2003 Volkswagen 20th Anniversary Edition Gti - Jazz Blue Frankenturbo Conversion on 2040-cars
Chesapeake, Virginia, United States
2003 20th Anniversary GTI, Jazz Blue, #2395 of 4000 20ths produced, 1 of 1,000 in Jazz Blue
195,XXXmi. on odometer, 84,000 on rebuilt engine, 23,000mi. on rebuilt transmission/new clutch. VW 1.8T (turbo) engine and 6 speed manual gearbox. All receipts/records included with sale. Car is in excellent mechanical condition, owned by a 45 year old, well-seasoned technician. I purchased this car in November of 2010 at 177,740mi. I just had to have a Jazz Blue 20th! The car was in need of some TLC and I've done my best to restore/upgrade/maintain this vehicle to an outstanding mechanical condition while improving the overall cosmetic condition, inside and out. To my knowledge car has had NO accident damage, nor are any repainted panels evident. I've performed extensive upgrades/modifications to the vehicle for purposes of reliability, performance and handling. I own/operate a private shop that specializes in German performance, more specifically Porsche race cars. This car has been one of many projects of mine in the last three years. I can honestly say, this car has been one of the most reliable, funnest daily drivers I've ever owned. The hatchback is incredibly convenient and it's tough to beat the styling, performance and practicality of the MKIV GTI. I enjoy a solid 23MPG City/28MPG HWY, while boasting ~270HP via a THOROUGH Frankenturbo F4T conversion. In November, we used the vehicle to drive down to Gainesville, Florida and back. It was a comfortable drive, the power was super handy (#&$*^% semi-truck drivers!!) and we averaged 26-27MPG with some city driving. The round trip alone was a solid 22hrs. of seat time and we went all over the place while we were down there. It was fun to have my daily driver that far from home, knowing how reliable it's been. That was the 2nd of two road trips I've ever taken in the car, as I'm usually driving a diesel rig w/trailer when I travel. VEHICLE BASICS: Purchased at 177,740mi., currently at 195,358mi. Engine rebuilt @111,XXXmi., Transmission rebuilt / NEW clutch at 172,XXXmi. Factory Rated @180HP, currently ~270HP via upgraded turbo package/software/exhaust. Power Steering, Brakes, Windows, Doorlocks, keyless entry (TWO WORKING KEY$!!) Air Conditioning, Cruise Control, AM/FM/CD w/6CD Changer (Factory), Factory Alarm. R32 Body Styling with 20th AE Specific front/rear bumper covers, hatch spoiler, rocker panels and headlights. Factory 18" "Aristo" Aluminum Wheels, Factory RED Calipers (same as on Audi TT) EXTERIOR: 1 of 1,000 in Jazz Blue, factory paint, NO accidents or paintwork evident. Tint recently redone 100% by Atlantic Shoreline, Va. Beach - Va. Legal, 50% door / 35% sides and rear. Factory 18" Aristo sport wheels, in EXCELLENT condition...tires less than 1 year/~3,000mi. old. Front fender liners are NEW, right side is the Audi TT version w/vents for intercooler. Some dings in hood, driver door and major scratch on passenger door window frame, NO rust. Paint is 100% intact, w/no obvious fading and continues to wax/shine very well. INTERIOR: VERY clean and in great condition. ALL the 20th Anniversary "Perks" unique to the 20th AE intact and in great condition. Recaro Sport Seats w/embroidered script, large bolsters, unique/durable seat material - normal wear. Aluminum trim, in great condition with original serial# badge on dash/radio surround. 20th AE seat belts, shift knob / steering wheel, center console (factory armrest delete), etc. Factory VW "Monsoon" Stereo system, AM/FM/CD w/CD Changer and Amplifier in stock location, rear hatch side compartment. Door / quarter panels were recently reupholstered by Nick's Upholstery (Va. Beach) NEW glove box door, factory VW part - if you know your VWs, you know this IS a common issue. VW Factory "Monster" heavy duty floor mats, front/rear in excellent cond. Newsouth Performance Boost Gauge, matches interior styling, Indiglo Lighting matches dash display. ENGINE: Four cylinder 1.8T, rebuilt by Greenbrier VW @111K mi. Engine runs VERY well with approx. 