1974 Karman Ghia Coupe MATCHING NUMBERS Just Completed Restoration NO RUST
If I only had one word to describe this car it would be "sweetness". Sweetness in the way she starts, sweetness in the way she runs, sweetness in the way she looks and handles. This car has ZERO rust. How can I be so certain? Because she has just completed a complete, top to bottom, stem to stern, down to the nuts and bolts, frame-off-and-back-to-bare-metal restoration. Every square inch of the body has been inspected. If any rust was found, the section was replaced with steel. NOT fiberglass. Real steel, like it came from the factory. The edges are crisp and the curves are reminiscent of Marylin Monroe. Be sure to look at the picture of the bare metal nose. The body was then prepped and painted with a two-part epoxy primer. The base coat is Bahia Red, in accordance with the birth certificate issued from the Stiftung Automuseum in Wolfsburg, Germany. The clear coat is of the 2K (two-component) variety; which is chemically resistant, in case anything but the finest carnauba wax ever touches the finish. Both sides of the floor pans, as well as the wheel wells and door interior have been coated with a thin coat of truck bed liner. Afterwards, the wheel wells were painted the stock exterior color - appearing as it did when it rolled off the assembly line. Not only does this car have no rust, it will never rust again. The engine, whose serial number (AH443720) matches the frame, per the certificate issued by the Stiftung Automuseum, has been meticulously rebuilt to stock specifications. This includes new Mahle pistons and rings, cylinders, camshaft, lifters, heads and valves. That's all new -- not re-man or machined. The pistons and connecting rods have been balanced within 1 gram. This thing purrs. All the steering and suspension components are new, as is the clutch. New brake lines, master cylinder, calipers, disks, rotors, drums and cylinders. She even has a new car smell. The only modifications are pragmatic and reversible -- electronic ignition (dealing with points, gap, dwell and timing are are a thing of the past). Gone are the terrible little bullet fuses jammed where they cannot be seen. The electrical system has been hand-wired with an 18 circuit ATC fuse panel that is easily accessible. Just about every electrical component is on its own circuit. All the lights have been replaced with SuperBrite LEDs, so the gauges and turn signals can actually be seen. All the glass is rare, original, stock VW glass. The signal lenses are all original Hella, not reproductions. The interior upholstery is original, and in excellent condition considering its age. All the carpet has been replaced, as too the headliner and visors. The entire restoration process has been thoroughly and meticulously documented with nearly 200 photographs, as-built measurements and checklists. In each photograph is a slate containing the date and serial numbers, so there is no doubt that it is indeed the car in question. This documentation will be provided on a CD for the buyer, as well as the certificates from the museum. I find myself reluctantly parting with this beauty due to having an opportunity to purchase another car for my collection. Unfortunately, I find myself short on both cash and space in the garage, so something has to go. Make my loss your gain. This could be the nicest Karmann Ghia for sale on the east coast. Getting 35 miles to the gallon, this is an amazing daily driver that turns heads wherever it goes. She could also be a turnkey restoration show car. Come look at the car, then spend the day at the beach. The car is 2.5 hours from DC, Philly and Baltimore. SHIPPING: This vehicle is sold as is, where is. Although I will provide limited, reasonable assistance to help ship the car, ultimately it is the responsibility of the winning bidder to make arrangements for shipping or pick-up. Pontiac Aztek enjoys rebirth thanks to Millennials
Fri, Sep 11 2015Apparently, Millennials – those between 18 and 34 – aren't afraid to look different on the road, and they like performance, too. A new study by Edmunds is discovering some surprising vehicle choices by this group. Among them, the long-derided Pontiac Aztek is getting a new day in the sun with 25.5 percent its buyers coming from this generation in the first half of 2015. For comparison, Millennials represent an average of 16.8 percent of used car purchases. The Aztek is slowly shaking its reputation as a styling abomination, which seems tied to its appearance on Breaking Bad. The show premiered in 2008, and the Pontiac has been on this list for four of the past five years, according to Edmunds. It even led the pack in 2010. A recent Retro Review from MotorWeek also showed that the crossover wasn't always so hated. While it's still a shock to see the Aztek on any popularity list, the