1984 water cooled fuel injection VW Vanagon Westfalia camper van with pop top. All in great condition, comes with roof racks, heat, 2 burner stove top  & refrigerator in good condition, all tables, sink with water pump, auxiliary battery for camping, spare tire,  fairly new tires, new clutch, fairly new brakes, new thermostat, cooling fan switch, water temp sensor. Upholstery newly redone including all the damaged interior panels, and has a new canvas 3 window pop-top.  Motor runs great, very smooth on the road.  Low mileage, 118,000+, well cared for so I think it will keep on with yearly maintenance.  It has mostly been a CA vehicle that I purchased a few years ago, so very minimal rust, mainly a little around the rear windows.  I really enjoy the vehicle, but I am selling due to recently developed health issues that keep me from enjoying it like I used to do for several years.

Accessories include:

Sink/faucet with electric water pump, refrigerator, two burner stove top. Lots of cabinets, shelves and a closet. Interior and exterior clean and in good condition, as you can see from the pictures. Sleeps up to four people. (The upper bunk under the pop-top is especially nice in the VW Campers.) Two front, swivel chairs with center table.  Rear bench seat that folds down to a double bed. Wider bed under pop-top. Closable screens all-around. Luggage compartment, front, top of vehicle. Outside connections for city water and electricity. Propane tank and filler connection. These campers are known as the, "Swiss Army Knife" of RVs, because there is so much in a manageable space. Probably no other camper drives with the agility and fun, almost like a sports car and better than an SUV.

OPTIONS & ACCESSORIES: Non-Power Windows & Door Locks, Auxiliary battery that automatically separates from vehicle battery when parked, yet charges again when camper is started with primary battery.  This battery powers refrigerator, lights, etc. to be used when not driving.  3 window pop-top Canvas has recently been replaced.  Swivel Table with Swing Bar & Window Screens & Rear Bug Screen, Privacy Curtains.  6 ply truck tires are reasonably new and in great condition with lots of tread and life left.  4 speed manual transmission makes for easy driving and handling and shifts very smoothly and quietly giving the maximum usage of engine power.   Yakima lockable roof rack with 2 bars for surfboards, or kayaks, etc.

The Vanagon Campers were made from 1980 to 1991. The camping aspects of these models, which remained unchanged for those years, are unsurpassed in their utility and efficiency, in providing satisfying and fun camping trips. Being in a VW Camper is like sitting in the observation car on a train, because of the openness of the many windows.

The VW Camper mechanical aspects saw many changes over the years, 1980-1991. The beginning of 1983 was the last year of air cooled engines, and this vehicle is one of the first water cooled VW Vanagons which is a lot better than the air cooled sister vans.  This Camper is for someone who is looking for a fun vehicle and wants to experience a Camper for having years of wonderful camping trips. This camper has just a little more than 118,000 miles.

Because of the relatively low mileage (less than 4,000 miles per year over the thirty years) and regular maintenance, there are minimal mechanical issues.  It has been thoroughly gone through and all mechanical issues have been repaired.  The Vanagon camping models are becoming increasingly scarce and one in this level of mechanical condition is even harder to find. Make it yours and have a great time camping anywhere in the World.

Check out all the pictures included in the listing.  There are some small amounts of rust and some minor dents in the body, but for a 30 year old vehicle, it is in good condition.

VW going turbo-only in 3 to 4 years

Wed, 18 Sep 2013

This really was a matter of when, rather than if. Volkswagen will apparently be the first manufacturer to phase out naturally aspirated engines in favor of turbocharging its full slate. VW is kind of responsible for ushering in this push towards small-displacement, turbocharged engines that's taken the industry by storm. When it dropped its direct-injection, 2.0-liter turbo in the 2005 GTI it demonstrated that strapping an iron long to an engine can enhance the powertrain as a whole. VW made fuel economy gains, while also giving a linear, non-laggy turbo experience that it has replicated, model-after-model, to this day.
Speaking with The Detroit News, Volkswagen's executive Vice President of Group Quality, Marc Trahan, told the paper that, "We only have one normally aspirated gas engine, and when we go to the next generation vehicle that it's in, it will be replaced. So three, four years maximum."
Really, it's hard to get teary-eyed about either of these engines going away. VW has access to smaller powerplants that could easily match the performance of the 2.5 five-cylinder and the 3.6 V6, while gobbling up less fuel and providing a better driving experience. What we are sad about is that a similar statement about the extinction of NA engines came from the Vice President of Powertrain Engineering at Ford, Joe Bakaj. We'd certainly get teary-eyed over a world without Ford's excellent 5.0-liter V8.

