Vw Karmann Ghia Convertible 1968 on 2040-cars
Columbia, South Carolina, United States
I helped a friend of mine buy this car about a year and a half ago. He had owned one back in the 60's. He bought the car out of nostalgia. Unfortunately for him, due to health issues (Parkinson's) he just can not drive it. The car sits in my garage and I drive it once or twice a month. We bought the car down in Tampa Fl. The previous owner had owned it for around 14 years. He did the restoration work. It has been garage kept.
The floor pans were repaired with sheet metal and not replaced. There is no rust in the car that I can find and if there is it would be very minor. The rockers are in good shape, the nose was never hit. The body is in good condition. The paint job was done well, but it is not perfect. Everyone has their own idea as to condition on a scale. I would say it is a 7 on a scale of 1 to 10. It takes a lot to hit a 10 for me. There is no Bondo that I could find, however there was fairing filler used. Not a show car or trailer queen, just a nice driver. It runs, drives and stops well. It does need the carbs adjusted again, dead cold starts take a bit of pumping. It has plenty of power, around 90hp. The transmission was replaced right before we picked it up. It shifts well, with some clutch shudder from time to time. The oil cooler is a type4 and was resealed last year. As were the push rod tubes and steering box. The steering box is a re-man and there is no play. Front disc and rear brakes are in good shape. We do have a small oil leak somewhere, not sure if the engine needs to be dropped and resealed or we missed something. I have not taken the time to dig deeper. It has air conditioning, Japanese compressor. Most folks don't want it but my friend did. It does not have heat, it will need cables and tubes/boxes at the least. The previous owner living in Fl. did not want it. The interior is in good shape, the radio does not work. The windshield wiper motor works but it has linkage problems. The windshield and seal were new, two years ago. The cloth top is in nice shape inside and out, but does need repair at the top of the back window. All in all it is a very good looking, good driving car that does need some attention. I will e-mail additional photo's if interested. Thanks! |

VW Super Bowl teaser with Jimmy Cliff is like a less-mean Tosh.0 Web Redemption
Thu, 24 Jan 2013Reggae super-duper-star and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Jimmy Cliff has been using music to send positive vibes out into the universe for decades now, so its no surprise that his message on behalf of Volkswagen is one of redemption.
Dubbed Sunny Side, this web-spot is VW's warmup of sorts for what promises to be another blockbuster year in the world of Super Bowl commercials. Without giving away the game, the euphonious commercial sees Cliff opening his arms and his heart to some YouTube 'celebrities' that might see courser treatment from the likes of Tosh.0, for instance. We can't help but be reminded of Coca-Cola's legendary 1971 Hilltop spot with the "I'd like to buy the world a Coke" lyric, too.
Enjoy the pre-Super Bowl VW spot below, and don't forget to pay it forward... your karma will thank you. For those of you that just can't get enough of commercial-making magic, we've included a "making-of" video, as well.
Tesla tires turning on Stretchla Vanagon EV conversion project
Tue, Jan 7 2014It is one thing to say you are going to Frankenstein a Tesla Model S with a pair of Siamese-twinned Volkswagen Vanagons and quite another to actually start taking your newly-acquired, smashed-up electric sedan apart in an effort to bring it back to life. Otmar Ebenhoech is doing just that, and having no small successes along the way. The Stretchla project, as it is being called, has officially started and our protagonist has put together another bit of video to document his progress and let us know about some of the different challenges he's encountered and conquered. While our original post about this endeavor featured video of the stretched Vanagon's drivetrain removal, this latest installment focuses on the Model S. Otmar received the Tesla in less-than-operable condition. Otmar received the Tesla in less-than-operable condition and has been tackling some of the basic problems one might expect to encounter: lots of error messages and an electrically disconnected battery pack. Without the aid of a manual or technical diagrams, he's removed the battery pack and discovered why it wasn't sending power to the car. Scroll below to watch the ten-minute presentation and celebrate some initial victories. You can also check out the official Stretchla blog for more photos and updates, including the most recent one that discusses how he talked himself into paying (*spoiler alert) $42,000 for a wrecked, non-functional electric car, along with more recent struggles with the steering rack. Hit us up in the comments to let us know what kind of trouble you would get into with a Model S drivetrain of your own. This content is hosted by a third party.
