Up for No reserve auction is my 1987 Volkswagen vanagon GL westfalia camper van with 159,000 well taken care of miles. Let me start off by saying this is a great running and driving very original camper with a clean title that is Pennsylvania state inspected / emissions inspected till april 2014, drive anywhere ! Included is its extensive service history records from 2000 on and all the original books and manuals it came with new, as well as a factory Bentley service manual!

Exterior: Original paint is decent, does show its age and has a few bumps / scratches and bruises but a good ten footer and  better than most for the age of the van (remember the paint is over 25 years old!). There is a bra on the front but not due to any front end damage or anything like that i just liked the look and helps protect the paint from road debris. It has a nice trailer hitch on the rear to accommodate a bike rack, mount a cargo basket etc. The fiberglass pop top is in great condition as well as the front cargo area. All the lights work as well as doors open and close properly. It has the factory Aluminum 14 inch wheels and NICE proper load range tires with about 11/32nds tread (more than 3/4) remaining. Underside of the van is VERY nice and rust FREE! I have not seen any indication the vans been repainted or involved in an accident or had prior collision repairs done.

Interior: Original westfalia conversion camper interior, grey in color. Shows only minor wear, no rips or tears in the upholstery, a few minor stains here and there but nice for its age. t. Front seats are in good shape and Power windows work but passengers does go up a bit slower than the drivers. Original tables are there in good shape and all doors / cabinets open and close properly .  Has an aftermarket cd player with aux. input but for some reason the drivers side speaker does not work.  All the original camper stuff is there, light above the stove works , the original refrigerator works on 12 volts as well as 110 but i have NOT tried the LP gas system for the fridge or burners but was told it worked. Sink worked fine hooked up to the water and 110 outlet works when power is hooked up. All the curtains are there in good shape and It has ALL the original screens that came with these new, The side sliding door screen, a rear hatch screen , the hanging mesh basket, l the front privacy curtain  that goes in the drivers compartment to cover the front and side windows. The top bunk mattresses are in good condition and no mold or any other funky stuff growing on the ceiling of the top. The right side rear below the bed under the factory rear air conditioner the contact paper is coming down alittle bit in the corner but i have it held up there for now (could simply glue it back up i suppose) The westy has a BRAND NEW go westy 3 screen canvas installed as well !

Engine , suspension , brakes and drive line:  The engine runs good, doesn't overheat, leak , use oil and cruises nice down the road. The automatic transmission shifts very nice and engages in gear just as it should. The suspension and steering is tight, does not pull or anything like that and wheel is strait while driving.

SERVICE HISTORY! : I have preformed mechanical services to the van since ive had it ( I am a certified auto technician )  and i have all the records of replaced parts and (major) services done to it from the previous owner. Here is  a list, dates, cost and mileages when parts and services were done:
-February 2002 :  133,831 miles. front control arm bushings. wipers. wheel alignment. replace catalytic converter pipes and gaskets. remove, Dissemble and reseal transmission. $2,656.77

-October 2004: 143,196 miles. Rear wheel cylinders . coolant expansion tank. coolant level sensor. hvac blower motor. heater core. coolant flush. swaybar bushings. fuel pressure regulator. exhaust manifold.   $1066.07

October 2004: 143,455. Remove and replace starter. $280.00

November 2004: 149,297. Radiator. Coolant fan switch. brake master cylinder. $720.31

Since ive had it (april of 2013) : like i mentioned  before I am an auto technician so upon purchasing the van i went over it and replaced everything i thought needed to be replaced to make it safe and reliable for my family and  I to drive in. (comes with receipts from parts purchased since ive had it)
Replaced the coolant. resurfaced the front brake rotors an installed a very good quality set of German brake pads. cleaned and adjusted the rear drum brakes. replaced a few burnt out exterior light bulbs. wiper blades. alternator belt. air filter. fuel filter and fuel pump. spark plugs. coolant hose junction. balanced the tires. changed the oil (still has many miles go before needing an oil change). Pennsylvania state inspection and emissions inspection till April of 2014. Just replaced the battery with a very good quality Interstate Mega tron.

Vans defects: the van is over 25 years old so it has a few things that would have to be fixed to make it perfect. the paint is original and has scratches, a few dings etc. there is one spot around the side window that has rust as well as a spot with some bodywork in the passengers lower fender behind the wheel well by the mudflap. The passengers side power window switch could be secured better in the door panel (falls out sometimes). You have to remove the radio face plate when parked to avoid the radio drawing battery current and after a period of time draining the battery (simple fix) someone wired it in wrong i think. Fuel gauge does not work, it could be the panel in the dash or the sending unit or wiring. I have not checked into it honestly besides visually checking the harness that goes down the the sending unit in the gas tank and cleaning the connector. I just set the Trip odometer and fill it up when i hit a certain mileage, never really bothered me. The air conditioning unit is there with all hoses etc. and compressor spins fine but i never put a belt on it (due to unwanted engine power draw). The right rear interior in the back where the overhead air condition unit is mounted is sagging alittle bit and contact paper starting to come off (have it taped/stapled back up). The rear hatch struts dont work to hold the hatch up but previous owner installed a piece of PVC on the outside of the right side one so when the hatch is all the way up you can lock it in place (good idea i thought). I am just trying to list this van and explain it as it is and be honest as possible in its condition but due to its age and being used it is sold AS-IS . I get many compliments/thumbs up when driving it and EVERYONE wants to talk about it when your at a campground.

