This auction is for a 2010 Volkswagen GTI 2-door hatchback finished in United Grey Metallic with the Interlagos cloth interior. If you need to sell your current vehicle in order to buy this one, let me know the details about it and maybe I can give you more as a trade-in for it than you would get otherwise. Tell me the year, make, model, miles, condition etc. and a realistic price that you are looking to get for it. I would consider taking up to about half in trade. If you are already familiar with the GTI, you may want to skip over the boxed section below that gives a comprehensive and detailed overview of the car, and go straight to the description and pictures.

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE MK6 VOLKSWAGEN GTI

The 2010 GTI is powered by a 200 horsepower 2.0 liter turbocharged TSI® (Turbo Stratified Injection) DOHC 16-valve engine that has received numerous rave reviews by engineers and the automotive press for it’s high power output, excellent economy and inherent smoothness. Code named CCTA, this engine features a cast iron engine block for maximum durability and rigidity along with a balance shaft for smoothness, an aluminum cylinder head with sodium filled exhaust valves for light weight and excellent heat dissipation, dual overhead cams with INA variable valve timing and a variable intake manifold for maximum power output at all engine speeds, an integral exhaust driven turbocharger to eliminate turbo lag along with an intercooler for a dense intake charge, a steel timing chain for reduced maintenance, high pressure direct injection fuel injection for excellent gas mileage, drive by wire throttle for precise engine control and coil on plug (COP) ignition for reliability in all environmental conditions. Instead of a rubber timing belt found in many other cars that needs periodic replacement, the GTI engine uses a steel timing chain that lasts for the life of the engine, and it uses hydraulic valve lifters that never need adjustment unlike some cars that need periodic valve adjustments.

The engine is mated to a 6-speed DSG® (Direct Shift Gearbox) automatic transmission with Launch Control and paddle shifters. The DSG® can be thought of as an automated manual transmission without the need for a clutch pedal. The DSG® combines the ease of driving an automatic with the more direct power transmission and better fuel economy of a manual transmission. This transmission contains two independent gearbox units along with dual-clutch technology – two clutches in a common housing. Clutch 1 serves the first gearbox unit with 1st, 3rd, 5th, and reverse, while clutch 2 serves the second gearbox unit with 2nd, 4th, and 6th gear. One gearbox pre-selects first gear while the second one puts the next gear on standby. As the gearbox changes to second, the second gearbox is engaged and the original gearbox reaches third. As you shift upwards the sequence continues in a series of seamless moves. Because power is simply switched from one gearbox to another, not only are gear shifts smooth, but they are also very fast: each change takes less than four-hundredths of a second.

The DSG® transmission gives you a choice of two driving modes: Normal and Sport. In Sport mode, the engine stays at higher rpms longer before shifting up and downshifts sooner for more spirited driving maneuvers. If you want to take over completely, you can control the DSG® manually. Place the shifter in D and move it to the right, then nudge it forward or backward to change gears, or use the paddle shifters mounted on the steering wheel: left for downshifts, right for upshifts. Whichever gear you are currently in is shown in the multi-function display. New for 2010, the GTI has XDS (Cross Differential System) that helps compensate for increased wheel spin on the interior wheel and helps improve traction while turning quickly. For maximum acceleration from a stop, the DSG® has a Launch Control mode. To engage Launch Control, switch off ESP and press the brake pedal with your left foot. Then place the gear lever to the Sport setting and bring the engine up to about 3,000 rpm. When you release the brake the car will accelerate at the maximum rate with a minimum of wheel spin depending on prevailing traction conditions. According to Car and Driver magazine, the DSG® transmission shifts quicker than any typical driver can shift a manual transmission, and in fact, when test driving both versions, the DSG® had a quicker 0 to 60 mph time than a 6-speed manual equipped car.

Rounding out the GTI are brakes and a suspension made to carve up twisting roads. Start off with a rigid chassis and unit body construction with laser seam welding for a stiff foundation and add in a four-wheel independent suspension with MacPherson struts up front and a 4-link setup in the rear as well as anti-roll bars all around. Add electomechanical rack and pinion steering and 18 inch low profile tires for precise handling. For secure braking there are 4 wheel discs with Anit-Lock Brakes (ABS) and Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) that can sense panic stopping and automatically apply all available power brake boost instantly to potentially reduce stopping distances. Calipers are factory painted red for a sporty touch. For maximum control in all road conditions, Anti-Slip Regulation (ASR) along with an electronic stability program (ESP) uses the components from the ABS system and the electronic throttle to regulate engine torque to enhance directional control with over/understeering of the vehicle being counteracted by applying brakes to the appropriate wheel to create a countervailing vehicle movement. It goes without saying that the GTI is one of the most fun cars to drive in it’s class, and that it’s quicker, faster and handles better than many other pseudo-sports cars costing thousands more.

