Possibly the best-looking Volkswagen Westfalia ever! This is the Holy Grail of Volkswagen Campers. Seats 4 and sleeps 4 with the full factory Wesfalia camper pop-top package.

This Vanagon Westfalia is stunning. The 1986-1991 are the most refined and sought after years with many upgrades over previous models. This vehicle has POWER steering, POWER brakes, AUTOMATIC transmission, front DISC brakes, AIR-CONDITIONING and that is only the start.

The heart of this vehicle is in the engine conversion. The lackluster Waterboxer motor was replaced with a brand new inline Audi/VW 4 cylinder conversion. The conversion is a beautiful piece of workmanship using all of the components used for a South African factory conversion with a modern Audi/VW motor. It is artistically installed with all new engine components across the board including liquid filled motor mounts, hoses, belts etc. It drives wonderfully without any vibration or odd side effects. The conversion provides these benefits; more durability, easy and inexpensive maintenance, higher RPMs, higher speeds, higher torque, more horsepower, better gas mileage, faster acceleration, better climbing, smoother ride. All the things we wished our utilitarian Volkswagens could do better (see comparison below). A new automatic transmission was installed at that time of conversion and each have under 2000 miles on them.

Compare the Inline 4 with the boxer motor below:

TECHNICAL DATA:

Audi/VW 2.0 Liter inline 4
Horsepower 140 @ 4800 RPM

Torque
138 ft/lb. @ 3500 RPM
133 ft/lb. @ 4800 RPM

Redline 6300 RPM

Fuel economy 21 - 23 mpg

Waterboxer 2.1L
Horsepower 90 @ 4800 RPM
(1.9 liter: 82 @ 4800RPM)

Torque
117 ft/lb. @ 3200 RPM
96 ft/lb. @ 5200 rpm

Redline 5200 RPM

Fuel economy 17-19 mpg

All of that make a great difference in drive-ability, durability and enjoyment.

There are many new parts and upgrades galore. There is a new premium 3 window heavy duty canvas top. The front screen zips open as well for easy access to the cab top storage rather than climbing up on the outside. Extra windows and extra thick canvas help keep it quiet, insulated or provide better ventilation and views.

There is a MICROWAVE. Great for today's food choices along with the traditional two burner stove top and propane tank. There is the sink and water tank of course with the 3 piece connections outside including power. The refrigerator was replaced with a brand new modern 40 quart version that you can plug in to 110V and load inside the house then plug into the vehicle for travel and camping. It sits down or upright with shelves inside. The microwave and lower cabinet can be removed and the new refrigerator fits perfectly in the original fridge location as well. Personally, loading it in the house and getting it cool the night before and having the flexibility to move it around is much better than lugging all the food to a hot or cold car.

The suspension was replaced with a Volkswagen Syncro suspension for more clearance and a silky solid ride over bumps. PLEASE NOTE this is NOT A 4WD SYNCRO. It does everything a Syncro does except gets better gas mileage, has less maintenance and won't climb steep muddy, rocky roads with the Jeeps, which I wouldn't want to do in my Westy anyway. It doesn't lack any traction in all climates. The Syncro/4wd decals will peel right off if desired.

It has the larger alloy wheels to  replace  the stock steel wheel with the proper extra load Michelin tires.

This Vanagon is painted in it's original brown that is in great shape, but I didn't find the color very appealing so it is covered in a professional custom-designed vehicle wrap that should last up to 10 years. At glance it looks to be just off-white, but at closer inspection it has a subtle grey German graphic pattern coming from the bottom that fades to white. It's a great one-of-kind look and a fun conversation piece.

It has a fantastic 6 speaker stereo, with two booming amped sub-woofers run by a quality high-powered Sony CD stereo with auxiliary input.

It has a new wall-to-wall upgrade carpet kit up front which covers much more area and wall than the stock carpet. It also come with a removable high-quality fitted mat for the front and back. It also has a super bright and great-looking 4 light South African grill. It comes with the factory sunroof as well.

It has new interior door and side panels are installed. Adhesive sound and vibration insulation was installed on all the metal panels at that time to give a quieter ride, less vibration and a more immune to outside temperatures. The doors now have a solid thud rather than the clank from before.

It is completely rust free and ready to travel. There are many more custom touches and upgrades such as VW cup holders, dual swivel seats, rear compartment heater, washable zippered mattress covers, door bug screens, tons of cabinetry, power-inverter, plenty of storage space and a full rock chip rocker panel treatment.

These are getting rare and harder to find each day in this kind of condition. This is an investment that will bring tons of fun, adventure and future dividends. See GoWesty on the web for comparable values. FREE SHIPPING to CALIFORNIA at BUY it NOW price (I'll need a ride to the airport). The refrigerator ONLY comes at the BUY it NOW price. The European plate is NOT included.

Feel free to ask questions within eBay or call or text Ronn at 801-787-7474

Please note: Some of the claims about the details of the vehicle are obvious and easily visible upon vehicle inspection. I purchased the vehicle from the family of a man who had deceased and provided the details without much paperwork to substantiate. Most things are clearly visible however, but please do your own inspection as any error on my part is accidental without warranty or guarantee of its accuracy. The vehicle "as is, where is" regardless of claims made above.

