Super Nice 1989 Volkswagen Vanagon on 2040-cars

Year:1989 Mileage:164000

I am selling my dream van. I am the 3rd owner of this 1989. I bought it from my friend in the summer of 2002. He had it about 4 years. It has been a good vehicle and a better friend. My wife is in her master's degree and it really has to go.

Goods:
The entire drive train. I had this engine rebuilt in August of 2008 and it has never been seriously driven since. I drive it to Sonic with my kids on Sunday. I camped in it once this year. It has been a commuter when my other car is in the shop or will not start. The rebuild in 08 included:

a fuse panel
all the exhaust
a/c receiver/dryer
main, thrust, rod, cam, and gasket sets
exhaust valves
oil and water pump,
new backdoor hydraulics
spark plugs
thermostat
intake hoses
muffler
brake shoes
filters, belts
radiator flush
speedometer
lug wrench replacement
missing wheel centers

The work was done by a local guru who spent his life as a VW tech and retired. He has a collection of vans he pulls from, so many of the parts were from those. The labor and the parts were over $4,000 then.

Since 2008 I have replaced the tires, gas pedal wire to the engine. Once the OEM unit went bad and the van wouldn't respond to a thing. I replaced the load-bearing ICs in the unit and it works great. I replaced the starter and modified the hot wire connection to a better, less ridiculously German one. The transmission was rebuilt before the engine around 05 or 06. It has been perfect ever since. I bought new tires in 08 and they look good still. The tread looks really good. You can see how little I've driven on those tires. The new speedometer had around 149,000 on it when I got it back. Thats 15,000 miles in 6 years! The interior is clean and in good condition. The power windows work fine on the front. The power mirrors do too. It looks like a van that has been used and cared for for 25 years. I have the engine rebuild receipts, the owners manual, the lug wrench, jack, fire extenguisher, cig lighter, and headrests. Table works, back gate still works. He also fixed an issue where the brake shoes wear out quickly on the 89s and 90s.

The bads:
Some of the small electronics. The locks on these vans don't work if there is a short in a cable, and I've never had time to trace it down. The locks do not work. The CD player was stolen last year because of that. The horn and the cruise control slowly faded away in the first years I owned it. The front heater fan doesn't work, but the fan in the back does and front still blows while you are moving. The AC worked in 08 and 09, but then fizzled. The tech that did the work said he re-fills his ac at least once a year to keep it cold. No guarantees, but it should just need a recharging. The reverse lights do not work. They were staying on all the time and I got a ticket for it, the tech couldn't figure it out, so we separated the leads from the fixture. There is one rip in the back passenger bench. Finally, the front window is chipped and when I went to the glass place to get it repaired, they just broke it further.

This is a super solid van. We just spend our rent on a master's degree payment, so this has to go. I will try to answer all your questions the best I can.

You will need to pick the van up in Chattanooga TN. I will not meet elsewhere. It already has a Moog Music and APPLE sticker, so you won't have to worry about those.

Volkswagen and Porsche recall Touareg and Cayenne

Thu, Mar 24 2016

The Basics: Volkswagen and Porsche will recall about 800,000 units worldwide of the 2011-2016 Touareg and Cayenne, according to Reuters. Of these, there are 88,300 Cayennes and 46,700 Touaregs in the US. The Problem: A securing clip on the brake pedal hinge could be missing. This can cause the pedal pivot pin to move, and "the pedal could lose guidance," according to Volkswagen's statement. Over time, the problem might cause the pedal hinge to fracture, which could make it impossible to activate the brakes. Injuries/Deaths: Porsche's statement says, "this is a purely precautionary measure, as there have been no reports of accidents or injuries as a result of this concern." Volkswagen's statement reports, "no incidents have occurred in the US to date. However, single events have been reported overseas." The Fix: Dealers will inspect the clip and reinstall it if necessary. If you own one: Porsche says it discovered the problem during internal inspections. Related Video: PORSCHE EXAMINES CAYENNE MODELS AS A PREVENTATIVE MEASURE Inspection of pedal hinge clip Atlanta, Georgia. Voluntary safety recall: Porsche is conducting an examination of 409,477 Cayenne models worldwide from model years 2011 to 2016 for a precautionary inspection, of which 88,300 are in the United States and 10,370 are in Canada. The reason for this is a clip may have become dislodged from the pedal bracket. We are implementing a voluntary recall to inspect all Cayenne vehicles built during that period to ensure the clip is present and to re-install it if necessary. The problem was identified during internal inspections and remedied in production. This is a purely precautionary measure, as there have been no reports of accidents or injuries as a result of this concern. ### Volkswagen Statement Volkswagen has notified NHTSA of an upcoming voluntary safety recall affecting approximately 46,700 Volkswagen Touareg vehicles from the 2011-2016 model years. In rare cases, a securing clip at the brake pedal hinge may be missing. If the clip is missing, the pedal pivot pin could start to move and the pedal could lose guidance. If this remains undiscovered, the pedal hinge could fracture after continued operation, allowing the pedal to dislodge. A customer may not be able to properly actuate the brakes with a dislodged brake pedal. A non-functional brake or reduced braking power could result in a crash. No incidents have occurred in the U.S. to date.