J.D. Power customer survey of dealers counts Cadillac, Buick as big winners

Mon, 14 Apr 2014

Cadillac and Buick have taken the trophies in J.D. Power's latest Customer Service Index Study examining satisfaction with dealer service. Surveying more than 90,000 owners and lessees of 2009-2013 model-year cars, the study found that those with pre-paid maintenance packages were ten percent more likely to buy their next car from the same brand.
Dealer satisfaction scores have improved overall, Cadillac nabbed the luxury segment ahead of Audi and Lexus, taking the crown that Lexus held last year. Buick keeps the mass-market dealer satisfaction win in the family, finishing ahead of Volkswagen and last year's winner GMC. The study also found that service department use of tablets increased customer satisfaction, as did "best practices" like "providing helpful advice." Who knew?
You can find details on those and more findings in the press release below.

Suzuki and VW finalize their divorce

Thu, Feb 11 2016

The rocky divorce between Suzuki and Volkswagen is finally over after working its way through the International Court of Arbitration since 2011, according to the Japan Times. In the final settlement to end the companies' disputes, Suzuki agreed to pay VW an undisclosed amount for not living up to the agreement to use the German automaker's diesel engines. While they won't disclose the exact sum, Suzuki said in a statement that the money "will not have any significant impact" on its 2015 fiscal year results, which will end in March. The arbitration court took the biggest step to end this transcontinental partnership in August 2015 when the body ruled VW needed sell its 19.9-percent stake in Suzuki. However, the Japanese company wasn't entirely off the hook because VW was still allowed to sue for damages over the diesel engine issue. This latest decision finally clears up that dispute. Like most marriages, the union between VW and Suzuki began with stars in both parties' eyes. The Germans paid $2.8 billion to buy 19.9 percent of the Japanese company in December 2009. VW was supposed to get greater access to the auto market in India, and Suzuki hoped to capitalize on access to its partner's advanced technology. By 2011, rumors started percolating that things were contentious behind closed doors. VW allegedly tried to assert control over Suzuki's operations, and the Japanese company reportedly wasn't happy with its access to the German tech. Suzuki even bought diesel engines from Fiat, rather than VW. Later that year, company CEO Osamu Suzuki announced he would end the alliance, and they started working through arbitration. Notification Concerning Resolution of Arbitration by Settlement As Suzuki has reached a settlement regarding the arbitration that Suzuki filed with the International Court of Arbitration of the International Chamber of Commerce on 24 November 2011, Suzuki informs you of the following: 1. History from the Request for Arbitration to the Settlement As announced in the "Notification Concerning Arbitration Award" dated 30 August 2015, the Tribunal indicated that it would address the issue of alleged damages arising from Suzuki's breach of the agreement claimed by Volkswagen AG ("VW") in a further stage of the arbitration proceedings. Suzuki reached a settlement with VW in regard to such arbitration proceedings on 10 February 2016. Accordingly, the arbitration proceedings have been concluded. 2.

The mood at this year’s Paris Motor Show: Quiet

Tue, Oct 2 2018

The Paris Motor Show, held every other year in the early fall, typically kicks off the annual cavalcade of automotive conclaves, one that traverses the globe between autumn and spring, introducing projective, conceptual and production-ready vehicle models to the international automotive press, automotive aficionados and a public hungry for news of our increasingly futuristic mobility enterprise. But this year, at the press preview days for the show, the grounds of the Porte de Versailles convention center felt a bit more sparsely populated than usual. This was not simply a subjective sensation, or one influenced by the center's atypically dispersed assemblage of seven discrete buildings, which tends to spread out the cars and the crowds. There were not only fewer new vehicles being premiered in Paris this year, there were fewer manufacturers there to display them. Major mainstream European OEM stalwarts such as Alfa Romeo, Fiat, Nissan and Volkswagen chose to sit out Paris this year, as did boutique manufacturers like Bentley, Aston Martin and Lamborghini. This is not simply based in some antipathy on the part of the German, British and Italian manufacturers toward the French market — though for a variety of historical and societal reasons that market may be more dominated by vehicles produced domestically than others. Rather, it is part of a larger trend in the industry. Last year, Mercedes-Benz announced that it would not be participating in the flagship North American International Auto Show in 2019 — and that it might not return. Other brands including Jaguar/Land Rover, Audi, Porsche, Mazda and nearly every exotic carmaker have also departed the Detroit show. Some of these brands will still appear in the city in which the show is taking place, and host an event offsite, to capitalize on the presence of a large number of reporters in attendance. And even brands that do have a presence at the show have shifted their vehicle introductions to the days before the official press opening in an attempt to stand out from the crowd. In many ways, this makes sense. With an expanding number of automakers, with diversification and niche-ification of models and with wholesale shifts that necessitate the introduction of EV or autonomous sub-brands, there is a growing sense that, with everyone shouting at the same time, no one can be heard.
