KNOWN ANOMALIES/REQUIRED MAINTENANCE

-Light nicks/scrapes to paint (though less than you might expect for 125,000 miles driven)
-Brakes will require service in approx 15,000 mi
-Tires will require replacement in approx 30,000 mi
-Muffler requires replacement (first-stage oxygen sensor for the exhaust system also requires replacement and currently is causing a 'check engine' light)
-Valve cover gasket and cam adjuster seal may require replacement
-Homelink garage door open/close panel has come loose from visor requires replacement

In my opinion, overall, this is a "good condition" vehicle, especially when considering the mileage.  It has been fantastic for me and a pleasure to drive.  I have been the sole owner and I assure all interested parties there have been no accidents.  Also, if you are familiar with 2002 Passats, you'll be happy to know this vehicle has been fully serviced with all VW recommended maintenance thru 100k miles including timing belt replacement and cooling pump replacement.  Currently, the exhaust sounds a little louder than usual, suggesting a new muffler is required.  Also, the dash shows a "check engine" light which has been identified by VW Service as requiring a first-stage oxygen sensor replacement.  I am including the oxygen sensor part, however, I currently live too far from a dealership/service center to reasonably submit the vehicle for service.  Therefore, cost of parts and labor for replacing the muffler, and labor for replacing the sensor, will be the responsibility of the auction winner.  VW also recommends replacing the valve cover gasket and cam adjuster seal to resolve a minor oil leak. I am not including parts for this as, in my opinion, the leak is too minor to require maintenance.  Cost of parts and service for replacement of the valve cover gasket and cam adjuster seal will be at the discretion of, and at the expense of, the auction winner.  I estimate the brakes will need servicing in the next 15k miles.  The tires are mid-life with another 30k miles of expected use under normal driving conditions.  Finally, the Homelink panel for garage door opening/closing has come loose from the visor and requires replacement.  I have always used a separate system, but if you like or need to use Homelink you may want to consider this.  I do not have estimated costs for any of the above.  I have made every effort to fully disclose any issues with this vehicle.  I think if you are looking for a good, reliable vehicle for a low price, this will be perfect for you.  Please consider this vehicle for auction AS IS.  There is no warranty, expressed or implied.  Now you know everything I know about this awesome little sedan, except for what it's like to drive... I hope you get to find out.  Good luck on your bid!

Ten of the greatest Super Bowl car commercials of all time

Thu, Jan 28 2016

With an average of over 100 million viewers each year, the Super Bowl always has advertisers bringing out the big guns. And for those among us who don't know the difference between a safety and a touchback, those commercials can be one of the most compelling aspects of the annual ritual. Car companies, in particular, have a long history of making the most of the huge Super Bowl audience by debuting some of the most memorable advertisements that have ever aired on television. So, in preparation for the new batch we'll be seeing this coming Sunday, here's a collection of our favorites from the past. 10. Audi – The Godfather When Audi created this homage to the quintessential gangster movie to promote its newest sports car, the company managed to make a commercial that was simultaneously funny, a little bit disturbing, and most importantly memorable. 9. Maserati – Strike This one might start out slow, but it delivers not only with the wicked sound of the third-generation Ghibli's engine, but with an interesting message about hubris in the auto industry as well. 8. Nissan 300ZX Twin-Turbo – Dream Directed by none other than Ridley Scott (Blade Runner, Alien), this dystopian spot has centers around a narrator who explains that in his dream the bad guys are unable to catch him despite their best efforts by way of street bikes, race cars, and supersonic jets. While the twin-turbocharged 300ZX car was certainly a performance powerhouse to be reckoned with in its day, the concept and execution of this one does come off a little bit campy now – but in a good way. Then again, it is a dream, after all. 7. General Motors – Robot This one is unique in that it's genuinely depressing on a profound level. Who would've thought that the simulated suicide of a lovable, anthropomorphic car-building robot who has fallen on hard times could be such a downer? 6. Nissan – With Dad Although the debut season of its new LMP1 racer didn't exactly turn out how the team hoped it would, there's no denying that Nissan's depiction of a strained father-and-son relationship that eventually leads to redemption (and the introduction of the 2016 Maxima) tugs at the heartstrings. 5. Volkswagen – Big Day A surprisingly poignant advert, this one might be low on dialogue but it certainly gets its message across. And just as the dramatic soundtrack begins to lull the viewer into a sense of security, our expectations are upended. 4.

Volkswagen Golf Variant will make a lovely Jetta SportWagen

Tue, 05 Mar 2013

In addition to several other versions of the Golf, Volkswagen is debuting the new Golf Variant (read: wagon) here at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show. And if this bigger version of the Golf looks like it might fit right at home in the States, it's because we could possibly see some version of this car as the next-generation Jetta SportWagen here on our shores.
Volkswagen is debuting the Golf Variant with two efficient diesel engines, rated at 110 and 150 horsepower, the smaller of which is good for an impressive 71.3 miles per gallon on the European cycle (when mated to a six-speed manual transmission). The Golf Variant also gets a version of Volkswagen's 4Motion all-wheel-drive system, making it incredibly all-weather capable.
It's a handsome estate, and it wears the new Golf's design language well. We can't say for sure if this car will actually make its way Stateside, but given the fact that the current Jetta SportWagen still rides on the old Golf platform, the odds look to be in our favor.

Volkswagen officially grants access to UAW in Tennessee

Tue, Dec 9 2014

An audit at the Volkswagen factory in Chattanooga, TN has revealed that at least 45 percent of the facility's workers support unionization, leading the German company to grant access rights to the United Auto Workers. This is a tremendous step in the UAW's long-running and at times contentious pursuit of the workforce at Chattanooga. With this latest move, "local leadership is ready to move forward with additional conversations with the company," the union said in a statement obtained by The Detroit News. "As a starting point, UAW Local 42 will take advantage of the company's offer to establish bi-weekly meetings with Volkswagen Human Resources and the Volkswagen Chattanooga Executive Committee." The News reports that UAW Secretary-Treasurer Gary Casteel, shown above speaking at the Chattanooga plant last summer, claimed these meetings "will remind Human Resources and the Chattanooga Executive Committee of the mutually agreed-upon commitments that were made by Volkswagen and the UAW last spring in Germany. Among those commitments: Volkswagen will recognize the UAW as the representative of our members. We believe Volkswagen made this commitment in good faith and we believe the company will honor this commitment." It's important to note that despite Casteel's remarks, this is not a collective-bargaining agreement, Harley Shaiken, a labor professor at University of California, Berkeley, told The News. "But it is a step in the direction of recognition, which ultimately could lead to collective bargaining. This is not the end point," Shaiken said. "We don't know what's next. We're in unchartered territory."
