Presenting this beautifully restored 1974 Volkswagen Camper Van. I am a very

picky buyer picking only the driest of what's still available. I am having to go

further and further to find one of my strict criteria. This one took me 6 months to

find. She was the perfect candidate. When she was found, She had no evidence of

any previous accidents other than a few small of dings and dents

showing her age.

Work invested; The first step was a complete strip down of the entire interior,

Remove the 1800-cc engine. Remove the entire brake system. Strip all hardware

from the outside. Remove all the glass, remove all the doors, Disassemble the

front doors. Any rust found was ground off or cut out and new metal welded in

place. She was then sanded in several levels of grit to remove the original paint in

preparation of a new coat of prime. Final sanding was taken to a smooth 600

before primer was applied. After several coats of Prime she had a final sand of

1000 making her smooth as a babies bottom. Three coats of the highest quality

paint applied in Cream White Inside and out. The base coat was then sanded with

1000. Time for the Clear! 5 Coats of clear was applied over a four day period, Then

left to harden. The final stages where a sanding of 1000 and then a final sanding of

1500 making her shine! The last and final stage was several

passes of heavy compound to bring out that real mirror shine! In all the paint took

20 days from start to finish. The pop top shell and luggage wrack was removed and

painted with three coats of Alpine white. The wheels where sandblasted primed and

painted with three coats of alpine white. The luggage wrack tie downs were

removed sanded and freshened up with 3 new coat of Galvanize to prevent rust.

All new rubbers were installed for the new windshield, side windows, front door side

window wiper rubbers are new, front door seals, side window seals, louver window

seals rear hatch seal, rear window rubber, and engine compartment door seals

have all been replaced new. Even the small bead rubber for the slider cover and

driver side have been replaced. The engine skirt seal is new as well.

The interior was taken to a local seamstress who uses a heavy stitch and thick

vinyl-imitation leather that will last for many years. Nice smooth calming colors

where used in the interior to induce a warm feel that one should have when

enjoying time away from work with the family. It also has that new car smell as a

result of the renovation. The cabinets where carefully gone through and the proper

fasteners and glue where applied to make them as strong as the day they where

new. Then removed the old worn out laminate and restored with beautiful light

colored White Poplar. Then three coats of clear sealer was sprayed on and wet

sanded with a fine grit for a long lasting satin look. She has three 12 volt Power

supplies installed one in the dash one next to the R&R bed and one on the back for

Laptop or Cell phone recharging. Two New Batteries were installed along with a "1",

"2", "All", "Off" four position battery switch for worry free camping. A

new CD Pioneer player with USB and i Pad connect-ability surround system was

installed with four 6" high quality sound system speakers A new Pop-top three

window tent was installed. The front door handles and ignition switch were replaces

new so all the locks work smoothly from inside and out locking the bus completely

except for the slider which locks from the inside. The engine was completely

disassembled. The case and heads where taken to a local machine shop to be

reconditioned. The cylinders where honed and checked for clearances. The rods

and crank where balanced. The Valves where inspected and reseated, New

Rings, Main bearings and Cam bearings were installed. A Hydraulic camshaft and

lifters were installed for super smooth low maintenance operation. With the

hydraulic valve train she idles like a Swiss time piece. All new gaskets and seals

applied. A complete intake and Weiber Progressive carburetor system was

installed. The fuel tank was removed and replaced with a freshly reconditioned

Tank and new filler Hose. New fuel line from the Tank to the carb along with a new

fuel pump was installed for the smoothest and safest fuel delivery. New Bosch

Mechanical advance Distributor and Electronic ignition replacing the out dated

points for easy starting and maintenance free operation. New cap and Rotor where

installed with 7mm solid core plug wires. She starts one crank Cold or

Warm. She sits and purrrs without missing a beat! The Transmission shifts firmly

into all gears and is super easy to find all the gears with the New Bosch

aftermarket shifter and new shift coupler. A new Bosch clutch was installed with a

freshly turned flywheel and pressure plate to ensure smooth clutch operation. The

Brake system was gone through with all the lines and reservoirs completely

flushed. A new master cylinder, shoes and pads installed for easy braking. She

starts, runs drives and brakes very well. 5 New GOODYEAR 185/70R/14 tires

installed all the way around including the spare. The entire electrical

system was gone through to ensure all lights, turn signals, brake, hazard and

reverse lights, dash lights, indicator lights, interior lights All work perfectly. New

light lenses where installed front and rear, New side marker and license plate lights

were installed. The horn even works! The final step took about a week. I crawled

under her with a pressure washer, wire wheel and wire brushes of various sizes

and completely scrubbed and scraped all the old undercoating and any rust found

from the under carriage. I then treated the whole undercarriage with rust

treatment. I then used a spray on rubberized undercoating under the main body

and used truck bed liner coating under the wheel wells for a hard rust free coating

years to come. In all, I put 6 months of my life and a lot of money to restore this

beauty. No expense was spared. This baby has it all!

I take pride in every bus I create. I strive to create the most user friendly

maintenance free best dream bus that anyone would be proud to own.

I can and will ship her WORLD WIDE! I can have her delivered

safely to the loading docks for a small fee.

