1988 Vw Vanagon Westfalia Camper on 2040-cars
Alton, Illinois, United States
1988 VW Vanagon/Westy....I bought the Westy 9/17/2011. It has been garaged since-excluding annual camping trips and cycling races spring-fall. It is my 3rd Westy and I have a plethora of knowledge of these vans and must sell to pay off mega student loan debt unfortunately......I bought the van from a wonderful elderly couple whom used the van to transport instruments that they made by hand- specifically Large Harps..The reason I'm mentioning that is because the van had stickers on it as you will see in the pics- I have removed all of them but you can still see remnants in some areas mainly the back and up where the Westy sticker should be on the front upper Pop-top and rear are both missing-However, I bought replacements as my full intent was to repaint the van. There are a few areas of surface rust which I include in the pics as well. The Vent/litte sunroof on top of Pop-top needs to be replaced as it is 26 years old and has cracks in it. The pop-top itself is in great shape and the canvas is perfect. The front screen has two tiny tears that have appeared since I have owned it-and can be easily repaired. I took it to my VW mechanic of 30 years and he looked over everything to make sure the engine was in fact rebuilt-which I took a pic of the receipt showing proof.. One bummer is the AC motor is missing-it was not an issue for me but may be for some. The previous owner also had installed a water temp gage to supplement the already existing one as they had an issue years ago-so it acts as double confidence of knowing TEMP.
The carpet is stained in the kitchenette area and according to "GO WESTY" it's not too expensive to replace- as well as the vent. All orig-curtains work well and look nice- all sliding windows work-and screens in good shape. There are a few small dings you we see in the pics as well. The Van is from Utah and spent the majority of it's life out west. I also have all the extra belts, the power cord, the extra table, the privacy curtain that buttons up front for complete privacy- this curtain has some staining on it-I have never tried to wash it as it was not a big deal to me. I will answer any questions one may have as well as send any more pics upon request. I am giving the best of my knowledge of the van-and after owning 2 previous ones I personally would not buy or sell one without knowing the owner was disclosing all information they are aware. These vans are a 'lifestyle' and need to remain respected by the WESTY Community....HaPPY Bidding..............Please feel free to contact me regarding any issue I may have neglected. |

Recharge Wrap-up: VW exec predicts EVs with 375-mile range
Wed, Oct 8 2014Volkswagen says EV ranges over 300 miles aren't too far in the future. Plug-in hybrids are merely a bridge to all-electric mobility becoming more practical for people who need to travel longer distances, according to Dr. Heinz-Jakob Neusser, Volkswagen's head of powertrain development. Energy density is increasing rapidly in new batteries. Speaking about the e-Golf, Neusser says, "I expect the next generation in 2015-17 will increase to around 300 km [186 miles] and the following step will be around 500-600 km [310-372 miles]." Neusser also says he believes that charging infrastructure will improve to catch up with these more advanced batteries. Read more at Motoring. BMW is offering higher incentives for the all-electric i3 than the range-extended version. More buyers are opting for the i3 REx, with its 78 extra miles of range. So, to move the standard i3 (which is already cheaper), BMW is offering $2,000 in incentives for October - double what is offered for the i3 REx. The added incentives help close the price gap between the BMW and other EVs with similar ranges. The deals won't last long, though. According to New Jersey BMW salesman Manny Antunes, BMW's current incentives are "as aggressive as they're going to get" for a while. Read more at Green Car Reports. Honda is changing its research and development process for all cars after a series of Fit Hybrid recalls. The hybrid version, which makes up more than half of all Fit sales in Japan, was the subject of four recalls within nine months. In response, Honda will change the way it develops cars worldwide, with one extra "gate" to pass in the process. Honda will do prototype testing earlier in the research process to see how separately developed components work together before moving onto the car's development phase. It will add time and cost to making cars, but Honda hopes it will help prevent problems - like those that come with a flurry of recalls - down the road. Read more at Automotive News. VW chair says component cost decrease keeps him confident of EV success
Tue, Mar 25 2014Volkswagen AG is in the middle of implementing a comprehensive electric vehicle strategy, one that we've been documenting for a long time. The Group stands ready to offer dozens of plug-in vehicles in the coming years if it feels there is sufficient demand and believes that selling a million EVs in Germany by 2020 is reasonable. That would be a solid number, but remember that VW sold over 5,923,000 passenger cars around the world last year, and the group as a whole sold over 9.7 million. At the company's annual Media Conference and Investor Conference in Berlin recently, the chairman of the board of VW AG - surrounded by some decidedly non-green examples of the VW Group's vehicles (some absurd new Bugatti, for example) - took some time to put the company's EV plans into focus. The upshot is that Dr. Martin Winterkorn is still guiding his electromobility ship into new waters, saying that "many more [plug-in] models will follow." Winterkorn said there are three main reasons he is confident in the ability of VW (and Audi and Porsche, at the very least) to push EV sales upward. Batteries are getting better, he said, and if the ranges can be extended, then customers are happy. But the real secret lies in reducing component costs. He said (as translated): It is important to look at the cost of the components: the battery technology, the electric motor and the electric components. Whenever you go into volume production, you of course have economies of scale. In two to three years' time, if we are able to achieve the goals we are setting for ourselves with cost and reach sufficient volume, I do believe that we can achieve two to three percent [market share] within VW Group. So, hitting a million EVs by 2020 is reachable. With the e-Golf and the e-Up off to excellent sales starts, we're willing to be confident as well.
VW admits 430,000 2016 models have implausible CO2 ratings
Mon, Nov 16 2015Volkswagen finally explained more details about its CO2 rating scandal in Europe and admitted that 430,046 of the estimated 800,000 affected vehicles with "implausible" figures came from the 2016 model year. They included some from Audi, Seat, Skoda, VW, and VW Commercial Vehicles, according to the automaker's list (as a PDF). The problem mostly impacts diesel engines, but the inventory also shows some gasoline mills. VW will next determine the accurate CO2 emissions for these vehicles, and the German Federal Vehicle and Transport Authority will supervise that process to ensure the data's veracity. The automaker will also launch websites in Europe to let owners enter their model's VIN to check whether it's affected. Because governments there often link vehicle taxes and CO2 production, the company promises to work with regulators in each country to cover any fees that result from the inaccurate figures. VW announced the CO2 scandal earlier in November and estimated the equivalent of $2.2 billion to fix it at the time. A later report claimed that a group of engineers were responsible for fabricating the emissions data. They allegedly couldn't meet reduction goals from Martin Winterkorn, and between 2013 and this spring the workers did things like overinflate the tires during testing to achieve the desired results. VW is also closer to a fix in the diesel emissions scandal. According to an anonymous insider to Bloomberg, the company has a repair for the 1.6-liter engine that's reportedly neither very complex nor expensive. German regulators would still need to approve the solution before it could roll out to owners. Next step in clarifying the CO2 issue Affected Volkswagen Group models of the current model year have been identified Customers being informed via website Discussions with the authorities have begun The Volkswagen Group reports that the vehicles of the 2016 model year affected by the CO2 issue have been identified. There is thus now clarity about the new vehicles of the current model year out in the marketplace. On 3 November 2015, the Group had already reported that irregularities may have arisen in determining the CO2 figures for type approval of around 800,000 vehicles. This was identified during its own currently ongoing investigations and had been made public. The internal investigations into the current vehicles of the 2016 model year provide results for narrowing down the actually affected vehicles with implausible CO2 figures.
