1996 VW Passat TDI

(Turbocharged Direct Injection)
Currently 197k miles - will rise as car is driven regularly

I'm selling my BEAUTIFUL 1996 VW Passat TDI with 197k miles and almost perfect condition. It's White on the outside with dark cloth interior. The car has never been in an accident and is driven nearly every day. For the last 35K miles I've mainly used this as my highway commuter to various work related customer locations and to our summer home 100 miles away. She's always yielded around 40 - 42 mpg, highway, even higher. It is solid and tight. Diesel engine starts easily without fail, transmission shifts smooth and the fluid is clean, clutch feels good. Drive it anywhere.  Original paint, no rust at all, (Texas car) looks great, interior is clean, no cracks in the dash, seats and carpet are excellent.

Features:

·        Beautiful Original White Paint

·        Clean/lightweight alloy wheels

·        Power sunroof - Fully functional

·        Power Windows (All auto down and "ALL" work fine)

·        Power/Central Locking/Doors-trunk-gas

·        Power and heated mirrors (have spare drivers side mirror – saw it on e-bay and decided to by it)

·        Alarm

·        Cruise control

·        Tile wheel

·        A/C – Cold

·        Folding rear seats

·        New Kenwood stereo w/Bluetooth/USB, etc.  (Original radio comes with car)

·        Original floor mats!!

·        OEM Mud flaps all around

·        Trailer Hitch for light trailer with light hook up

·        Lighted vanity visors

·        Trunk rubber liner

I bought the car in early 2012 as the second owner down in Dallas, TX and drove her home to south east PA where I have taken excellent care of this car. I have many service records during my ownership.

Below is some of the more notable work done to the car in recent years, all major areas have been addressed on the car and she's ready to go for years to come!

  • Replaced timing belt, tensioner, water pump at 186K
  • Removed and completely cleaned head, intake manifold and turbo with new valve seals
  • Replace glow plugs and glow plug harness
  • New front brakes and rotors
  • Tires with only 8K miles – great shape
  • Recent battery
  • New Crankshaft pulley
  • New driver’s door window regulator
  • Replaced gear box fluid
  • New serpentine belt, tensioner and pulley
  • New shifter leather boot
  • New hand brake leather boot
  • New Alternator Regulator
  • Drivers side drive axel

Work done just prior to my ownership at 162K

·        New rear struts
·   Recent A/C Compressor
·       New cabin filter
·        New valve cover gasket
·        New oil pan gasket
·        New wiper blades
·        Rear wheel bearings tightened (did not need replacement)
·        New thermostat
·        New oil pressure sending unit

ENGINE:

  • 197k+ miles, 1.9L Inline 4 TurboDiesel engine
  • Just had timing checked and adjusted
  • Oil and filter changes “EVERY 5K Miles” with Synthetic VW 501 spec oil
  • ONLY UPGRADE – Bosio Nozzles - Sprint 520 SP520 TDI Injector Nozzle – Truly Unbelievable – These added so much power…if you need it…I don’t drive the car hard, just once in a while as this is recommended.  But the torque added with this upgrade is the best.  I still have the original injectors.
INTERIOR:
  • The cloth interior is in great shape, all seats and seat backs front and back.
  • I added black seat covers (see pics) just to protect the seats, plus to me, look better with the white paint.  I had intended to do the backs as well but just did not get around to it.
  • Headline is almost flawless.  There are just a couple bubbles on the sunroof slider
  • All windows work fine.
  • All power locks work fine
  • Carpet is excellent
  • And to my knowledge, Original Passat Floor Mats!!...still in decent shape.  (I always drive in socks on long drives for comfort and to protect the floor mats)

EXTERIOR:

  • The white exterior is in great shape for the age of the car. It shines bright, but like many cars this old and driven, it's not perfect….but close to it.
  • There are no real dings to point out and none that would come close to showing in pictures.
  • Rear spoiler – Yes, I added this as well.  It really makes the car come alive and look somewhat modern and sporty.

GREASE CAR CONVERSION:

  • My Passat is fitted with a greasecar.com WVO system.  It works flawlessly.  I am a geek engineer with a master chef for a brother in law…..hence this conversion made sense and is lots of fun.
  • The system is professionally installed and has never failed.  It is a 2 tank system which I highly recommend.
  • NOTE:  If the purchaser desires to keep the grease car system, it will cost $750.  These systems cost $1295 plus installation.
  • I will give the buyer who wants the system 10 gallons of clean WVO and all my tips for a simple filtration system that I build.
  • It’s a simple process to remove the system and no residual affects whatsoever.  I will show this to the purchaser.

THE NORMAL:

·        The car does smoke during wake up.  This is for just a few seconds.  They “all” do this for the most part.  As mentioned above, the timing was just fine toned.  No issues were found with the engine.

The BAD:

·        Sorry, but there is no BAD.

IF I WERE TO KEEP CAR:

·        As mentioned above, I’d add the back seat black seat covers.

WHY SELLING?

·        I actually have a neighbor who works for Mercedes and I’d like to try an older (as I get older) automatic Mercedes Diesel and run on WVO.  So if the person does not want the Greasecar system in my Passat, I’d be happy with that.

EXTRAS

  • Extra Engine Parts (with buy it now) - Starter with new brush kit, mechanical injector, AC compressor, and much more...

Pictures
I've tried to describe the car as accurately as possible, but pictures are worth 1000 words. If you need additional pictures, please let me know.