2013 Volkswagen Beetle Turbo Convertible

Wed, 10 Apr 2013

Less Flower, More Power
Pardon our political incorrectness for a moment, but the Volkswagen New Beetle was, undeniably, a "chick car." There was almost nothing that the New Beetle offered to enthusiasts (of either gender), and by the end of its run, VW had even stripped all of the exciting engines from the car's lineup. Looking to resurrect some of the excitement behind the Beetle, the third generation of the iconic car ditched the cuteness when the coupe debuted for 2012, and now the 2013 Volkswagen Beetle Convertible aims to show how much fun drivers can have without a top.
Celebrating almost six and a half decades of the Beetle convertible, Volkswagen is offering a trio of distinct special editions that celebrate three of the car's most popular decades (the '50s, '60s and '70s), but as one of the unofficial cars of the 1960s, it would almost be a crime not to test this version, right? Besides, this is also the only special edition to get the turbocharged engine. While our first drive of the 2013 Beetle Convertible was in the fuel-miser TDI variation, our two-week romp in the 2013 Beetle Convertible '60s Edition came just as peak convertible weather was kicking off down in Florida.

Brand new cars are being sold with defective Takata airbags

Wed, Jun 1 2016

If you just bought a 2016 Audi TT, 2017 Audi R8, 2016–17 Mitsubishi i-MiEV, or 2016 Volkswagen CC, we have some unsettling news for you. A report provided to a US Senate committee that oversees the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and reported on by Automotive News claims these vehicles were sold with defective Takata airbags. And it gets worse. Toyota and FCA are called out in the report for continuing to build vehicles that will need to be recalled down the line for the same issue. That's not all. The report also states that of the airbags that have been replaced already in the Takata recall campaign, 2.1 million will need to eventually be replaced again. They don't have the drying agent that prevents the degradation of the ammonium nitrate, which can lead to explosions that can destroy the airbag housing and propel metal fragments at occupants. So these airbags are out there already. We're not done yet. There's also a stockpile of about 580,000 airbags waiting to be installed in cars coming in to have their defective airbags replaced. These 580k airbags also don't have the drying agent. They'll need to be replaced down the road, too. A new vehicle with a defective Takata airbag should be safe to drive, but that margin of safety decreases with time. If all this has you spinning around in a frustrated, agitated mess, there's a silver lining that is better than it sounds. So take a breath, run your fingers through your hair, and read on. Our best evidence right now demonstrates that defective Takata airbags – those without the drying agent that prevents humidity from degrading the ammonium nitrate propellant – aren't dangerous yet. It takes a long period of time combined with high humidity for them to reach the point where they can rupture their housing and cause serious injury. It's a matter of years, not days. So a new vehicle with a defective Takata airbag should be safe to drive, but that margin of safety decreases with time – and six years seems to be about as early as the degradation happens in the worst possible scenario. All this is small comfort for the millions of people who just realized their brand-new car has a time bomb installed in the wheel or dashboard, or the owners who waited patiently to have their airbags replaced only to discover that the new airbag is probably defective in the same way (although newer and safer!) as the old one.

Lexus tops JD Power Vehicle Dependability Study again, Buick bests Toyota

Wed, Feb 25 2015

It shouldn't surprise anyone, but Lexus has once again taken the top spot in JD Power's Vehicle Dependability Study. That'd be the Japanese luxury brand's fourth straight year at the top of table. The big news, though, is the rise of Buick. General Motor's near-premium brand beat out Toyota to take second place, with 110 problems per 100 vehicles compared to Toyota's 111 problems. Lexus owners only reported 89 problems per 100 vehicles. Besides Buick's three-position jump, Scion enjoyed a major improvement, jumping 13 positions from 2014. Ram and Mitsubishi made big gains, as well, moving up 11 and 10 positions, respectively. In terms of individual segments, GM and Toyota both excelled, taking home seven segment awards each. The study wasn't good news for all involved, though. A number of popular automakers finished below the industry average of 147 problems per 100 vehicles, including Subaru, (157PP100), Volkswagen (165PP100), Ford/Hyundai (188PP100 each) and Mini (193PP100). The biggest losers (by a tremendous margin, we might add) were Land Rover and Fiat, recording 258 and 273 problems per 100 vehicles. The next closest brand was Jeep, with 197PP100. While the Vehicle Dependability Study uses the same measurement system as the Initial Quality Survey, the two metrics analyze very different things. The VDS looks at problems experienced by original owners of model year 2012 vehicles over the past 12 months, while the oft-quoted IQS focuses on problems in the first 90 days of new-vehicle ownership. Like the IQS, though, the VDS has a rather broad definition of what a problem is. Because of that, a low score from JD Power is no guarantee of extreme unreliability, so much as just poor design. In this most recent study, the two most reported problems focused on Bluetooth connectivity and the voice-command systems. The former leaves plenty of room for user error due to poor design (particularly true of the Bluetooth systems on the low-scoring Fords, Volkswagens and Subarus), while the second is something JD Power has already confirmed as being universally terrible. That makes means that while these studies are important, they shouldn't be taken as gospel when it comes to automotive reliability.