The GTI was redesigned for 2010 as the MK6 and is improved over the previous MK5 model in every respect. Both mechanically and stylistically the GTI has earned the reputation of becoming one of the best vehicles in its class and has won comparison tests in all the major car magazines. A few quotes from Car & Driver include, “…the whip-crack shifts of a dual-clutch gearbox are mighty intoxicating.” and, “The VW’s steering is light and precise, the ride-and-handling balance is among the best in the world, and the interior is fabulously turned out.” The GTI’s new exterior style is very unique. From its sleek lines and sweeping curves incorporating elements from premium European sports cars, it looks handsome from any angle without being flashy.

A quick walk around the car reveals how the GTI is one of the most stylish vehicles ever created in the sport compact class of automobiles. Start up front with its sharp sleek lines including a smaller upper black honeycomb grille with red accent trim and a matching larger lower air intake grille flanked on both sides with aerodynamic slats and more honeycomb mesh leading to large fog lights. Above the fogs there are clear lens High Intensity Discharge (HID) Bi-Xenon headlights which are part of the optional Adaptive Front-Lighting System (AFS). These feature projector beam lights that respond to steering inputs and can illuminate curved sections of the road ahead. Next, a steeply raked windshield and sleek fender flares flow into smooth curves along the sides of the car with body colored door handles and body colored mirrors incorporating chic euro style secondary turn signal lights for a monochromatic look. Black rocker moldings and VW logo pinstripes add visual appeal. On the roof a low profile shark fin antenna adds another euro touch and the sunroof air deflector reduces wind buffeting. Then, going back, the cars’ lines meld into a nearly vertical rear window and hatchback surrounded by large taillights, while the bumper has a black lower valance to accentuate the twin polished chrome exhaust tips with an afterburner red interior coating suggesting this car is ready to take off at any moment.

The exterior is beautiful to look at, but if you like high tech design, the interior is a feast for the eyes. Get in and sit down into a sport bucket seat that adjusts to the perfect driving position with settings for height adjustment, recline and lumbar support. Check out how supportive the side bolsters are and how comfortable the cushions feel plus the Interlagos fabric pattern is a nice retro touch going back to the first GTI in 1983 and the red stitching adds modern flare. Then adjust the tilt and telescoping leather wrapped steering wheel to achieve complete driving control. Notice how the racecar inspired flat bottom shape and thickly padded rim affords just the right grip and that the paddle shifters, cruise control and infotainment switches are just a fingertip away. Brushed aluminum and chrome trim plus more red stitching add visual appeal. Now glance above you at the large glass moonroof that lets in light in all weather conditions and opens up on nice sunny days. Next, look ahead at the dashboard with the large easy to read tachometer and 180 mph speedometer with just MPH markings. If it’s nighttime, turn on the lights and see the night vision red illumination and how quickly your eyes adjust to the light. Look right and left at more brushed aluminum and chrome trim on the doors and center console as well as on the air vents and radio knobs in the center stack. Finally, glance down at the shifter with its aluminum trim and red stitching and the handbrake lever with even more red stitching that would be the envy of a Ferrari owner. Look at the sport pedals with brushed aluminum trim as well as a real dead pedal. Not only is the styling all sport, but all the textures have a rich feel and look and all the switchgear have a precise soft touch action. From the perforations of the leather wrapped steering wheel, the graining pattern on the dash and door panels, or the layout of the knobs and switches on the dash, everything looks and feels like it came from a more expensive car.

Now turn on the engine and feel how smooth it idles. Next, take it for a spin. Notice how the DSG transmission fluidly transfers power to the pavement compared to any manual transmission car you’ve driven before, but with all the convenience of an automatic. Shifts are fast and feel silky smooth to give a whole other dimension to the driving experience. Now accelerate hard and enjoy the power as the turbo pins you back in your seat without any lag and use the paddle shifters if the mood strikes you. So whether on congested city streets, open highways, or twisting mountain roads, you will be amazed how smooth, quick and powerful this GTI drives.

