1971 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia 2+2 Coupe - Classic! No Reserve!!! on 2040-cars
Hot Springs National Park, Arkansas, United States
1971 VW KARMANN GHIA NO RESERVE AUCTION!!! Up for your bidding consideration is this 1971 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia in the red on black color combination. The engine is original and is the 1600 air cooled VW motor that it is mated to a 4 speed transmission. The engine has just had a top end complete rebuild including new rings, rod bearings, main bearings, new cam bearings, cam & lifters, new oil pump and it runs great! The engine restoration was performed by a former James Motors of Hot Springs Volkswagen mechanic from the 1970's. His love affair for VW has continued and this is how he spends his time in retirement. The car brakes well and drives nicely. The tires are old and for spirited driving will need to be replaced. The spare tire is brand new. The exterior is very dated and needs a new paint job. Originally a green car, it has an Earl Scheib type paint job from the 1970's It appears to be a very solid body free of problematic rust so the foundation is there for a quality paint job. Of course not everybody wants perfection and if driving a car from the Nixon/McGovern era without a restoration is your thing...then this little Ghia is good to go! The engine cover lid does not securely fasten and if you do opt for the paint job then this will have to be repaired as well. The interior is like the exterior... for perfection it will need to be completely restored. The pictures depict the 43 year old cabin well so the restoration will depend upon its new owner. This is a great car to restore or to drive, the choice is yours. The glass, the wheels, and the VW hub caps are fair to very good. The rear bumpers are quite nice and the front bumpers need some work. The side moldings are missing. The Italian design of the Karmann Ghia was the creation of Luigi Segre of Carrozzeria Ghia. The bodies were handbuilt by Karmann. The original owners manual and Volkswagen maintenance records are included in the sale. This little Ghia was originally sold on June 28, 1971 by Warden Volkswagen of Little Rock, AR to Fred Ball. Mr. Ball faithfully recorded his service at Warden up to 53521 miles. It was probably at this time that he parted ways with the VW. To restore/collect or to drive as-is this is a great opportunity to buy a vintage air cooled Karmann Ghia with this no reserve auction in place. Please e-mail me with any questions on the Ghia and I will quickly respond. Also a pre-purchase inspection is available most anytime... just e-mail for an appointment. Winning bidder is to pay in full within (3) three days of winning the auction. Cashiers check, bank-wire, personal check (must clear first), or cash in person are all acceptable methods for payment. If the winner wishes to use a transport company or a trailer for delivery I will be happy to be available to the driver to expedite a timely transfer. I will also keep the Karmann Ghia inside my enclosed garage for up to 30 days while shipping arrangements are being made.. The vehicle is being sold as is, where is with no warranty, expressed written or implied. Any descriptions or representations are for identification purposes only and are not to be construed as a warranty of any type. It is the responsiblity of the buyer to have satisfied himself/herself as to the condition of the vehicle.
On Jan-16-14 at 06:33:29 PST, seller added the following information: I can be reached at 501.617.6393 with any questions. Car Club USA: CleanMPG Northwest Rally
Tue, May 19 2015Car Club USA heads to Los Angeles for the CleanMPG Northwest Rally, where a group of like-minded hypermiling enthusiasts led by Wayne Gerdes attempts to drive from Los Angeles, CA, to Bend, OR, on one tank of fuel. For this challenge, Wayne tapped some of the most accomplished hypermilers in the world, including Guinness World Record holder Bob Winger and Mike Sefton, "the most fuel efficient driver in all of Canada." It doesn't take long for the competition to get heated. "They're not aggressive enough, and it's not going to save them anything by being soft right now," says Gerdes as the group attempts to navigate the Interstate traffic. "Driving in Los Angeles is a hyper miler's nightmare," says Winger. The trip will challenge both car and driver, while putting the latest fuel-efficient tech to the test. Wayne is piloting the Volkswagen Golf Sportwagen TDI, Sefton drives the Audi A3 TDI, and Winger attempts the trek in a Honda Accord Hybrid. It's diesel versus hybrid tech on this fuel-efficient trip of a lifetime. Each Car Club USA episode features a different car club or event from across the US, where passionate owner communities gather to share automotive experiences and embark on incredible adventures. From Main Street cruises to off-road trails, catch all the latest car club activity on Autoblog. VW's Winterkorn tells 20,000 staffers of big cost-cutting plans
Thu, 24 Jul 2014During a gathering of 20,000 Volkswagen Group employees at company headquarters in Wolfsburg, Germany on Wednesday, CEO Martin Winterkorn dropped a bombshell. The boss stated that the automaker isn't operating efficiently enough and admitted the company needs to radically start cutting back to raise its profit margins. To right the ship, Winterkorn has proposed killing off less profitable models and spending less on research and development.
According to Reuters, Winterkorn wants to raise the VW brand's profit margin from about 2.9 percent in 2013 to a target of 6 percent. To make that possible, his plan amounts to increasing cost cutting until Volkswagen reaches about 5 billion euros ($6.7 billion) per year to get things back in order. "Over the short-term, we urgently need more efficiency and higher profit," the CEO said during his speech, according to Reuters.
However, Winterkorn can't make these decisions unilaterally. Volkswagen's works council also has a seat on the supervisory board to represent laborers, and it isn't likely to take the proposed cuts sitting down.
Volkswagen unveils sportier Passat Performance Concept ahead of Detroit debut
Fri, 11 Jan 2013Ahead of its official unveiling at next week's Detroit Auto Show, Volkswagen has released some preliminary details and images of its Passat Performance Concept - a car that, as its name suggests, adds a little more spice to the automaker's midsize sedan formula. VW makes no mention of any production intent for this road-ready-looking sedan, simply stating that the Performance Concept is a way to "explore this practical four-door's sportier side."
It certainly doesn't look too sporty, the only visual upgrades being larger 19-inch wheels, dual exhaust, bi-xenon headlamps with VW's Advanced Front Lighting system, LED taillmaps and carbon-look mirror caps. Inside, there are carbon interior accents and two-tone leather upholstery. But no matter, the real upgrades for this mightier Passat are found below the sheetmetal.
Powering the Performance Concept is a 1.8-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, churning out 250 horsepower and sending its grunt to the ground via a six-speed automatic transmission. For reference, that's 80 more horsepower than the Passat's base 2.5-liter inline-five, but 20 horsepower less than the potent 3.6-liter VR6. As for other performance upgrades, Volkswagen has fitted the car with a lowered sport suspension and revamped electronic steering, which should indeed add a bit more dynamic feedback to the already nice-driving sedan.
