Super Nice 1989 Volkswagen Vanagon on 2040-cars

Year:1989 Mileage:164000
Location:

Chattanooga, Tennessee, United States

Chattanooga, Tennessee, United States

I am selling my dream van. I am the 3rd owner of this 1989. I bought it from my friend in the summer of 2002. He had it about 4 years. It has been a good vehicle and a better friend. My wife is in her master's degree and it really has to go.

Goods:
The entire drive train. I had this engine rebuilt in August of 2008 and it has never been seriously driven since. I drive it to Sonic with my kids on Sunday. I camped in it once this year. It has been a commuter when my other car is in the shop or will not start. The rebuild in 08 included:

a fuse panel
all the exhaust
a/c receiver/dryer
main, thrust, rod, cam, and gasket sets
exhaust valves
oil and water pump,
new backdoor hydraulics
spark plugs
thermostat
intake hoses
muffler
brake shoes
filters, belts
radiator flush
speedometer
lug wrench replacement
missing wheel centers

The work was done by a local guru who spent his life as a VW tech and retired. He has a collection of vans he pulls from, so many of the parts were from those. The labor and the parts were over $4,000 then.

Since 2008 I have replaced the tires, gas pedal wire to the engine. Once the OEM unit went bad and the van wouldn't respond to a thing. I replaced the load-bearing ICs in the unit and it works great. I replaced the starter and modified the hot wire connection to a better, less ridiculously German one. The transmission was rebuilt before the engine around 05 or 06. It has been perfect ever since. I bought new tires in 08 and they look good still. The tread looks really good. You can see how little I've driven on those tires. The new speedometer had around 149,000 on it when I got it back. Thats 15,000 miles in 6 years! The interior is clean and in good condition. The power windows work fine on the front. The power mirrors do too. It looks like a van that has been used and cared for for 25 years. I have the engine rebuild receipts, the owners manual, the lug wrench, jack, fire extenguisher, cig lighter, and headrests. Table works, back gate still works. He also fixed an issue where the brake shoes wear out quickly on the 89s and 90s.

The bads:
Some of the small electronics. The locks on these vans don't work if there is a short in a cable, and I've never had time to trace it down. The locks do not work. The CD player was stolen last year because of that. The horn and the cruise control slowly faded away in the first years I owned it. The front heater fan doesn't work, but the fan in the back does and front still blows while you are moving. The AC worked in 08 and 09, but then fizzled. The tech that did the work said he re-fills his ac at least once a year to keep it cold. No guarantees, but it should just need a recharging. The reverse lights do not work. They were staying on all the time and I got a ticket for it, the tech couldn't figure it out, so we separated the leads from the fixture. There is one rip in the back passenger bench. Finally, the front window is chipped and when I went to the glass place to get it repaired, they just broke it further.

This is a super solid van. We just spend our rent on a master's degree payment, so this has to go. I will try to answer all your questions the best I can.

You will need to pick the van up in Chattanooga TN. I will not meet elsewhere. It already has a Moog Music and APPLE sticker, so you won't have to worry about those.

Volkswagen E-Co-Motion Concept brings electric mobility to the commercial set

Wed, 06 Mar 2013

Volkswagen sees a future where the bulk of the world's freight is moved into city centers by train, then offloaded onto a fleet of smaller, light-duty commercial vehicles for final delivery. Those vehicles could wind up looking something like the company's E-Co-Motion Concept that debuted at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show. The EV features a modular underfloor drive unit comprised of a battery, motor and gearbox that can be paired with any number of cab and body configurations to suit a buyer's needs, from a refrigerated box to a standard flat bed.
The E-Co-Motion Concept features a rear-mounted electric motor with 113 horsepower and 199 pound-feet of torque. A standard 20 kWh battery pack provides a driving range of up to 62 miles, while 30 kWh and 40 kWh packs could deliver 93 and 124 miles of travel, respectively. Check out the press release below for more information.