The car is in beautiful condition inside and out. The United Grey paint just about glows in the sunlight. It has an excellent dent-free body without even any parking lot door dings or bumper scuffs to mention, just a few touched scratches on the front bumper at the left side and a couple on the rear bumper. That’s it. If you hate those annoying dings and blemishes, you’ll love the body on this car. Only problem is you will have to park at the far end of the lot to keep it looking this nice. The paint itself is excellent and has been cleaned with Meguiar’s Smooth Surface Clay System, polished with Meguiar’s Mirror Glaze cleaner polish and topped off with Meguiar’s Ultimate Synthetic Wax for a high gloss shine. Even both the front and also the backsides of the wheels have been cleaned and waxed! How obsessed is that? Ditto for the chrome exhaust tips. The windows have a light shade of tint installed. Keep the tint on at your discretion, as I can’t be responsible if your state has a problem with it or if you get a ticket.

The interior is beautiful as well. It has excellent upholstery, carpet, dashboard and door panels with no cracks, rips or tears or any significant signs of wear. The car doesn‘t have any smokers smell. In fact, it’s not even equipped with a lighter. The cargo area looks like it was hardly ever used and the engine compartment has been fully detailed and is clean enough to eat off of.

Mechanically it runs and drives excellent. The engine and transmission pulls strong and yet feels silky smooth both at idle, while accelerating and throughout the cruising range. The steering wheel is on dead center going down the road with no shakes or vibrations at speed, the brakes are firm with no pedal pulsations or pulling to one side when stopping and the suspension is tight. The A/C blows ice cold. It has a matching set of four ultra high performance Pirelli PZero Nero tires size P225/40ZR18 with good tread all around. I would say they have between a little more than half to a little less than half their tread left. These tires have an ultra high performance tread design combined with a silica-enhanced tread compound for exceptional all-season wet/dry traction, excellent handling and a comfortable ride. They have been balanced with coated stick-on balance weights mounted on the inside of the wheel for a super clean look. These weights won’t corrode and turn ugly like cheap uncoated weights. The spare tire and jack doesn’t look like they have ever been used.

The car has been fully checked out and serviced with over $2,800 worth of new or recent parts, maintenance and repairs with original Volkswagen or other name brand parts so that only your enjoyment rather than your immediate attention will be required on delivery. Some of the items checked or serviced include:

  • New Mobil 1 oil change
  • New Volkswagen oil filter
  • New Volkswagen air filter
  • New Mann cabin air filter
  • New throttle body cleaning
  • New MAF sensor cleaning
  • New Volkswagen fuel filter

2010 is the first year of the new redesigned bodystyle MK6 GTI and is the best value since it’s nearly identical to a new 2013 model you can buy at a VW dealer, but being three model years old, the majority of the depreciation has been absorbed by the previous owner, yet the car still looks and runs like new. Since the ’10 GTI was the first year of the new bodystyle, it’s the oldest, and thus, the least expensive model MK6 you can buy. What that means is you can own a car with the looks, style and prestige of a brand new GTI for a fraction of the cost. In fact, because of the above average mileage, this GTI may be the cheapest one you will find until a few years of depreciation have reduced the prices of other GTIs to the level of this one. It could be a while before that happens, so if you’ve always wanted a MK6 GTI but thought you didn’t quite have enough funds to purchase one, this car may just have your name on it. In other words, it’s going to take a year or two before the lower mileage 2010 GTIs that are advertised now for $18,000 to $22,000 depreciate down to the price of this GTI. So why wait that long? In a year or two their prices will be the same as this one is right now anyway, so you might as well own and enjoy it now! In fact, the price of this MK6 GTI is less than what some previous generation MKV models are selling for!

Another thing to remember if you have been looking at cars in the 40-80,000 mile range is they wont have all the servicing this one has had. Items like valve cleaning, fuel injector cleaning, spark plugs, etc. that this car has had will be required on a 60,000 mile car sooner or later. This car runs as well as a 10,000 mile car because of all the mentioned work done, while a 60,000 mile car will run like a 60,000 mile car and soon will need all the servicing my car has already had.

The cost new of this GTI was nearly $28,000! CLICK HERE to see the original pricing. But because it was a hot new model, most dealers were adding additional market adjustment markups (read rip off), so with tax, title and tags, you were lucky if you got ANY change back from your $30,000 bill!