If there are any questions, please feel free to contact me at bmansi@comcast.net.  I'm more than happy to answer any questions you may have.  I'm a couple minutes away from Philadelphia International Airport and will be happy to pick you up. I do require a $500 deposit within 48 hours of auction close. Car will NOT leave me until it's been paid in full. I'll be more than happy to keep the car around a few weeks after close of auction to give you time to get everything organized. Clear open title in my name, ready to sign over.

Volkswagen's De Silva says next Scirocco will be 'completely different'

Tue, 02 Apr 2013

From our perspective, the reborn Volkswagen Scirocco is a handsome (if squat) little thing. Yet design-wise, it's always struck us as uncomfortably close to the Golf three-door hatchback with which it shares its basic underpinnings. That aesthetic kinship may be part of the reason why Volkswagen has steadfastly refused to import the Scirocco to North America, seeing as how the Golf doesn't regularly set the company's sales charts alight, and it's less expensive.
But that visual similarity might be about to change, says Walter De Silva, who recently told Australia's Car Advice that, "It must be completely different... we don't want to repeat the bodystyle of the Scirocco, we want to change that." Further, the Volkswagen Group's design boss says that the next-generation car isn't terribly far along in development yet - "at the moment, it's only a studio [project]... it's not defined." It's probably just as well, as the new seventh-generation Golf arguably borrows some of its design from the current Scirocco anyway.
So we should expect a much bolder, more differentiated design, right? Well, yes, no and maybe. Back in September, De Silva himself was quoted as saying that the era of flamboyant styling has passed, and that future VW designs will be simpler to better reflect the times and preserve resale value. So... how different could it be?

Defying Trump, major automakers finalize California emissions deal

Tue, Aug 18 2020

WASHINGTON — The California Air Resources Board (CARB) and major automakers on Monday confirmed they had finalized binding agreements to cut vehicle emissions in the state, defying the Trump administration's push for weaker curbs on tailpipe pollution. The agreements with carmakers Ford Motor Co, Volkswagen AG, Honda Motor Co and BMW AG were first announced in July 2019 as voluntary measures prompting anger from U.S. President Donald Trump. A month later, the Justice Department opened an antitrust probe into the agreements. The government ended the investigation without action. The Trump administration in March finalized a rollback of U.S. vehicle emissions standards to require 1.5% annual increases in efficiency through 2026. That is far weaker than the 5% annual increases in the discarded rules adopted under President Barack Obama. The 50-page California agreements, which extend through 2026, are less onerous than the standards finalized by the Obama administration but tougher than the Trump administration standards. The automakers have also agreed to electric vehicle commitments. Volvo Cars, owned by China's Geely Holdings, said in March it planned to join the automakers agreeing to the California requirements. It has also finalized its agreement. The settlement agreements say California and automakers agreed to resolve "potential legal disputes concerning the authority of CARB" and other states that have adopted California's standards. In May, a group of 23 U.S. states led by California and some major cities, challenged the Trump vehicle emissions rule. Other major automakers like General Motors Co, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV and Toyota Motor Corp did not join the California agreement. Those companies also sided with the Trump administration in a separate lawsuit over whether the federal government can strip California of the right to set zero emission vehicle requirements. Ford said the "final agreement will reduce emissions in our vehicles at a more stringent rate, support and incentivize the production of electrified products, and create regulatory certainty." BMW said "by setting these long-term, predictable, and achievable standards, we have the regulatory certainty that is necessary for long-term planning that will not only reduce greenhouse gas emissions but ultimately benefit consumers as well."

Autoweek dubs GMC Canyon, VW GTI its 2015 'Best of the Best'

Wed, Dec 17 2014

For kids around the globe, tis the season for Santa, reindeer and presents. For the automotive industry, the last quarter of each year is reserved for awards, whether they come from Motor Trend, Car and Driver, Automobile, or yes, Autoblog. The latest to get released comes from our friends at Autoweek. The magazine has echoed other outlets, naming a Volkswagen hatchback and a small pickup from General Motors as its Best of the Best. Unlike Motor Trend, which handed out its golden calipers to the Chevrolet Colorado and Volkswagen Golf range, Autoweek doled out its awards to the Colorado's twin, the GMC Canyon, while singling out the hottest version of the Golf, the GTI. "This is the best hot-hatch on the American market – and it may be the best car you can buy for less than $30K," one AW staffer said in the publication's article on the feature. Other staffers praised the absolute value provided by the GTI and the overall fun factor. The Canyon, meanwhile, was saluted for being "the perfect size," not to mention its excellent build quality, feature-rich cabin and overall practicality. "It's truly a truck in the most honest sense of the word," Autoweek wrote of the Canyon. Scroll down for the full press release on the announcement from Autoweek, which includes comments from both Volkswagen and GMC. And then head over and read AW's full feature on the awards. Autoweek names Best of the Best/Car and Truck for 2015 Volkswagen Golf GTI and GMC Canyon signal a strong year for design, performance and value DETROIT, Dec. 16, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, Autoweek named the Volkswagen Golf GTI as its Best of the Best/Car for 2015, beating a group of finalists that includes the Alfa Romeo 4C, Ford Mustang and Mercedes-Benz C-class; and the GMC Canyon as its Best of the Best/Truck for 2015, besting the likes of the Chevrolet Colorado, Lincoln MKC and Porsche Macan. Autoweek evaluates every new or significantly updated model throughout the year and begins to identify the standouts. Performance, economy, fit and finish, design, value, significance to the auto industry and personal taste all combine to define the Best of the Best. Four cars and four trucks make the grade, and Autoweek editors put them through rigorous road-handling tests at Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn, Mich. This is where a vehicle transcends the numbers and shows if design, performance and pure driving passion meld into an Autoweek Best of the Best pick.