Volkswagen might cut 40 models across brands to save cash

Mon, Jun 20 2016

Volkswagen once set out to pass Toyota and General Motors and become the largest automaker in the world. Following months of fallout from the diesel emissions scandal, the manufacturer is rumored to be dropping around 40 models from its company-wide lineup. According to German business and finance publication Handelsblatt, the Volkswagen Group is looking to slim down and remove a number of low-volume vehicles from various lineups. The company currently sells around 340 models across brands that include Audi, Lamborghini, and Bentley. Volkswagen is refusing to comment, but Handelsblatt claims to have sources within the company. Last week, Volkswagen Group CEO Matthias Muller announced a new strategy for the company that includes a major focus on electric vehicles and new technology services. During his announcement, Muller said the company would be cutting a number of models, but at the time no numbers, models, or brands were discussed. Despite comments to the contrary, rumors have persisted since late last year that Volkswagen was looking to sell commercial truck and bus manufacturer MAN. Volkswagen owns truck and bus manufacturer Scania, so even if it dropped MAN, the company would still have a foothold within the bus and truck market. There is also talk of the company selling Italian motorcycle manufacturer Ducati, which Volkswagen acquired via Audi in 2012. The company's image has taken a huge hit in the wake of the diesel scandal. Volkswagen has set aside cash in order to pay fines and may be looking to sell these several subsidiaries and cut low-volume models in order offset the costs. Despite the scandal, the company led worldwide sales in the first quarter of 2016. The same was true in 2015, but sales tanked at the end of the year following the diesel revelations. Everybody's doing flying cars, so why aren't we soaring over traffic already?

Mon, Oct 1 2018

"Where's my flying car?" has been the meme for impending technology that never materializes since before there were memes. And the trough of disillusionment for vehicles that can take to sky continues to nosedive, despite a nonstop fascination with flying cars and a recent rash of announcements about the technology, particularly from traditional automakers. Earlier this month, Toyota applied for an eye-popping patent for a flying car that has wheels with spring-loaded pop-out helicopter rotors. The patent filing says the wheels/rotors would be electrically powered, while in on-land mode the vehicle would have differential steering like tracked vehicles such as tanks and bulldozers. At an airshow in July, Aston Martin unveiled its Volante Vision Concept, an autonomous hybrid-electric vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) vehicle it developed with Rolls-Royce. Aston says the Volante can fly at top speeds of around 200 mph and bills it as a luxury car for the skies. Audi used the Geneva Motor Show in March to unveil a flying car concept called the Pop.Up Next it developed with Airbus and Italdesign. If the Pop.Up Next, an electric and autonomous quadcopter/city car combo, gets stuck in traffic, an app can be used to summon an Airbus-developed drone to pick up the passenger compartment pod, leaving the chassis behind. Audi said that the Pop.Up Next is a "flexible on-demand concept that could open up mobility in the third dimension to people in cities." But Audi also acknowledged that at this point it has no plans to develop it. The cash-stoked, skies-the-limit Silicon Valley tech crowd is also bullish on flying cars. The startup Kitty Hawk that's backed by Google co-founder Larry Page announced in June that it's taking pre-orders for its single-seat electric Flyer that's powered by 10 propellers and is capable of vertical takeoffs and landings. The current version can only fly up to 20 mph and 10 feet in the air and has a flight time of just 12 to 20 minutes on a full charge. The Flyer is considered a recreational vehicle, so doesn't require a pilot's license. Uber says it plans to launch its more ambitious Elevate program and UberAIR service in 2023. "Uber customers will be able to push a button and get a flight on-demand with uberAIR in Dallas, Los Angeles and a third international market," Uber Elevate promises on its website.