84K mi. since rebuild, NO CODES/NO CELS Dealership replaced all coil packs via recall, September 2010. Timing Belt / Water Pump (w/steel impeller) service, November 2010 (shortly after purchase) All coolant hoses, knock sensors and CTS (coolant temp. sensor) replaced in the last year. New engine mount, transmission mount in the last 3 months. Autotech Cold Air Intake with 3" composite tube, 3" Audi TT MAF housing, new MAF sensor. FrankenTurbo Silicone TIP clamped to a FrankenTurbo F4T (Modified K04) Turbo. (kit is 1.5yrs old) Entire boost system plumbed with Samco Silicone hoses and stainless HD/T-bar clamps throughout. Forge Side Mount Intercooler (SMIC), new boost sensor, factory Throttle Body (new IAT) Overboost controlled by Boost Inc. Manual Boost Controller and Forge Diverter Valve... Exhaust/Turbo Manifold is a larger ceramic coated unit, manufactured for FrankenTurbo Power exits via an Autotech 3" Stainless Down Pipe, factory converter & Autotech 2.5" Stainless Sport Exhaust with polished Stainless Tip...nice "low key" sound. Engine compartment has been partially "shaved" via removal of factory air and battery boxes. Factory (CARB) air pump system removed/deleted via software. Fuel delivery via a Genesis high-volume Fuel Pump and Seimens 440lb Injectors. This has proven to be a VERY reliable setup and it produces a solid 26psi. of boost ALL DAY. The Frankenturbo setup and related upgrades have turned an otherwise "blah" daily driver into one hell of a fun car that yields great gas mileage! FrankenTurbo is an awesome, grassroots company, mainly focused on VW 1.8T/2.0T platforms, Doug (the Owner) offers great customer support and is constantly researching data via his customers. Performance package topped off with a custom tune by C2 Tuning, via Ben Gilman, Newport News (affiliated with Volks & Rings VW/Audi Specialists) ALL tuning accompanied by a VAGCOM analyzer, very important, most owners who "modify" their VW don't even bother with this. TRANSMISSION: Rebuilt by AAMCO Transmissions, Chesapeake, Va. September 2010, just prior to purchase. - as funny as this sounds, the "local VW expert" was currently working at AAMCO. This was a $2,500 rebuild and the clutch was replaced with a complete SACHS disk/press.plate at the same time. Shortly after purchase, I changed the transmission lube to Redline 75W/90 "NS", and it's been a flawless relationship. CV Axles are VERY expensive for a 6spd. MKIV, shortly after purchase, I removed & stripped down both axles, rebuilt with Redline CV grease, using new boots/clamps, axles torqued to specifications with new inner bolts/outer axle to hub bolts. SUSPENSION: When I purchased the car, it was in need of ALL suspension bushing replacement. Shocks were replaced with new Bilstein "Sport" units, using a new set of H&R Sport/Lowering Springs. This lowered the car another 1.2" and added a nice look to an already factory lowered vehicle. All shock mounts, strut tops, bearings and seals were replaced at that time. Ball Joints, Wheel Bearings, Control Arms (R32 bushings), Dog Bone/Motor/Trans. Mounts (recent) - all replaced. Rear support axle was rebuilt about a year after purchasing vehicle, using new factory VW bushings. Less than a year ago, the factory 18" "Aristo" wheels were stripped down and reconditioned by Auto Elite, Va. Beach. Tires were replaced at the same time the wheels were restored with Kumho ECSTA4 All Season Performance, there is ~3K mi. on the tires. This car is an absolute blast to corner-carve with. BRAKES: RED calipers, as delivered from VW on Audi TT, VW 337 and 20th AE GTI models Front pads were replaced about two years ago and have plenty of pad remaining, rear pads are NEW. Front rotors were replaced with ECS vented/slotted performance disks when front pads were changed. Rear brake (hard) lines were replaced about a year ago, with factory lines, when one of them started leaking. I cannot emphasize enough how the performance modifications, coupled with the slew of NEW parts on this vehicle make it a realiable, attractive and FUN vehicle to drive, with great mileage to boot! I've got well over my asking price wrapped up in this gem and it's a solid, performance inspired daily driver. It's also the least expensive 20th AE available on the East Coast, and undoubtedly the most mechanically sound. I challenge you to find another 20th AE GTI in like mechanical condition with similar upgrades. PLEASE DO NOT contact me with a bunch of B.S. regarding "Blue Book Value" and such...if you're looking for a 20th AE GTI, you know they come at a premium. It's not even remotely possible to duplicate this vehicle for anywhere near the asking price - it's tastefully modded, body/interior/wheels are FACTORY ORIGINAL. Any mechanical/performance/suspension/exhaust modifications can be easily reversed if you prefer a 100% "stock" vehicle, but