yet.  Doors and rear hatch all function perfectly when used with the key (manually).
-Small piece of trim (1 inch) is broken by the rear driveside door.  We looked into replacing it as it is a fairly common and thus cheap to fix issue, but honestly it never bothered us enough to worry about.

Otherwise, the car is a 2005. It has been used. Minor scuffs from usage. So expect what you would expect from an 8 year old car that has 181,000 miles.
I am aware of no mechanical defects other than what I have outlined above, I would trust driving it to wherever it needs to be driven.
This VW is very good for long road trips.  Has 12V connections in the back of the car which we used for a cooler, is comfortable to drive long distances with, and gets good fuel economy.  Fuel usage from the factory is stated as 24 city 37 highway.  We kept a logbook where we manually entered fuel economy.  On long road trips I could break 40mpg, in town only we never actually got below 29mpg.  I would expect an average of 34 or so real world MPG.  This isn't as high as a Golf or Jetta, but the car is so much more comfortable and it feels much more stable at highway speeds.

Reason I'm selling it? Simple. We recently got into restoring an old camper with the idea of doing a lot more traveling and camping before the kids get too old. Can the VW tow it? Perhaps, but the wife and I would feel more comfortable doing it in a larger vehicle. So we got a Ford Explorer that will be better suited to that duty.  Sure going to miss our zippy little car and great fuel economy tho :P

Last two pictures are the small damage.  Last one is a scratch in the surface of the paint.  It is hard to see but I wanted to show it.  Second to last picture is where that piece of trim is missing.

Thanks for looking!
Drew

VW invests in QuantumScape for potentially fireproof, long-range EV batteries

Mon, Dec 8 2014

VW might be getting ready to push its plug-in technology in a big way thanks to an investment in the battery startup QuantumScape. Key point: the solid-state battery is said to be fireproof and will offer tremendous range advantages. Details are not abundant yet, but according to Bloomberg, VW of America bought a five-percent stake in QuantumScape (and has an option to raise its holding). The tech could "more than triple" the EV range of VW, Porsche and Audi plug-in vehicles as soon as the middle of 2015, according to unnamed sources that Bloomberg talked to. Former Stanford University researchers started QuantumScape in 2010. The bare-bones QuantumScape website (there's nothing there other than some contact information) doesn't offer many hints about what's happening at the company, but GigaOM's Katie Fehrenbacher notes that QuantumScape is licensing tech from the "All Electron Battery" project at Stanford a few years ago. It certainly sounds amazing: [It's] a completely new class of electrical energy storage devices for electric vehicles that has the potential to provide ultra-high energy and power densities, while enabling extremely high cycle life. The All-Electron Battery stores energy by moving electrons, rather than ions, and uses electron/hole redox instead of capacitive polarization of a double-layer. ... If successful, this project will develop a completely new paradigm in energy storage for electrified vehicles that could revolutionize the electric vehicle industry. If that's what's coming in a future e-Golf or E-Tron, sign us up.

Recharge Wrap-up: 2015 Fuel Economy Guide available, how Porsche ships 919 Hybrid

Fri, Nov 7 2014

The EPA and Department of Energy have released the 2015 Fuel Economy Guide. Unsurprisingly, the groups say that this year features more fuel efficient and low-emissions vehicles than previous years, and they span a greater variety of vehicle types. The guide also provides "best-in-class" lists, greenhouse gas ratings and estimated fuel costs for each vehicle. The EPA and DOE hope that car buyers will use the guide to help choose cars that are better for the environment and the climate. Check out the guide for yourself or read more in the press release below. To get from one WEC race to the next, Porsche ships its 919 Hybrid LMP1 cars by air. As the team travels around the world - from continent to continent - it must take 35 tons worth of cargo with it, including two LMP1 cars. That means draining fluids, partially dismantling the cars, and fitting everything into a 747. The team also ships items by sea, which requires shipping extra sets of items due to the longer shipping times. "It's all about efficiency," according to Porsche. The A4000i, which features smartphone connectivity, will be the company's European flagship model. Terra Motors will begin selling in Italy, and plans to make arrangements to sell in several more countries shortly after. Terra hopes to set up manufacturing in Europe, as well. Also on display at EICMA is the company's Bizmo II electric scooter, which has a driving range of 93 miles on a single charge. Read more in the press release below. Volkswagen is providing a 2015 e-Golf to Stanford University for research. The car will be used to study electric mobility, improvements in the driving experience and people's driving behavior and attitudes toward EVs. "Volkswagen's longstanding relationship with Stanford has allowed us to push the boundaries of automotive research and innovation," says Volkswagen's Ewald Goessmann, "and we look forward to extending our work together to drive advances in electric vehicles." Chrysler and Fiat offering $1,000 rebates to VW owners as Marchionne gets tough

Mon, 10 Dec 2012

The throw-down between Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne and Volkswagen has heated up in earnest. According to Bloomberg, Fiat and Chrysler are now offering current Volkswagen owners in the US $1,000 rebates to trade in their ride. It's the latest in a series of shots Marchionne has taken at his German rival. As you may recall, the Fiat executive entered into a spat with Volkwagen board chairman Ferdinand Piëch and CEO Martin Winterkorn in October after the duo called for Marchionne's resignation from presidency of the European Automotive Manufacturers Association (AECA). At the time, the Volkswagen executives were quoted as saying Fiat would not survive the European economic downturn.
In response, Marchionne called the German executives "reprehensible," and accused Volkswagen of using a pricing strategy that has created created a "bloodbath" in the EU. Volkswagen has taken to steep discounting to carve out ever-larger slices of market share in Europe, but the company has a much smaller foothold in the US. Marchionne may be trying to hit Volkswagen where the manufacturer is weakest with the new Fiat new incentive program.
Late last week, the Fiat executive was voted to a second term as ACEA president.
