Up for auction is my immaculate, adult-driven, nicely-modded, never-raced, never-wrecked 2004.5 Jetta GLI. I bought this car in 2008 from a dealership in Atlanta with a little over 30,000 old-lady-driven miles. Since then, it's been my daily driver for my roughly 10 mile commute to and from work, and taken on a number of regional road trips (which highway miles account for a decent percentage of the overall mileage, now a shade over 107,000).

Incredibly clean, inside and out.  I detail my cars myself on a monthly basis with professional products (orbital waxer, clay barred annually, etc.).  This car has almost always been garaged or under a carport (at work and home).  No dings, dents, or scratches of any significance.  Religiously maintained at all regular intervals by a VW specialty shop in Memphis, TN (Wolfsburg Auto).  In anticipation of selling, I had my shop complete a comprehensive inspection, and repair or replace anything and everything of any material concern. They replaced the cam tensioner gasket due to a minor leak, the thermostat, and a faulty sensor.  The water pump and timing belt have also been replaced in the past, as these items commonly fail at a predictable mileage on these cars.  Coil packs have all been recently replaced as well.   There are currently zero mechanical, electrical, or other issues, except as noted below.  I have complete documentation of every repair, oil change, tire purchase, etc. from the date I purchased the car.

Performance and aesthetic enhancements as follows:

APR Stage II ECU
AEM cold air intake with recently refreshed K&N filter
Turbo-Back Milltek exhaust
APR Diverter Valve
Clear side lamps
New rotors and pads all around (slotted and drilled in the rear)
40-50% life left on Hankook Ventus V12 tires
Replaced VW center caps for BBS carbon-fiber-look center caps
Thule bike rack with 2 Echeleon carriers (retail $1400), which I can include or not as desired, at no extra cost.

Flaws: Former owner had no love for the front valence, so there are some scrapes and scratches in the valence, along with normal rock chips in the front bumper.  A $300 re-spray of the bumper and valence would make this car look showroom new.  A few virtually imperceptible scratches on the rear deck lid from the rear glass being busted by an errant golf ball. Otherwise, literally not a scratch or ding on the car anywhere.  The clear coat on a couple of the wheels has naturally faded in spots over time, and the prior owner also added some curb rash. Nothing major.

On the interior, the head unit (Alpine) has been glitchy lately, and probably should be replaced soon. It works just fine, but there's a loose connection somewhere that results in the LED illumination cutting in and out.  The driver's side floor mat has a hole just near the gas pedal, which is purely a function of wear, and could easily be replaced. Otherwise, the interior looks as though no one has ever sat in any of the seats besides the driver's seat. No pets, no babies, no smoking. The keyless entry is occasionally slightly glitchy.  It will occasionally fail to lock the rear driver's side door, but the alarm always works.

I am a BMW and VW enthusiast, and I have studied the market for these cars.  I can say with confidence that this is the cleanest, most pampered GLI available on the market, as most have been abused, raced, not adult-driven, modified poorly, and generally not taken care of.  Potential buyers are welcome to speak to the shop that has maintained this car.  I am also willing to entertain an escrow mechanism for out-of-state buyers who may need to have the car shipped, but would like to have it inspected at a shop of their choice.  Happy to work with shipping companies, or arrange for local inspection or pickup.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions, or requests for additional pictures.  I have many, and will take as many more as are requested.   Payment upon close of auction must be received three (3) business days thereafter.  Cashier's check or wire transfer only.   Title will be signed over immediately upon receipt of payment, whether in-state or out-of-state.

Thanks for looking.