who does? If you find yourself "troubled" over the 195K mi. on the odometer - get over it. It's a modern German performance vehicle, with rebuilt transmission (172K mi.) and rebuilt engine due to timing belt failure (prev. owner @111K mi.) The suspension has been replaced, brakes have been serviced (even replaced the lines), the interior is NOT falling apart like EVERY 20th AE out there (unless it's been reupholstered like this one) and the wheels/tires appear as if they're right out of the box. There is NOTHING that will REQUIRE you to spend any significant amount of $$$$$$$$ if you purchase this vehicle. It has been my trusty daily driver/project car for 3.5 years this month, I've simply moved on with a new daily driver. Vehicle has a FRESH detail, inside and out by a professional, recent oil/filter change, using Motul Synthetic (always), new Bosch Icon (bracketless) type wiper blade assemblies and new rear Pagid "Premium" brake pads. Some of the original parts related to this vehicle will be included with sale - I.E.: Engine Cover, Battery Box, Air Box, etc. I am very flexible with regards to transporting of vehicle. I can transport via personal diesel truck/enclosed trailer within a 300mi. radius for a reasonable fee to cover my expenses -or- can meet for exchange of vehicle. I am NOT looking for trades, a partial trade is possible but I'm mainly looking to CA$H OUT as I have a new daily driver. Vehicle is located in Chesapeake, Va. in a VERY convenient location, a straight 4mi. shot off I-64, Greenbrier exit. |

Translogic 164: Driving the fuel cell vehicles of the 2014 LA Auto Show
Wed, Nov 26 2014The LA Auto Show is known for its environmentally friendly vehicle debuts. At last year's show, hydrogen fuel cell concepts from Honda and Toyota joined a lease-ready Hyundai Tucson FCEV to cast a green hue over the convention center. This year, automakers took us a step closer to a fuel cell future by offering drives of their hydrogen-electric hybrids. Translogic host Jonathon Buckley takes a ride in the Toyota Mirai, which is headed for production in 2016. He follows that with a spin in the Volkswagen Passat HyMotion and the Audi A7 Sportback h-tron quattro concept. Which of these fuel cell vehicles holds the most promise? Tune in to find out. Volkswagen says goodbye to Eos, Routan in 2015 updates
Wed, Jul 23 2014Usually automakers announce changes to their lineup individually on a vehicle-by-vehicle basis, but sometimes it all comes at once – especially when the changes are ones we either expected or might not otherwise notice. That's the path Volkswagen has gone with changes to its US lineup for 2015. The biggest change is what we already knew: that the new Golf arrives for the 2015 model year, bringing with it the new GTI, Golf R, e-Golf and Golf SportWagen (to replace the previous Jetta wagon). But there are some new details as well. For starters, Volkswagen has finally confirmed that both the Eos and the Routan – both long rumored to be on their way out – will be exiting this year. The Eos hardtop convertible, pictured above, will linger for one last year, its Sport trim replaced by a new Final Edition with 18-inch wheels, two-tone leather interior and enhanced equipment. Meanwhile the Routan, which hasn't actually been built in over a year, is finally dead, as VW confirms it has dropped the Chrysler-built minivan from its lineup for 2015 altogether. The German automaker has also confirmed that the Touareg is getting a facelift early in the new year, which we expect will closely follow the revisions revealed a few months ago ahead of the Beijing Motor Show. Finally VW has announced an upgrade to its 2.0-liter TDI. Fitted to the Golf, Jetta, Passat and Beetle, the updated diesel gets 10 more horsepower with output now up to 150 hp and 236 pound-feet of torque. Scope out the full list of announcements in the press release below. MODEL YEAR 2015: NEW GOLF FAMILY, REDESIGNED JETTA, AND NEW TDI® CLEAN DIESEL ENGINE HEAD THE CHANGES Jul 22, 2014 In a busy year, Volkswagen will also add a new Golf SportWagen, an all-new Golf R, a redesigned Touareg SUV, and the company's first U.S.-market EV, the e-Golf - All-new Golf is bigger, lighter, and more fuel-efficient than the previous model, seats five, and has a larger trunk than any midsize sedan - New Golf GTI has 210-horsepower engine, with improved fuel efficiency and performance - e-Golf is Volkswagen's first full Battery Electric Vehicle for sale in the U.S.