The NADA Blue Book value for the car even with the higher mileage is almost $18,000. CLICK HERE to see the Blue Book. I have the Buy It Now Price nearly $3,000 below that. This is a one owner southern car from Maryland which is probably why it’s so clean. CLICK HERE to see the title, and it has a clean Carfax. CLICK HERE to see the Carfax report I ran after buying it.

The car comes with two remote keys and the wheel lock key:

If you are serious about buying a MK6 GTI in general, and a 2-door DSG® model specifically, this is about as low as they go because of the higher mileage. Remember, you can get a great deal on Ebay with prices sometimes way below retail, but no bidder is going to “steal” a vehicle and no seller is going to give one away either. Also when comparing prices, remember the things that you won’t have to spend money on soon after getting it home. With this car you won’t have to spend $800 for a new set of tires, you won’t have to spend $800 on a valve cleaning service, you won’t have to spend $400 on a complete front brake service, you won’t have to spend $300 on a complete rear brake service and you won’t have to spend $300 on a tune-up and filters service. With many of the other listings on Ebay, you’re lucky if they even check the oil before delivery. Also, when comparing this GTI to the others listed, check if they come with both remote keys because a new one from the dealer, with programming, is going to cost you $250. And if you lost that only key, it’ll cost three times as much to replace the security module.

While most dealers just buy a car to flip in a week or two, I bought this car at a dealer auction more than a year ago to use as one of my personal drivers which is why I serviced it top to bottom. And I’m also passing on the savings in this Ebay auction. If instead of selling it back at a dealer auction I can sell it here on Ebay for a similar price and avoid dealer auction fees and transportation expenses, and the new owner gets the car at a true wholesale price, then both buyer and seller make out ahead. So there is no point in making lowball $12,000 or $13,000 offers.

If you are looking for an all original MK6 GTI in beautiful condition at a low price, then this car is hard to beat. It’s the lowest priced MK6 GTI under 100,000 miles on Ebay in terms of the Buy It Now price or classified ad price, (excluding salvage or damaged cars of course), and that doesn’t even take into account the extensive servicing the car has had. It is bone stock unlike many of these GTI’s out there that are extensively modified with sometimes questionable mods, both in terms of quality and taste. So whether you like your car all original like this one is, or like to modify it correctly, this car is the blank canvas you can start with knowing you won’t have to correct another persons mistakes or poor taste. Also remember that we don’t charge dealer processing fees or document fees that many other listings have for $200 or more and bury in their fine print. And don’t be fooled by some other auctions that are advertised as NO RESERVE and start at $100 or some other low price. Since no dealer is going to risk losing thousands of dollars if their auction doesn’t bring enough money, you can be pretty sure he has some “people” bidding on it for him. Especially those auctions that are private listings where it says “User ID kept private.” Also, because my reserve is close to the Buy It Now price, don’t think that you will get a much better deal if you just keep bidding it up instead of using B.I.N., especially if you need it delivered.

TERMS OF THE AUCTION ARE AS FOLLOWS: Since this car may be advertised locally, auction can be canceled at any time (unless auction ended early with BUY IT NOW) due to prior sale without liability to any bidder. A down payment of $500 (plus any additional delivery charge) is required within 3 days of the close of the auction, balance due in cash on delivery or certified funds on delivery if I deliver it or you pick it up, or before it’s dropped off at the transporter if a shipping company is transporting it, but no later than 7 days after the close of the auction without prior agreement. I accept bank or certified checks, money orders, credit cards through PayPal (accepted for down payment only). If paying balance with funds other than cash, buyer to fax copy of monetary instrument no less than 24 hours before picking up vehicle.

The car is sold as is. Buyer is welcome to inspect car BEFORE the end of the auction or to have someone check it out on your behalf provided you authorize whoever is checking the car to provide me with a copy of the results. I have tried to accurately describe this car, both mechanically and cosmetically but you can expect a certain amount of minor flaws on ANY used car including squeaks, rattles, drips, nicks, chips, scratches, blemishes and any other marks that are consistent with the age and mileage of the vehicle. There is no possible way to include all minute details and imperfections, however, I believe my listing accurately depicts this vehicle and if there are any issues they are noted in the description. Also remember that a vehicle is made up of thousands of mechanical parts and components and in an older or higher mileage used vehicle a part that is working fine now may go bad the next day, in a week, or a month from now. It’s nearly impossible to tell when a particular part or component will fail as most don’t exhibit prior symptoms, however, proper preventative maintenance as this car has received, can prevent most problems or breakdowns from happening.

In fairness to all bidders the reserve price will not be disclosed so please don’t even ask.