VW recalling 38k Jettas, Passats, Golfs and Beetles for fuel leak

Wed, Dec 31 2014

Earlier we reported on a recall issued for the 2015 VW Jetta regarding a problem with the headlights, and now Volkswagen and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration have issued another recall for a separate issue affecting not only the Jetta, but several other models as well. The issue revolves around a sealing cap in the fuel rail, which could leak fuel into the engine compartment and potentially cause a fire. The problem affects an estimated 37,979 vehicles in the United States, including the 2014-15 Jetta (manufactured between March 28 and November 24, 2014), the 2014-15 Passat (April 7 to November 18), the 2015 Golf and GTI (July 1 to November 20) and the 2014-15 Beetle and Beetle Convertible (March 31 to November 27). That covers pretty much the entire range offered by Volkswagen of America, short of the Tiguan and Touareg crossovers (and the discontinued Eos convertible). Considering, though, that VW routinely sells around 30,000 vehicles in the US each month, the small number of vehicles being recalled (relative to the quantity out there) tells you this recall really only affects a specific cross-section of models. Owners of the affected vehicles can expect to be contacted by their dealers to have the fuel rails replaced. RECALL Subject : Fuel Leaking Into Engine Compartment Report Receipt Date: DEC 22, 2014 NHTSA Campaign Number: 14V809000 Component(s): FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE Potential Number of Units Affected: 37,979 Manufacturer: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. SUMMARY: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain model year 2014-2015 Jetta vehicles manufactured March 28, 2014, to November 24, 2014, certain 2014-2015 Passat vehicles manufactured April 7, 2014, to November 18, 2014, certain 2015 Golf and GTI vehicles manufactured July 1, 2014, to November 20, 2014, and certain 2014-2015 Beetle and Beetle Convertible vehicles manufactured March 31, 2014, to November 27, 2014. A sealing cap at the fuel rail may fail, allowing fuel to leak into the engine compartment. CONSEQUENCE: A fuel leak, in the presence of an ignition source, can result in a vehicle fire. REMEDY: Volkswagen will notify owners, and dealers will replace the fuel rails with new parts, free of charge. The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-822-8987. Volkswagen's number for this recall is 24Bi.

VW admits 430,000 2016 models have implausible CO2 ratings

Mon, Nov 16 2015

Volkswagen finally explained more details about its CO2 rating scandal in Europe and admitted that 430,046 of the estimated 800,000 affected vehicles with "implausible" figures came from the 2016 model year. They included some from Audi, Seat, Skoda, VW, and VW Commercial Vehicles, according to the automaker's list (as a PDF). The problem mostly impacts diesel engines, but the inventory also shows some gasoline mills. VW will next determine the accurate CO2 emissions for these vehicles, and the German Federal Vehicle and Transport Authority will supervise that process to ensure the data's veracity. The automaker will also launch websites in Europe to let owners enter their model's VIN to check whether it's affected. Because governments there often link vehicle taxes and CO2 production, the company promises to work with regulators in each country to cover any fees that result from the inaccurate figures. VW announced the CO2 scandal earlier in November and estimated the equivalent of $2.2 billion to fix it at the time. A later report claimed that a group of engineers were responsible for fabricating the emissions data. They allegedly couldn't meet reduction goals from Martin Winterkorn, and between 2013 and this spring the workers did things like overinflate the tires during testing to achieve the desired results. VW is also closer to a fix in the diesel emissions scandal. According to an anonymous insider to Bloomberg, the company has a repair for the 1.6-liter engine that's reportedly neither very complex nor expensive. German regulators would still need to approve the solution before it could roll out to owners. Next step in clarifying the CO2 issue Affected Volkswagen Group models of the current model year have been identified Customers being informed via website Discussions with the authorities have begun The Volkswagen Group reports that the vehicles of the 2016 model year affected by the CO2 issue have been identified. There is thus now clarity about the new vehicles of the current model year out in the marketplace. On 3 November 2015, the Group had already reported that irregularities may have arisen in determining the CO2 figures for type approval of around 800,000 vehicles. This was identified during its own currently ongoing investigations and had been made public. The internal investigations into the current vehicles of the 2016 model year provide results for narrowing down the actually affected vehicles with implausible CO2 figures.

2013 Volkswagen Golf R Cabriolet

Thu, 07 Mar 2013

The Golf VI's Last Hurrah Is Pure Niche
This was in the heart of the ultra-chic Côte d'Azur during winter. The car to be tested was the not-for-North America 2013 Volkswagen Golf R Cabriolet. Prevailing weather conditions here this time of year are bizarrely pleasant, as though a dome of Swarovski crystal has been placed over the entire region to protect it from any real winter spoiling things. And the zippy Golf R Cabriolet is a sports car designed precisely for this area's preciously narrow winding streets, as well as for the lofty budgets of its property owners.
So then why was it snowing like we were in northern Michigan? The weather front hit from the north like a swift kick to the Jordaches. The roof was open on this Candy White Golf R Cabrio and I, as is my wont, was determined through thick or thin to keep it retracted. It had been raining and sometimes sleeting like the End of Days, but I kept the lid cracked because the 261-horsepower cabrio - the most powerful convertible ever built by Volkswagen - was snipping along nicely as the bad weather blew over my head and wetted only the rear headrests.
