1967 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia Coupe on 2040-cars
Napa, California, United States
You are looking at a 1967 VW Karmann Ghia Coupe. Purchased from a private seller in '98, this car was completely restored (refurbished anyway) in the early 00's with custom green paint with gold flecks, a new rebuilt engine and transmission and an all new interior.
Since then, the body has suffered extensive damage from two separate slow speed accidents that does not affect the ability of the car to drive or the trunk to close. The body does have a lot of bondo in the front, however the rear is mostly clean and bondo free, so it could be salvaged. There is a lot of rust in the rear floor (under the back seat) and around the rear window where it has leaked in the past. Mechanically the engine no longer runs, as it's been sitting for a couple years and the engine appears to have seized, however the rest of the components are either new or in good shape (carb, distributer, coil, etc) and it comes with a never used spare starter and coil. This car would make an excellent parts car as it has almost all the interior, trim and badges intact. All the wipers, stereo, and other electrical components work fine. As a project car, the body would most certainly need extensive work, so it would be best to go to someone who is experienced with that sort of thing. I drove this car for quite a few years as my daily driver and it drives like a champ even at higher speeds. To get back to running condition (if you just wanted to drive it and not fix the body) all you'd need is a rebuilt engine and you'd be all set! Please let me know if you have any questions or would like additional pictures! Payment is required in full 3 days after the close of the auction. Buyer will need to make any shipping arrangements, or can pick it up from me locally. |

The UK votes for Brexit and it will impact automakers
Fri, Jun 24 2016It's the first morning after the United Kingdom voted for what's become known as Brexit – that is, to leave the European Union and its tariff-free internal market. Now begins a two-year process in which the UK will have to negotiate with the rest of the EU trading bloc, which is its largest export market, about many things. One of them may be tariffs, and that could severely impact any automaker that builds cars in the UK. This doesn't just mean companies that you think of as British, like Mini and Jaguar. Both of those automakers are owned by foreign companies, incidentally. Mini and Rolls-Royce are owned by BMW, Jaguar and Land Rover by Tata Motors of India, and Bentley by the VW Group. Many other automakers produce cars in the UK for sale within that country and also export to the EU. Tariffs could damage the profits of each of these companies, and perhaps cause them to shift manufacturing out of the UK, significantly damaging the country's resurgent manufacturing industry. Autonews Europe dug up some interesting numbers on that last point. Nissan, the country's second-largest auto producer, builds 475k or so cars in the UK but the vast majority are sent abroad. Toyota built 190k cars last year in Britain, of which 75 percent went to the EU and just 10 percent were sold in the country. Investors are skittish at the news. The value of the pound sterling has plummeted by 8 percent as of this writing, at one point yesterday reaching levels not seen since 1985. Shares at Tata Motors, which counts Jaguar and Land Rover as bright jewels in its portfolio, were off by nearly 12 percent according to Autonews Europe. So what happens next? No one's terribly sure, although the feeling seems to be that the jilted EU will impost tariffs of up to 10 percent on UK exports. It's likely that the UK will reciprocate, and thus it'll be more expensive to buy a European-made car in the UK. Both situations will likely negatively affect the country, as both production of new cars and sales to UK consumers will both fall. Evercore Automotive Research figures the combined damage will be roughly $9b in lost profits to automakers, and an as-of-yet unquantified impact on auto production jobs. Perhaps the EU's leaders in Brussels will be in a better mood in two years, and the process won't devolve into a trade war. In the immediate wake of the Brexit vote, though, the mood is grim, the EU leadership is angry, and investors are spooked.
Yes, a family of 5 can live in a 1981 VW Westfalia van
Fri, Feb 14 2014Automakers and marketers trying to reach environmentally conscious consumers who desire the simple life basically have two strategies: promote electric vehicles that can be charged through green energy or sell a 30-year-old Volkswagen van on Craigslist. Nicolas Boullosa and Kirsten Dirksen opted for Plan B and turned a 1981 Volkswagen Westfalia camper into a "micro-living" experiment. The co-founders of the simple living website faircompanies packed up their van and three young children for a road trip through the Pacific Northwest. They even turned the adventure into a documentary called Summer of (Family) Love, which you can view below. It's two hours long, so maybe add this to your weekend viewing list. They limited themselves to one backpack per person into a camper that they purchased off Craigslist and named "Westy." They stuck to their original intention of cooking all their own meals off a propane stove, creating a new little home every night in a different location, mostly spaces outside RV parks. They met up with other enthusiasts of the "tiny house" community who live like nomads. They were able to interview a few of then and, "With each stop we picked up some new piece of wisdom about life's essentials," Dirksen wrote in the faircompanies blog. TRANSLOGIC 150: Volkswagen XL1
Mon, Feb 24 2014How do you build the world's most fuel-efficient production car? Start with the world's most aerodynamic design. The Volkswagen XL1 is capable of 261 miles per gallon thanks to its sleek shape and ultra efficient plug-in diesel hybrid powertrain. The downside is that only 250 will be made and none will be sold stateside. That didn't stop us from taking our turn behind the wheel of this truly revolutionary ride.