Buyer responsible for transportation and car must be paid for in full before it can be released. May deliver. Email or call for delivery quote or for any other questions. atikovi@email.com Maryland and District of Columbia dealer. Phone 202-246-5201. Please do not bid if you don’t intend to buy.

FREE DELIVERY TERMS: Free delivery within 500 miles of the Washington DC area if bidder purchases vehicle with Buy It Now. (35 cents per mile for additional miles as shown in MapQuest.com from zip code 20001 to your address.) That is still the same rate as when I started on Ebay 14 years ago even with more than double the gas prices. Remember, the Buy It Now option disappears once the reserve price is met. The Buy It Now price is $14,995.

AUCTION ENDS: 10:00pm sharp, EASTERN TIME Monday January 13th unless Buy It Now is used.

Porsche 911 with VW turbodiesel prepares for LeMons assault

Fri, 21 Mar 2014

LeMons racing is a wonderful example that setting limits can actually breed creativity. The series mandates that all entries must cost $500, not counting safety equipment, and that cap forces teams to be ingenious in how they build a racecar. Take for example this diesel-powered Porsche 911, which its creators have dubbed Ferkel the Nein-11, that will be racing in the Sears Pointless race this weekend in Sonoma, California.
This Frankenstein combines a 911 chassis that was originally bought just for its European powertrain and a Volkswagen TDI diesel engine mounted in the rear. After deciding the shell could still be of some use, the team decided to go racing. "We began brainstorming what replacement drivetrain to use for maximum offense and there was really only one answer: a diesel," said Philipp von Weitershausen, one of the team captains, to Jalopnik. They bought a 1998 Jetta TDI on the cheap and started figuring out a way to hack the engine into the bay. To pay respect to the donor, the VW's trunk was highly modified (and drilled) and grafted onto the back of Ferkel.
This team isn't a newcomer to LeMons. Its last car was a classic VW Beetle with a Subaru engine and dual controls, named Ferdinand the Bug, which could be driven from the left or right side. It's quite a sight.

Prop-driven VW Beetle hopes to land in Bonneville [w/video]

Thu, 10 Jan 2013

Sometimes you meet folks who, when they tell you "Hey, I have an idea," your reflex response is to stop what you're doing and tell yourself, "Get ready...." We imagine Mike Niemans is one of those folks, and the idea in question is putting a tank engine on a Type 1 Volkswagen Beetle. Not just any old tank engine - as if there were such a thing when we're talking about putting them in cars - but a 668-cubic-inch, 220-horsepower radial engine built by Continental in 1941 and procured from an M2 tank.
In the image above Nieman is using the tank clutch hub to get the motor set up, but in one of the images below you can see what really belongs back there is: a two-inch, reverse-pitch prop taken from a wind generator. He says there's enough mojo with the propeller action to get the car rolling down the runway like a jet when he gives it gas - and speaking of gas, the engine's been refitted to run on propane.
After a few safety tweaks Nieman's going to take the matte-black Beetle to Bonneville, "put the prop on, let her go and see what happens!" We can't wait to see the video of that. There are two shakedown videos below to get you ready.

Next VW GTI to get 10-speed dual-clutch gearbox

Wed, Nov 26 2014

Following on Volkswagen's official announcement that it was working on a ten-speed, dual-clutch transmission, Auto Express has it on "good authority" that the new transmission will end up in the next GTI, GTD and Golf R. The brand's current seven-speed will be retained for lesser eight-generation Golfs. While the new gearbox won't be limited to just the higher-end Golf range, the new hatchback, expected in 2017, will be the first to get it, Auto Express reports. The new DSG is the same size as the Volkswagen Group's seven-speed dual-clutch, and will easily fit into VAG's MQB platform, so we should expect it to filter into the rest of the Group's vehicles, much like the seven-speed 'box has. The ten-speed is likely to see applications beyond even the small cars of the MQB platform. The gearbox can handle 405 pound-feet of torque, according to AE, making its application in larger offerings such as the gas-powered MLB cars and crossovers a likelihood. Beyond the new gearbox, Volkswagen is also toying with mild-hybrid tech for the standard Golf and better batteries for the e-Golf. As we said, expect the new Golf to arrive in European markets in 2017, with the current Euro-market Golf getting updated next year. As for the US, we wouldn't be surprised if VW followed the trail blazed by the Mark 7, with a North American arrival for the eight-gem Golf slated for a year or so after sales in Europe begin.