My year in EVs: 8 electrics that are changing the car industry

Wed, Dec 1 2021

The year 2021 will go down as an inflection point in the auto industry’s transition to electric vehicles. It's when many much-anticipated models became reality. No longer sketches or sketchy prototypes, electric vehicles appeared from all corners with everything from the Lucid Air to Ford Mustang Mach-E changing how we think about transportation. I managed to drive a lot of them, and as I went through my notes, I realized IÂ’ve got a mini memoir of the seminal EVs of 2021. HereÂ’s my take on eight of them. Hummer EV Easily the most over-the-top EV I tested this year. The 1,000-hp super truck lived up to the hype with its domineering presence, stupendous power and simply being a reincarnated Hummer. I took it for a short spin on- and off-road at the General Motors Proving Grounds in Milford, Mich., and was impressed with the airy cabin, removable sky panels and expansive touchscreens. Yes, I crab walked, which felt like steering a pontoon boat, though I can see why it would be useful. Lucid Air Dream Performance The most beautiful sedan I tested all year, EV or otherwise. Unlike the futuristic Mercedes EQS — which is quite attractive — LucidÂ’s car is a blend of mid-century modern interior aesthetics and classic European exterior styling. When I walked up for my test drive, someone who IÂ’m pretty sure was comedian Jon Lovitz was sitting inside and taking it all in. As it sat in the valet of a hotel in a wealthy suburban enclave north of Detroit, the Lucid drew more attention than any of the Mercedes, Cadillacs or Lexus models passing by. The driving experience was enveloping. Starting at $169,000 for the Performance model (reservations are closed), the Lucid I sampled packed 1,111 hp and 471 miles of range. From the precise steering to the comfortable suspension, the dynamics were spot-on. It's a formidable product, and all the more impressive given itÂ’s LucidÂ’s first. Chevy Bolt EV The Bolt was the most pleasant surprise for me. It handled well, offered low-to-the-ground hot hatch dynamics and the steering was dialed-in. Adding a crossover variant for the new generation was a smart play. On a summer morning where I went to a first drive of the Ford Bronco at an off-road course, my hour-long commute in the Bolt was an enjoyable appetizer.  The Bolt was also my biggest disappointment due to its extensive recalls for fire risk. Ironically, I had the Bolt in my driveway when the initial recall went out for the previous generation (2017-19).

2018 Buick Regal TourX vs. wagon competitors: How it compares on paper

Wed, Jan 31 2018

To the great joy of auto enthusiasts nationwide, wagons are back! Well, at least there's a few more of them. The latest is the 2018 Buick Regal TourX, which we just had our first drive of and found to actually be quite good with pleasant handling, solid power and plenty of space. But, how does the TourX compare to other cladded wagons? Well, let's dive into the specs and fire up the ol' spreadsheet maker for Buick Regal TourX vs Subaru Outback vs Audi A4 Allroad vs VW Alltrack vs Volvo V60 Cross Country. True, some are from mainstream brands and others are from luxury marques, but Buick straddles both realms, so it's appropriate to look at them all. Of course, there's more to these cars than just the numbers, but they're still important, and in the case of this class of crossover-aping wagons, can vary more than you'd expect. So check out the specs in the chart below, which are followed by more analysis and photos of each. Discover and compare other wagons and crossovers with our Car Finder and Compare tools. Engines and Transmissions When comparing powertrains, the Buick is far-and-away the winner as far as torque is concerned, and is in a nearly three-way tie for horsepower. Its 295 pound-feet of torque is 22 lb-ft more twist than the next-most-grunty Audi A4 Allroad. And in regards to power, the Buick's 250-horsepower engine is only down 6 hp to the most-powerful Subaru and its optional naturally aspirated flat-six, and just 2 hp less than the Audi. At the bottom of the pack is the Subaru Outback with the standard naturally aspirated flat-four, which only makes 174 hp and 174 lb-ft of torque. That may not seem too bad compared with the VW Golf Alltrack, which only makes 170 hp and 199 lb-ft of torque, but the VW is much lighter by between 200 and 300 pounds. Transmission-wise, there's quite a bit of variation in the group. The Regal TourX and the Volvo V60 Cross Country rely on eight-speed automatics, all Outbacks use CVTs, and the Alltrack and Allroad have dual-clutch automated manual transmissions with six and seven gears, respectively. But for people that want to shift for themselves, the only option is the Volkswagen, which offers a traditional six-speed manual transmission on the Golf Alltrack. Cargo and Interior Space One of the main reasons to buy a wagon is for the body style's large cargo capacity. And for the most space for things and stuff, you'll want to check out the Subaru and the Buick.