awkward-looking crossover only ranks sixth among Millennials. The vehicle with the biggest portion of buyers from the generation is the Dodge Magnum with 27.6 percent. According to Edmunds, the bluntly styled wagon is especially popular in Detroit and Chicago. The Chrysler Pacifica comes in a close second at 27.3 percent. When it comes to used cars, value and utility appear to trump just about anything else for many Millennial buyers," Edmunds analyst Jeremy Acevedo said in the report. Young buyers aren't afraid of sporty rides, either. The Subaru WRX has 26.4 percent Millennial buyers to rank third place on the list, and the Volkswagen R32 takes fifth at 25.7 percent. Just a few points lower in seventh place is the Nissan GT-R at 25.4 percent, and the final performance machine in 10th place is the Lexus IS-F with 24.7 percent. Related Video:
Porsche CEO Matthias Mueller throws hat back in ring for VW CEO job
Tue, Mar 24 2015Toward the end of February it got leaked that Porsche CEO Matthias Muller was being promoted to Volkswagen's supervisory board. Muller's credentials and his success over 36 years at the VW Group have, for observers, put his name in the pool of potential candidates to succeed current group CEO Martin Winterkorn when Winterkorn retires in two years. But the 61-year-old Muller told German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung earlier in February, "It's no solution to put a 63-year-old at the head of Volkswagen," and the statement was taken to mean he wasn't considering the job. Muller now says the quote was misunderstood. In a report in Automotive News, the newly minted board member says he was commenting on what it would mean for the supervisory board and the Group if they nominated a 63-year-old to replace a 69-year-old - that it wouldn't result in a "generation change." However, if that's what they choose to do, Muller feels great: "I stand ready to take over any assignment," he said. Muller's name re-enters the candidacy pool, but we still have no idea who leads the running for the role and Winterkorn isn't saying a word. It could be three years before we know: Winterkorn's contract concludes at the end of next year but there is speculation he'll re-up for two years to see out the end of the Strategy 2018 initiative.
Autoweek dubs GMC Canyon, VW GTI its 2015 'Best of the Best'
Wed, Dec 17 2014For kids around the globe, tis the season for Santa, reindeer and presents. For the automotive industry, the last quarter of each year is reserved for awards, whether they come from Motor Trend, Car and Driver, Automobile, or yes, Autoblog. The latest to get released comes from our friends at Autoweek. The magazine has echoed other outlets, naming a Volkswagen hatchback and a small pickup from General Motors as its Best of the Best. Unlike Motor Trend, which handed out its golden calipers to the Chevrolet Colorado and Volkswagen Golf range, Autoweek doled out its awards to the Colorado's twin, the GMC Canyon, while singling out the hottest version of the Golf, the GTI. "This is the best hot-hatch on the American market – and it may be the best car you can buy for less than $30K," one AW staffer said in the publication's article on the feature. Other staffers praised the absolute value provided by the GTI and the overall fun factor. The Canyon, meanwhile, was saluted for being "the perfect size," not to mention its excellent build quality, feature-rich cabin and overall practicality. "It's truly a truck in the most honest sense of the word," Autoweek wrote of the Canyon. Scroll down for the full press release on the announcement from Autoweek, which includes comments from both Volkswagen and GMC. And then head over and read AW's full feature on the awards. Autoweek names Best of the Best/Car and Truck for 2015 Volkswagen Golf GTI and GMC Canyon signal a strong year for design, performance and value DETROIT, Dec. 16, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, Autoweek named the Volkswagen Golf GTI as its Best of the Best/Car for 2015, beating a group of finalists that includes the Alfa Romeo 4C, Ford Mustang and Mercedes-Benz C-class; and the GMC Canyon as its Best of the Best/Truck for 2015, besting the likes of the Chevrolet Colorado, Lincoln MKC and Porsche Macan. Autoweek evaluates every new or significantly updated model throughout the year and begins to identify the standouts. Performance, economy, fit and finish, design, value, significance to the auto industry and personal taste all combine to define the Best of the Best. Four cars and four trucks make the grade, and Autoweek editors put them through rigorous road-handling tests at Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn, Mich. This is where a vehicle transcends the numbers and shows if design, performance and pure driving passion meld into an Autoweek Best of the Best pick.
