 1987 VOLKSWAGON VANAGON GL CAMPER

I have owned this VW camper since 1997.  It is the deluxe Vanagon GL model, the classic Westfalia camper.  I used to use it for camping locally many times a year.  It was used for family camping at places like KOA.  It was used instead of a tent when I was participating Boy Scout events.  Now that I am 84, I have not used it for camping for several years.  I drive it weekly to keep it maintained.  I realized that I need to sell it, but have procrastinated for some time, trying to decide whether to refurbish it to “factory fresh condition” or allow someone else to enjoy it.  This is an “as-is” sale.

                                                            CAMPER – TAILGATER - VAN

This is not only a super van to take your family camping or on a picnic, but would be a great tailgating vehicle as it gives you the full use of a kitchenette and “lounge” and only takes up one normal parking space.

Last year the motor overheated and I had it replaced with a used engine.  It necessitated replacing the exhaust gaskets.  It runs fine now, but the motor has low oil pressure after highway driving, but otherwise is fine.

CAMPING FOR (4) ADULTS

The upper and lower “mattresses” are intact and quite comfortable.  The original Westfalia kitchen equipment, including sink, refrigerator and propane stove, are well designed for camping. They have not been used for years and probably need some repair.  The canvas top over the upper bunk area is in generally good shape. Front seats swivel and have a small table between them. The rear bench seat, which converts into a double bed, also has movable table. Bench seat has seat belts for rear passengers. Pop-up section allows for full height movement inside van.

Van has 360 degree privacy curtains, in very good shape. Also included are the rear insect screen and front privacy curtains, not in pictures.

Cosmetically, the van is in great shape. The exterior has no rust spots or body cancer. Paint is original and in reasonably good condition, except for minor scratches & dings, see pictures. Most of the plastic trim is showing typical aging, shrinkage. All tires have good rubber. Original jack & lug wrench included.

If you are looking for a classic VW camper to enjoy or restore, this one would be awesome.

Audi rumored to buy Alfa Romeo, officials deny it

Thu, 28 Mar 2013

For more than two years, Volkswagen has been making public statements about its willingness to buy Alfa Romeo and quadruple the Italian brand's sales, and for just as long, Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne has replied with some version of "Mr. Piëch, drop it." According to a report in Ward's Auto, all that jousting might be over: it claims that sources close to both Marchionne and Audi CEO Rupert Stadler admit that the two are in talks for Audi to buy not just Alfa Romeo, but a production plant in Italy. In fact, a final deal could possibly include partsmaker Magnetti Marelli.
Against that backdrop, a report by German news weekly Stern quotes a Fiat spokesmen as saying it doesn't comment on rumors and an Audi rep has said flatly that "There is no substance in the news." If a sale is being arranged, the timing would seem to point to how eager Fiat is to raise cash to complete its major initiatives. Even though Alfa Romeo continues to delay its return to the US, it just showed off the production version of the 4C at the Geneva Motor Show (shown above) and said that preferred Fiat dealerships here would get them. Then there's Alfa's recently concluded deal with Mazda to develop a roadster based on the next generation MX-5 Miata - a deal that would seem to help both the Italian and Japanese brands.
The monetary issues are troublesome, though. Fiat is taking a beating in the European market and its weak-kneed balance sheet is delaying gotta-have-it products like the Jeep Cherokee. Fiat has been talking to banks about getting money to buy the rest of Chrysler and those financial institutions have also raised issues about debt and cash reserves, and the nasty game of chess Fiat is playing with the United Auto Workers (and now the court system about the portion of Chrysler it doesn't own) could end up blowing another hole in Marchionne's plans. It is possible that this could finally have convinced Fiat to at least see how serious Audi's parent company, Volkswagen, is about buying Alfa Romeo. Or it could be just another rumor.

2014 Volkswagen XL1 [w/video]

World's Most Efficient Car Impresses, Not Without Compromises
Among our many duties at the recent Geneva Motor Show, we were offered a pretty exclusive drive in the new Volkswagen XL1 hyper-efficient plug-in diesel hybrid. There is so much that is interesting about a car like this reaching production from a major automaker that it's tough to know where to begin.
First off, you should know that - at least for this generation - there is absolutely no chance in Albuquerque that this "1-liter vehicle" (i.e. a vehicle that can burn just one liter of fuel to travel 100 kilometers, or 62.1 miles) will ever make it into the hands of North American customers. We, too, were having trouble imagining an XL1 in typical American traffic, surrounded by comparatively massive pickups and SUVs. The driving experience had us recalling a couple of weeks in 1999 when we drove the then-revolutionary Honda Insight hybrid on US roads. We keenly remember the feeling of being very small and vulnerable, even as we felt proudly green in our 61-mpg Tochigi pod. Thing is, the Volkswagen is smaller still, and nearly as light despite its more complex drivetrain and safety features.

Touring the Volkswagen Museum in Wolfsburg

Mon, 23 Sep 2013

Forgive the ribbon up top - this isn't so much of a Read This as a Look At This. Ran When Parked took a tour of the sprawling Volkswagen Museum in Wolfsburg, and while there's a spot of text about the different and unique vehicles on display in the rotating exhibits, it's largely the collection of pictures of odd, one-off VW-badged cars and vans that excites. If you're a fan of the weird and wild, this is a post you'll want to look at.
As RWP points out, this is the larger, but less busy, museum targeted purely at Volkswagen products. The smaller AutoStadt museum, meanwhile, covers a much broader swath, with products from other Volkswagen Group members. Click on over to view the extensive gallery of high-quality images from Ran When Parked.
