 Passat B4V-TDI #744, Wolfsburg Edition

1996 VW Passat B4V-TDI Wagon #744. This is one of the original 980 B4V-TDI wagons sold in the US in 1996. It is one of the remaining 622 still registered in the US.

This Passat B4V #744 was built 7-12-96 at the Audi assembly plant in Emden, Germany.

It was shipped to a VW dealer in Boulder, Colorado and sold new on 8-6-96. The original owner lived in Colorado until 2006 when he moved to Oregon. The Wagon was in Oregon until 2012 when it was purchased by NICECARS. This B4V Wagon has always been a western car, important in that it was not subjected to the salty winter roads of the Northeast section of the US. Western/Southern cars are the best.   This wagon gets 50 MPG using pump diesel on the highway.

We found no evidence this B4V-TDI Wagon  had any accidents (history report shows NO accidents) and we are convinced it had original paint when it arrived at NICECARS. The original paint on the roof and the hood were dull so it underwent a full repaint, base/coat clear/coat with PPG paint. The clear was color-sanded and buffed/polished to a high shine. It was painted the original "Emerald Green Pearl Metallic, LC6P/W7. The mechanical upgrades include new air filter, new fuel filter, new cabin filter, new German timing belt, new tensioner, new Serpentine belt, new roller, new v-belt, new water pump (German with steel impellers) new valve cover gasket, new intake to turbo pipe, cleaned intake manifold, cleaned inner cooler, replaced clamps on turbo cooler tubes, new turbo N-75 sensor,  new 109 sensor, new German color coded synthetic vacuum hoses, new return fuel lines, new crank vent assembly, cleaned electrical grounds on engine and body, new Diesel battery, flushed engine-new German Pentosin Synthetic oil-Bosch filter, new gear oil, flushed cooling system-new coolant reservoir and sending unit, new VW G12+ coolant, new glow plugs and new glow plug harness, new glow plug fuses, serviced injectors, serviced and timed injection pump. VW-GLS alloy wheels and new tires, new brakes, new brake rotors, rebuilt Audi Calipers, new OEM drive axles, new tie-rods, new ball joints and new wheel bearings, flushed brake hydraulics-new Pentosin DOT-4 fluid, new clutch fluid, new Bilstein struts, new alignment, new VW door handles with new OEM door strikers, new OEM VW windshield, new OEM emblems, new antenna mast/gasket, new floor mats, new Halo headlights with new bulbs, new OEM leather gear shift boot, new OEM leather parking brake handle, new aftermarket cup holders.

One year warranty!

Fully Charged rolls into season 3 with VW XL1 and electric Land Rover

Sat, Jan 18 2014

It's been some time since last we visited with British actor and electric car proponent Robert Llewellyn and his web-based video series, Fully Charged. The show, now sponsored by Ecotricity, has started rolling out its third season and now has available two episodes featuring a pair of truly unique – and diametrically opposed – vehicles. The first installment starts with some interesting numbers involving the host's Nissan Leaf and its energy consumption over the past 36,000 miles, but soon moves on to the ultra-aero, ultra-expensive Volkswagen XL1. Now, if you've already seen the footage from our own XL1 first drive review, there's not a lot new here except, perhaps, more enthusiasm and a better listen of the two-cylinder diesel kicking in. Still, it's a great reminder of a truly unique vehicle and we enjoyed the segment. The second episode features an electrified Land Rover Defender 110. This is a vehicle you'd more likely see on an African safari than at the local mall. It's not a home-built conversion either, but rather, something the company has put together "for the boffins to create the ideas and see if they work." Boasting a 50-mile range, it's certainly something we like to take on an off-road adventure. Llewellyn is given the chance to do just that, and though the course is somewhat milder than what we might attempt, it does feature a stretch of river and some rough, rutted tracks. You can watch both episodes by scrolling below let us know which vehicle you'd prefer in the comments. This writer is going with the four-wheel-drive. This content is hosted by a third party. Volkswagen shows off performance-ish Passat concept

Mon, 14 Jan 2013

As part of its 2013 Detroit Auto Show debut package, Volkswagen has rolled out a sportier version of the Passat sedan, though it's strictly conceptual for now. A small dose of go-fast visuals have been added to the handsome Volkswagen, including 19-inch wheels, carbon-capped mirrors, an advanced front lighting system, LED taillamps and dual exhaust. Some carbon bits and upgraded leather are found inside the cabin, as well.
But the real performance chops come in the form of a 1.8-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that sends 250 horsepower to the Passat's front wheels via a six-speed automatic transmission. That's a good boost in power over the 170 hp of the base 2.5-liter inline-five, but not quite as potent as the 3.6-liter VR6. A lowered sport suspension and revised electronic steering are also on hand, making things slightly more involving out on the road... we assume.
It's not quite the performance concept we were hoping for, but a more enthusiastic Passat isn't necessarily a bad thing. Scroll down for the press release.

Weekly Recap: 2016 CTS-V gives Cadillac new momentum for the new year

Sat, Dec 27 2014

It's been a rough year for Cadillac. The historic luxury carmaker been in the news for all of the wrong reasons: Declining sales, ditching its advertising agency and the relocation of its headquarters from Detroit to New York. But in late December, Cadillac reminded everyone what it does best: Build some of the rawest and most compelling luxury sedans in the world, as evidenced by the 2016 CTS-V. This monster churns out 640 horsepower from a supercharged 6.2-liter V8. Sound familiar? That's the Corvette Z06 engine, and it makes this CTS the most powerful production Cadillac ever. It also puts the sporting divisions of the Germans on notice. The new CTS-V easily overpowers the Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG S 4Matic and its 5.5-liter biturbo V8 rated at 577 hp, and the BMW M5 (with the competition pack) and its 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 that pushes out 575 hp. The rear-wheel drive Cadillac can sprint to 60 miles per hour in 3.7 seconds, which is close to the 3.5-second time turned in by the 4Matic-driven E63 S, and a bit quicker than the 4.1 seconds posted by the M5. With Magnetic Ride Control, General Motors' stout eight-speed automatic transmission (also used in the Corvette), Brembo brakes and a carbon-fiber option package that pretty much builds your car out of carbon fiber – it's clear this Cadillac means business. Truth be told, we expected this CTS-V to deliver. It's been a serious sports sedan for a decade, and the recent generation and its 556-hp arrogance have been particularly memorable. But notice what we're doing here? We're talking about product. Not who makes Cadillac's ads, or if the brand's headquarters has a mailing address in NYC. Like the 2016 ATS-V that's due in the spring, the debut of the 2016 CTS-V (on sale in late summer) is a shot in the arm for Cadillac, and its arrival comes during time of transition. The brand is trying to reinvent itself as a modern luxury maker. It wants new customers, a different image and obviously more sales. Those things are going to take time, but with a 640-hp sledgehammer of a sports sedan on tap for next year, Cadillac can still maintain some of its swagger through all of the change. But if you're into that stuff – and we are – this 1984 Audi Sport Quattro is sure to get your blood flowing.