VW recalling all its diesels in Australia

Mon, Oct 12 2015

VW's Australian division has announced it will recall all of its diesel vehicles that are believed to be programmed to cheat government emissions-testing process, Reuters says. VW Australia will recall almost 100,000 cars as a result. About two-thirds of the vehicles to be recalled in Australia will be Volkswagen-branded light-duty vehicles, while about 17,000 will be commercial vehicles. About 5,000 vehicles will be Skodas. New VW CEO Matthias Muller (former chief Martin Winterkorn stepped down towards the beginning of the diesel scandal) said last week that VW recalls in Europe would start in January, with all cars slated to be "fixed" by the end of next year. As for US VWs, any massive recall of the nearly half-million affected diesels here will be difficult to make work. VW is still figuring out how to deal with the 2016 model-year diesels, which are new a few months away from seeing the light of day because of the brouhaha. The company has been forced to resubmit those diesels to the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for more testing. Back in Germany, local investigators have searched Volkswagen's headquarters in Wolfsburg for more information on the so-called "defeat device" software built into VW's diesel engines. Volkswagen has set aside $7.3 billion to deal with the fallout from the scandal after estimating that as many as 11 million of its diesel-powered worldwide vehicles use software that essentially games emissions tests system. Without this cheater software, VW's diesels perform worse when they follow emissions regulations. Related Videos: News Source: ReutersImage Credit: Paul J. Recharge Wrap-up: Tesla Model S full speed, Pheonix EVs at LAX

Fri, Jun 5 2015

A Tesla Model S driver shows what it's like to maintain about 125 miles per hour on the German Autobahn. In the video, Bjorn Nyland records his trip from a stop at a Supercharger 25 miles to the Danish border while driving about 200 kph for about 12 minutes. Upon entering the Autobahn, he hits the limiter at about 212 kph, or almost 132 mph. As he's driving, the car's estimated driving range adjusts for his speed, and he quickly loses quite a few miles. He doesn't care, though. He's having fun. See the video above, and read more at Inside EVs. Phoenix Cars has provided an Electric Shuttle Bus to an airport parking company at the Los Angeles International Airport. As LAX's first electric shuttle bus, it is expected to run two shifts seven days a week, saving more than 60 tons of CO2 emissions yearly. The electric shuttle bus will be on display from June 29 to July 2 at the International Parking Institute Conference and Expo in Las Vegas. Phoenix also recently supplied its ZEUS electric flatbed to the US Navy. Read more in the press release below. Ballard will operate a fleet of eight hydrogen-powered buses in London for an additional five years. Transport for London uses the buses, powered by Ballard fuel cell technology, for its central Covent Garden-Tower Gateway route. The first five buses went into service in 2010 as Transport for London aimed to reduce CO2 emissions by 60 percent from 1990 levels by 2025. The three additional buses joined the fleet in 2013. "This contract extension is a positive endorsement of zero-emission fuel cell technology in transit applications, based on the demonstrated performance of these buses over the past five years," says Ballard Chief Commercial Officer Steve Karaffa. "Clean transportation is a growing concern for transit authorities globally and our fuel cell modules deliver a proven solution." Read more from Ballard. Volkswagen and SAIC are expanding electric vehicle operations in China. The partners will expand the main Shanghai Volkswagen plant to build electric vehicles. "Over the next four years, we plan to localize more than 15 different electric vehicle models in China, including plug-in hybrids and fully electric vehicles," says Volkswagen's Prof. Dr. Jochem Heizmann. Volkswagen will also step up fuel cell and plug-in hybrid research in China. In about four years, Volkswagen will build a new EV, based on the popular Lavida, at the Anting plant outside of Shanghai.