Foreign automakers pay from $38 to $65 per hour to non-union workers

Sun, Mar 29 2015

As leaders for the United Auto Workers gather in Detroit for their Special Convention on Collective Bargaining to work out the negotiating stance for this year's new labor agreements with the Detroit 3 automakers, what they most want to do is figure out how to eliminate the two-tier wage scale. However, the lower Tier 2 wage has allowed the domestic automakers to reduce their labor costs, hire more workers, and compete better with their import competition. As it stands, per-hour labor rates including benefits are $58 at General Motors, $57 at Ford, and $48 at Fiat-Chrysler – a reflection of FCA's much greater number of Tier 2 workers. The Center for Automotive Research released a study of labor rates (including benefits) that put numbers to what the imports pay: Mercedes-Benz pays the most, at an average of $65 per hour, Volkswagen pays the least, at $38 per hour, and BMW is just a hair above that at $39 per hour. Among the Detroit competitors, Honda workers earn an average of $49 per hour, at Toyota it's $48 per hour, Nissan is $42 per hour, and Hyundai-Kia pays $41 per hour. The lower import wages are aided by their greater use of temporary workers compared to the domestics. Automotive News says the ten-dollar gap between those foreign camakers and the domestics turns out to about an extra $250 per car in labor, which adds up quickly when you're pumping out many millions of cars. That $250-per-car number is one that, come negotiating time, the Detroit 3 will want to reduce, as the UAW is trying to raise both Tier 1 and Tier 2 wages. Another wrinkle is that the domestic carmakers are considering the wide adoption of a third wage level lower than Tier 2. Some workers who do minor tasks like assembling parts trays kits and battery packs already make less than Tier 2, but the UAW will be quite wary about cementing yet another wage scale at the bottom of the system while it's trying to fight a bigger battle at the top. 2015 VW e-Golf coming to ZEV states for $35,445* this November

Mon, Aug 25 2014

Is $6,465 too much to get someone thinking about buying a Nissan Leaf to opt for the Volkswagen e-Golf instead? That's the price difference between the current EV sales champion, which now starts at $28,980, and the just-announced price for the e-Golf, which will sell for $35,445 in the US when it arrives in about ten states (basically, the ZEV states that follow California's lead in zero-emission vehicle rules) this November and will qualify for the federal tax credit of up to $7,500. VW says that the extra money will get you "the most versatile electric vehicle in its class." There is only one trim line, the SEL Premium, which will be the first VW in the US with all-LED headlights. The car's powertrain numbers pretty much match the Nissan Leaf, though. The e-Golf has a 24.2-kWh lithium-ion battery (the Leaf has a 24-kWh pack) and a 115-hp, 199-pound foot electric motor (107 hp,187 lb-ft in the Leaf). The e-Golf's official EPA numbers are not yet available, but VW says it will have an "average range between 70 and 90 miles." The Leaf has an official EPA range of 84 miles. The e-Golf has a better onboard charger – 7.2 kW vs. 3.6 or 6.6, depending on your Leaf's options – and has SAE Combo fast charging capability as standard. VW is also working with 3Degrees to offset all of the emissions "created from production, distribution and charging of the e-Golf for up to approximately 36,000 miles of driving." VW also announced prices for its lightly facelifted 2015 Jetta today. The base model, the 2.0-liter S with a manual transmission, starts at $17,325 while the top-of-the-line model, the Hybrid SEL Premium, will set you back at least $31,670. The lowest-cost TDI is the S manual, which starts at $21,640 and features VW's new 2.0-liter diesel four. A new limited-edition 1.8 Sport model with a firmer suspension, tinted taillamps and rear spoiler starts at $20,895. All VW prices listed exclude VW's *$820 destination charge and you can find all the details on trim lines in the press releases below.

Bentley considering diesel engine for new SUV

Wed, 05 Mar 2014

Turns out, in case you didn't know, the rich are just like regular people. They too are concerned about the environment, even when tooling around town in their super-luxurious Bentleys. So the automaker is weighing the idea of offering a diesel engine in its SUV offering, which could help satisfy customers' demands for more fuel-efficient engines.
Chairman and CEO Wolfgang Schreiber told Autoblog in a roundtable interview at the Geneva Auto Show that the automaker is researching whether or not a diesel engine makes sense for the brand. Bentley, owned by the Volkswagen Group, could in theory use a diesel engine from anywhere in the Volkswagen Group family. We at Autoblog have hopes they'll revive the V10 TDI used in the VW Touareg until 2010, but ever-stricter emissions laws would likely make that problematic.
But rich people aren't so much like us that they'll be worried about petty things like pricing. Schreiber admitted the diesel engine could be a $15,000 option, which he said customers would probably find "acceptable." Given that the cheapest Bentley today starts at $177,000, typical customers probably won't be diddling around worrying about an extra 15 grand.
